Australian journalist and documentary filmmaker Kevin Sanders, best known as “the first voice on CNN,’ has died aged 87.
Sanders began his career as co-anchor at Nine News, where he worked alongside Sir Eric Pearce. He went on as anchor at KTLA, Los Angeles and later became science reporter at CNN.
Sanders was a visionary journalist who dedicated his career to promoting global peace, passionate about raising awareness of the risks posed by nuclear weapons and worked tirelessly toward their abolition.
He wrote, produced, directed and was reporter in the documentaries he made to elevate consciousness regarding the current legality of nuclear weapons leading to nuclear war: People Against the Bomb – Showdown at the UN & Judgement in The Hague.
As United Nation NGO and chairman of The Earth Society he also hosted the first-ever live webcast from The United Nations at the annual equinox Earth Day Peace Bell Ceremony.

I remember him well, particularly the Apollo 11 marathon with Sir Eric Pearce which TCN9 took when Sydney’s studio ran out of steam. It went for hours and hours and hours. Not surprised he went on to reporting science. There is a classic clip somewhere of his news review program where his newspapers had all been mixed up by some studio clown.
I only knew him as a young man….he went on to live his life well.
