Seven’s Cup runneth over

With 2.7m viewers The Melbourne Cup was the race that topped the nation. But Week 45 was always going to be a one-horse race, easily won by Seven.

Week 45 was always going to go be a one-horse race.

With the broadcast of the race that stops the nation, the Seven Network already had the week stitched up.

The Melbourne Cup was the #1 show of the week on 2.7million viewers -and that’s without including people watching in office, bars and schools. Screened outside of primetime, technically it didn’t factor into the weekly share. But it did drive audiences into Seven’s primetime schedule, and a huge whack of them stayed for “that” death on Packed to the Rafters.

Seven almost swept the entire Top 10 shows for the week, winning by a comfortable margin.

  1. On a postive notice once again Channel 7 delivered a great Spring Carnival coverage. They really have it down pat. I am huge horse race lover, and i can understand people saying it is not horse racing related enough (eg. lots of fluffy stuff with fashion and stars etc) but i totally disagree the Spring Carnival is the time of year were Racing is more than purely the actually action on the track. Its a combination of fashion, partying, horse racing and fun. The mastercaster Bruce was simply great again. I think this is the best sporting coverage any network do anytime during the year. Would be nice if they upgraded the graphics though, they have used those dated ones for about 4 years now!

  2. @Craig, I like ONE and if Ten are happy for ONE to fail on the back of old sports shows that 3 men and a dog watch then so be it. I just think they would be better off running a decent movie or two rather than old baseball games just to shake it up.

I can’t wait for Packer to get in there.

  3. The problem with TEN at the moment is they have basically 2 extra digital channels against them. ONE works when the right sport is on but it doesn’t work all the time. Once Eleven comes in January i think it will improve but in saying this to come 4th on so many nights of the week is shameful for the network. It happens every single year. They have no anchor at the end of the year. Maybe they could move Loser to the end of the year instead of cramming all their good shows into the first 6 months.

  4. @steven guy – TEN is not going to add other programing to its sports channel. The ratings are an issue but it’s hard to have good numbers even for the F1 when this weeks round the race is at 2am. ch11 should help TENs over all number, just a pity it’s not starting in 4 days on Nov 11!

  5. It feels strange across the board. The corporate moves at Ten will be undermining their management team and erode their confidence. I feel sorry for them. Is this the first week Neighbours failed to make the top 100 cut? Nine losing key demos is very bad news for them. David Gyngell needs to take control and set some clear strategies for 2011. And Seven are very lucky Rafters continues to deliver, but you need complementary shows on the sked to build on it.

  6. Jerome, the percentage shares were not divided between fourteen channels in 2008…only five! I’m no mathematician , but common sense tells me that with one entertainment channel and one niche sports’ channel, Ten’s share is going to drop when ABC has four channels and Seven and Nine have three entertainment channels each. The television landscape has changed significantly since 2008.

  7. Ten have more shows than Nine in the top 20 and yet they do so badly. They have some great shows and if the new shows can rate they should do well next year. Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-O, The Defenders will all be on Ten and are all brilliant.

City Homicide is the 2nd highest rating Australian drama on tv behind the Packed To The Rafters. How can they even think about axing it? Please keep it Seven.

  8. oh dear ten. 18.2% is horrible. could this be their worst steak ever?
its definately worse than that bad streak they had at the end of 2008 they were never getting 18.2%s
