Actress Miranda Tapsell has acknowledged writers on Love Child for creating a role which is not merely driven by her being an Indigenous performer.

Speaking to Charlie Pickering on The Weekly last night she said, “I have to say it is rare to be playing a role where my race isn’t attached to it.

“What’s really been great is that they’ve been writing really, really wonderful roles for Indigenous people,” she said.

Her comments follow her lauded speech at the Logie Awards in which she called for more diversity on Australian television.

“But Charlie I just want to say too, that my speech was meant to be inclusive. I really want to see more of Australia reflected on TV. I’m talking about lot of different ethnicities being represented. I’m even talking about other minority groups…. whether it’s about people’s abilities, or where someone who’s in a minority. I feel like we should see more on TV because that’s real life and that’s what everyone sees when they walk down the street in Australia.

Pickering also asked her about her Logie reference to “the real Team Australia.”

“I’ve always felt that even though I’m Aboriginal and I feel a part of this country, there is something about the flag, and some of the Australian pride that comes along with that, that doesn’t include someone like me. And I want to be included,” she said.

“I want to be a part of Australia.”
