Rumour: Big Brother on Nine?

Update: BBBA has now retreated from its rumour. No doubt fans will be back to speculate another day….

Fansite Behind Big Brother Australia is speculating that the Nine Network could make an announcement shortly confirming it has picked up the reality series.

“The news, which is expected to be announced officially at 10am tomorrow morning local time, would signal a new era for the show in Australia,” it says. “The news is expected to be leaked in the next few hours to major news sources.”

The site, which has a long history of BB leaks, was also one which announced the series’ demise on TEN.

Nine is on record as saying it was interested in looking at the format. Big Brother was a very good show at its height and it is useful for the economic benefit it brings,” David Gyngell said.

“TEN paid a lot of money for it and they needed to get as much value as they possibly could so they ran a lot of hours,” he said.

Next year networks will be allowed to launch an extra channel, meaning they will also require sufficient content. BB could serve well as a programme with long hours if its Daily or Up Late shows aired on secondary channels, as happens in other territories. Nine could feasibly play the Eviction show on its main channel.

Southern Star is also being reviewed by Fairfax Media and with BB an ongoing brand it would certainly land them a better price.
