Jay Laga’aia is narrating a new puppet-animated children’s series for Channel Seven, Larry the Lawnmower.
Currently in production with Ambience Entertainment (Erky Perky, Go Go Stop) there are over 65 half-hour episodes of this story of Larry, who hangs out with garden tool buddies including a wheelbarrow, a spade, a rake and a “green nervous garden hose.”
“It’s been really rewarding developing such accessible characters,” said executive producer Michael Boughen. “When you can create a show for children that explores such strong community values it is quite refreshing.”
Seven’s head of production Janeen Faithfull said it would hit the screens “very soon.”
Based on an original concept from Tim Faircloth, the show is understood to be unrelated to the Larry the Lawnmower children’s book written by Jeanne Archambault and illustrated by Victoria Corey.

I was appalled by the blatant gender stereotyping in Larry the Lawnmower. Haven’t we already been there and done that with Thomas and his engines pulling the ‘female’ carriages? Why does the hero have to be male (Bob the builder, Thomas the Tank Engine’ etc)? Why does the male hero have to ‘save’ the female spade in one episode? Why does the rake have to be pink? Why does the female, pink rake have to be a fussy and cautious character?
These scenarios are so heavily laden with old-fashioned stereotypes I was extremely surprised to see them in a 21st century kids’ production. I know its ‘just’ for kids, but they do have brains! Very impressionable brains. Until I see Laura the Lawnmower save Rusty the ridiculous rake, I will be switching over in favour of more creative programming.
I have asked all the shops and no one seems to have any DVD’s yet.
My 2y/o son is also a ‘Larry the Lawnmower’ nut and we really need to get our hands on a DVD.
Can anyone out there please, please, please let me know when DVD’s are coming out, or any other Larry stuff ????
I must say DVDs are not covered on this blog, but I will pass on the frequent requests to Seven.

Thank you so much for making a childrens show that teaches them values. My 6 month old loves it and has done since he was about 3 months…. He hears the 1, 2, 3 and starts jumping up and down with excitement. Is there a DVD? I would love to have these for him as he gets older. There is so much information for them to learn in each episode……again… thank you.
