Nine’s summer of Gossip

Gossip Girl finally gets a Free to Air screening, along with Survivor: Gabon, ER, Pushing Daisies, Fringe, McLeod's Daughters and Temptation.

Gossip Girl, Pushing Daisies, Survivor: Gabon, Temptation, Fringe, ER, McLeod’s Daughters -are all coming to Channel Nine over summer.

Gossip Girl, the teen soap set in affluent Manhattan high school circles, has been screening on FOX8 (Pay TV has season two from December) but finally gets a Free to Air screening. Nine, which on-sold the rights to FOX8, will start with Series One. It is the second time the network on-sold a series by writer / producer Josh Schwartz, after it let TEN take The OC.

Also on Nine over summer is the long overdue premiere of Pushing Daisies. The quirky, colourful tale about a pie maker with the ability to revive the dead (or to end their life) with a touch of his finger was due to screen during the ratings season, but it didn’t eventuate. The series launched to much acclaim in the US before the writer’s strike, but now appears close to ending. It is created by Bryan Fuller (Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me) and produced by film producer Barry Sonnenfeld.

Survivor fans will get the Gabon series, which recently started in the US. It is expected to air at the end of Survivor: Micronesia.

ER is finally back with series 14, it’s penultimate season.

Other shows taken off air also return: McLeod’s Daughters, Fringe, Battlefronts, The Closer and the last (ever?) batch of Temptation episodes. Big Bang Theory returns from next week.

Another medical factual series The Waiting Room will premiere. Deadly Surf and Australian Geographic return.

But there is still more Two and a Half Men along with CSI, Cold Case, Australia’s Funniest Home Videos.

As always Nine’s summer programming is underpinned by its cricket coverage.

What do you think? A few treats to lure you to the box?

  1. The non ratings period is no guarantee of a long run over summer, I’m still pissed at 10 with Psych last year.

Moonlight was stopped with 8 eps to air. They only made 16 in the US with the strike.

  2. An awesome summer line-up from Nine. I’ve been waiting for Gossip Girl and Pushing Daisies for so long, not to mention Temptation. I hope that is this last batch of eps isn’t the last ever!

But I wonder where they’ll put Temptation if they’re still airing Two and a Half Men over summer?

  3. Why is it that shows like ER get shafted to summer, while they program rubbish like 20 to 1 during the year??? At least it’s back on, but yes Bruce – they did leave it halfway through series 13 (had to download the rest – I couldn’t have waited this long!!!)

  4. Thank god for that.
Now those who do not have pay tv will be able to watch gossip girl legally.

Hopefully nine keeps it on….they should as it’s “non ratings”

  5. I thought 9 stopped ER halfway through season 13 or did I miss them showing them rest ? From memory it was a mid season cliff hanger with Luka on the roof with Forest Whitaker’s character…

  6. FInally, Pushing Daisies is going to air! I’ve been desperately waiting to see this after Nine realeased the CD with the first episode teaser! It was a great episode and left me waiting more!

Also doing a happy dance on the news that Fringe will be making a come back in Summer. I know they said it would when it first went off air but, well, who trusts anything these TV scheduling execs say anymore!

It’s a shame funniest home videos hasn’t disappeared yet, or at least moved out of prime dinner time slot (who wants to see the kids eat or doing something gross just as you put a slice of pizza in your mouth)!

  7. Jake is annoying (like most teenagers!) but in a funny way. In the beginning he was just cute but now he’s lol funny. One of the best kid actors around IMO he has such a dry way of delivering his lines that is hilarious.

  8. Nine missed the boat with Gossip Girl, now one season behind, I hope it rates but I bet come Feb 09 it’s gone leaving viewers hanging mid S1, at least this might mean the DVD will be coming soon?

I’m waiting on Fringe to come back, but they only have a hand full of unaired eps to show since ep 9 look like the last before the US break. Better than nothing I guess.

Can Santa grant my wish and kill off 2.5 Men over the summer, start with the kid who is not funny anymore, just annoying!

  9. Meh Gossip Girl is a great teen series but I bought the DVD from the US and I watched the first half of the Season on fox 8 and the second part (after the strike) via downloads.

Season 2 I have all the eps on my PC but yet to find time to start watching them.

I am looking forward to Pushing Daises and hopefully ER gets a decent slot e.g 8.30.

  10. Here I thought we would avoid the plague that is 2.5 Men over summer. It might be good in the long run though, keep flogging it Nine because it will eventually die.

  11. This is an example of how rights to TV shows should work – Nine have delayed showing Gossip Girl for a couple of years, which they are entitled to do, but for those who wanted to watch the show earlier (soon after it aired in the US), you have FOX8. So many shows have been completely ruined for me because only FTA networks have been able to show them.

  12. I’m already up to episode 7 of Survivor Gabon and it’s an excellent season thus far. I couldn’t wait for nine to screen it as you never seem to know when they will, like with Micronesia. I’ve had it with the programmers with the networks, so I’ve decided to program my own schedules.

  13. Great news about survivor. Gabon is the first shot in HD too isn’t it?
And a lot of people have already seen Gossip Girl season one! I hope it gets good ratings though so they can fast-track a season 3 in the ratings periods, and save everyone a lot of hassle.

  14. As usual Nine has the best summer line up though I couldn’t care about Gossip Girl. Looking forward to finally watching Fringe which I missed thanks to it’s time slot & the long overdue return of the excellent The Closer.

And of course repeats of 2.5 Men and CSI are always welcome.
