A Current Advertisement

Bow bow. ACA tries to pass off an entire Nine Network promotion as a stand-alone story.

leila-mckinnonHonestly.

Is there no low networks won’t stoop to in the push to plug their new shows?

A Current Affair tonight promised “an exclusive preview” of Underbelly.

It was an ad.

All ACA did was replay the promo that has already been screened by Nine.

No editorial, no narration, no interview. It wasn’t even an ‘exclusive’, Leila, we’d seen it all before.

Which journalists and researchers produced this ‘story’? Zip.

To make matters worse, another Underbelly ad then ran during the following commercial break.

It’s bad enough that our 6:30 shows get into promotions for their own network. But how does running an entire advertisement  possibly pass for current affairs? It was disappointing given the show started well by covering the biggest news story of the day, a tragedy in Melbourne.

Lift. Your. Game.

  1. ACA and TT are watched due to lack of options at 6.30. No doubt most of their viewers hate the shows but leave them on as there is nothing else to watch. Even on Foxtel its a bad time slot.

And about self promos – alot of hype about the show usually means “be ready for a let down”. I suggest, for example, that Ladette to Lady (honestly, who’s going to watch that) being heavily advertised everywhere and placed after Underbelly in programming hoping for lead in is becasue 9 know it’s not the best show, won’t do well and they have to force it onto everyone to give it any hope.

Seriously, majority of Underbelly viewers will be diving for the remote come 9.37pm Mondays when the show finishes, and even if 9 make L2L start immediately after UB (like they all try to do to minimise channel changing) those who cannot get to the remote fast enough will be promptly tuning out within a few minutes in any case.

And another thought: About ratings, if a show finished at 9.37, and the next one was advertised for 9.30, do the ratings for those 7 minutes of overtime count for the 9.30 show? If so, that explains the lateness of shows from 7.30 – 10.30 every night.

  2. Expecting ACA and TT to pick up their games is like expecting Fox News in the States to become a little more even than republican leaning. I think the comments on tennis coverage is true. Its one thing to mention it but don’t get the commentators adding comments or making mention. I really don’t care if Serena loves Desperate Housewives. If you must mention it then just do it and don’t go on about it.

  3. Jason – good call, totally agree the regulatory body needs to step in. How do the news bosses get away with this, then the same day quote in the paper how their network has the superior news service?

No wonder ABC News ratings have been steadily rising – Nine and Seven cater for the lowest common denominator – throughout their news services. Although all our networks cover a big story (such as the bridge death) well, on a general day, commercial news is ridden with strange orders of prioriry, lack of interest in serious international affairs and journalism cliches.

Why not treat your viewers with an assumption of intelligence and draw the line at network advertisments?

  4. How is a promo for a M rated program allowed to run in a A Current Affair which is supposed to be in a G rated timeslot? I couldn’t believe they were showng those scenes of violence and sex at 6.30pm when I saw it on the screen at the gym last night. And then at the end of ACA, she had to apologise for having to ‘hold over’ a promoted story on a cult because they ‘ran out of time’. Well, if they weren’t wasting time showing a cross-promotion, then maybe…

  5. C’mon. Is anyone really surprised.

I don’t think anyone really thinks of ACA / TT as current affairs shows anymore. (Despite the formers title)

They are entertainment shows. Or magazine shows

  6. What about Seven News Sydney on Wednesday night including a “story” about a Home and Away cast appearance between major stories. Ian Ross your credibility plummeted.

  7. I think your survey on these current affairs shows expressed the views of the majority. I am surprised there are still people watching this drivel – I’m not

  8. have to give it to Nine, though, starting the show with the tragedy in Melbourne earlier today, and having a interview with a reporter and also another reporter on the ground besdie the waterway relaying what actually occured.

  9. Its why i never watched these 2 shows. The tennis promos on prime are even more pathetic than seven itself. Seven had an ad on the other day saying desperate housewives next monday but yesterday on prime the ad still said after the tennis. I thought why. It starts next week but you cant tell us its on monday.

Plus just a minute ago on prime they had that wolf blast ad for honourary Aussie but it was the one from 3 days ago. Seriously this is crazy. Back to aca acma should stand in because it shouldnt happen. It is suppose to be news and current affairs not promos for programs. Its like when sevens tt does those housewives things. But then there is today and sunrise as well. They are the same. They seem to advertise all the time for seven shows but they are more of talk shows so its not that bad

  10. There’s a very simple solution to this kind of crap – ACMA (or whoever is in charge) needs to step in an reclassify ACA and TT – currently they are described as news content and are therefore exempt from classification in the 6.30pm timeslot (which would otherwise require a G rating) – we all know that neither show could be described as containing news content – so lets require them to conform to the G rating and see if the situation improves!

  11. I really hate the seven promos they have during the tennis. I do not need to be reminded every 2 seconds that seven have nothing but tennis on and everything will return “After The Tennis”!!!!

It makes it worse when the commentators then try to tell us how big a fan they are of the respective shows. The best one was when Tracey Austin decided to tell me how excited she was that Mel and Kochie were going to be cooking breakfast at Fed square on Australia day. I dont think anyone cared, let alone got excited.

At least nine seem to limit there internal promos a little during the cricket, but still they are annoying. Its sad when legends of the game decide to tell me how great “Wipeout” is going to be. That’s what you told me about Monster House last year!!!

While I’m on a role did anyone see the “Underbelly” promos during the Twenty20 games? So some very obvious references to drugs, sex and violnece at the family friendly time of 7.30! And if you missed it they replayed it during the innigs break. Not good for the kiddies.

  12. 9 is really whoring Underbelly. They need it’s already known success. Sounds like 7 is doing the same with it’s sports people.

I’m already bored of the impending “We are so cool, we are so gritty, we are so awesome, we have a hit show, we have a hit show everyone is watching”

  13. That’s even worse than trying to pass off a promo for tomorrow’s show as a story of its own.

This reminds me, has anyone seen those promo’s for Seven shows during the Tennis? Somehow I don’t believe the older gentleman in the commentator’s chair (sorry, not a big fan of tennis so I don’t know his name) when he tells me about the ‘great storylines’ in Desperate Housewives.
