The clock ticked down, the countdown on a vault hit one and TEN’s new 24 hour sports channel officially hit the airwaves.

It opened with a half hour promo featuring sports personalities teased with some of the sports that will be forthcoming on ONE in high definition: AFL, swimming, cricket, motor racing, golf, netball, poker, extreme sports, Commonwealth Games, Super Bowl, Sports Tonight a new panel show Thursday Night Live and more.

It followed with the AFL Richmond v Carlton match in Melbourne, to follow in Adelaide and Perth. SKINS Swimming will follow in Sydney and Brisbane.

  1. being a sydney-sider im not into afl, more union and nrl, unfortunately One only carries 1 of the 3 codes of football in this country, but if one does become a successful channel then we may see them buy the rights to the 2 codes when they become availible.

I think some of the non-mainstream sports will be such as paintball, bmx, and athletics.

  2. Like Jackson, sport isn’t my cup of tea, but kudos to Ten for embracing multichannelling and realising that niche programming is what will make it a success.

Although committing both their HD and their secondary SD channel to it was not probably the best choice. They should have kept TenHD as it was and put sport on the secondary SD channel IMHO.

  3. As long as One has ads for One and not Ten, I can see this channel doing well. It is great to see a FTA channel actually getting their act together.

  4. “Why has ONE SD gone back to ‘Coming soon’ rather than just showing the footy?”

I’m beginning to ask that same question myself. I mean, how irrational was the decision to “simulcast” ONE in SD (Channel 12) in the first place? If they knew there was going to be problems with getting the right to air certain matches live on “ONE-SD”, then maybe Ten should’ve done the most logical thing here and made ONE an HD only channel and used their second SD channel to offer, say, an MTV-style Video Hits Channel – something which I know they would be very good at given the fact that Ten still attracts a lot more of the younger adult viewers in prime-time especially. I must admit, I was pretty shocked when I came back home just now and found only the half-hour intro but not the AFL match that was supposed to have followed. I (and I’m sure many other SD-only set-top viewers) am still pretty angry that this latest debacle has happened (but then, blame the previous Federal Government over the “anti-siphoning” issue).

  5. I’m confused 🙁

Can someone explain to me why…..I just checked the tv guide and on Sunday afternoon channel 10 are showing the Australian Formula One Grand Prix on Ten and One HD at the same time.

Why cant they just show it on One HD for all the sports junkies and just show new movies on the normal Ten channel.

Why does digital TV in this country has to be so confusing.

Well since 7, 9 and 10 are refusing to show hardly any new movies and still think that the viewers are stupid and can figure out what they are doing, free to air TV has become a complete joke in the country.

  6. One HD has some of the ugliest, disgusting looking SD overlays I have ever seen.

I don’t know what method they’re using to upscale but the aliasing and bobbing up and down is ridiculous.

Sunrise have the SD-overlays-on-HD-footage as well, but I’ve never seen anything look that atrocious. It hurts whenever they display the swimmers names on screen.

  7. It’s a great initiative, but unfortunately they won’t be showing a single sport I’m interested in, so it’s not very useful to me personally until that changes.

  8. As an AFL supporter in Sydney I was really looking forward to the launch of ONE HD.

Then they show swimming in Sydney instead of the biggest home and away match in history. What’s the point.

Thank God I can stream 3AW.

  9. Seriously people, sport drives pay TV and dominates ratings. $800m wasnt paid to the AFL for the fun of it. The content here isnt as strong as Fox but it will be more popular than 3rd rate US drama. I say good move by 10.

  10. David are you sure all those sports will be in HD? Will they send HD OB vans to sports with limited appeal such as netball? (Not intending to be sexist here)

  11. …god people are quick to judge. If you don’t like sport, watch something else! Simple!

Ten have taken the opportunity and run with it, unlike the other commercial networks, and I personally am glad they did. I love my sport, and will watch it whenever I can, so this channel is a godsend to me. To others, the others who want to watch what used to be on TenHD, I’m sure you’ll see TenHD return in the future when multiple HD channels are available and allowed…and when CanWest can afford it.

Its just a pity my TV can’t get it, because I’m one of the majority, one of the regional viewers…and the SCTen loop just isnt the same. Not the 1000th time around, anyway.

  12. Just because sport may not be your cup of tea it does not mean it is an exercise in mediocrity. It is nothing of the sort. and this is coming from a person who never watches sport.
