Hey Hey it’s Tuesday

After ten years off air, Hey Hey will return to Australian television for two live reunion shows but not on the night which made it famous.

heyhey1Hey Hey its Saturday is coming back to television.

TV Tonight can reveal Nine will bring the variety back for two live shows, on a Tuesday night, away from its traditional Saturday night.

The move is designed to undermine strong programming by rival networks. The show is being trialled to see how well it is performs, with a view to a renewed series.

It is likely to return in early October, just short of ten years off air.

Cast are being approached for the specials although more recently both Red Symons and Molly Meldrum have been regular Seven personalities.

Hey Hey’s return will follow a recent fan revival via a Facebook petition and viewer poll on the Today show. Co-creator and host Daryl Somers is known to have been eager for the show to return for some time.

Nearly two years ago when he was with Seven it was reported that the network had declined proposals to revive the show.

Last year there were also reports of exploratory talks with David Gyngell.

This week Somers told ABC Radio the show’s return is “not out of the question” and speculated that one or two reunion specials could be made in the near future.

Hey Hey its Saturday enjoyed an extraordinary 27 year run on Australian television, making household names out of such characters as Dickie Knee, Plucka Duck, its zany segments including Red Faces and cemented the status of Ossie Ostritch.

  1. Hey Hey was always good to have on in the background on a Saturday night so yeah bring it on.

But I doubt it will work in the tuesday slot… Pegged against NCIS and Rafters they might as well not bother with it.

  2. “jameso”, I call ’em like I see ’em. Nine sets itself up for criticism, and Somers – just like last time he fronted the pathetic, dying Hey Hey or during his stint gurning at the audience on Dancing With The Non-Stars – is not immune to it, regardless of how long he’s been imposing himself upon viewers.

  3. If you take a look at the non-drama series on TV at the moment, “Hey Hey It’s Saturday” does not fit in. Why? Because it is so much better! Putting it on Tuesday is a bad idea as it will be up against scripted series that are good.

Does anybody else here remember variety television? Think about it: A show that has silly contests, funny and talented guests, music, crazy segments… Variety Television was a staple genre in television for decades. There’s a reason it should exist: It’s cheap to produce and fun to watch. “Rove” is the closest you get to it now-a-days but it is still a talk-show first and foremost.

So when these specials are on, get your TiVo or PVR or whatever to record “Packed To The Rafters” or “aNother Crap Investigation Show” (NCIS)* and watch the specials live.

*And I like “NCIS”, OK !

  4. Dam,
it will be nice to see it again & i’m with Casey anything is better then the boring & past it Australia’s Funniest Home Videos is fine by me.

  5. This is tragic.

Shows that have ended, ended for a reason. It’s time to move on.

What else can we expect to see returned?

Wonder World with Catrina Rowntree, THIS Afternoon, Sunday, Business Sunday???

  6. Daryl somers is one of the most under-rated stars of Australian television. He can sing; he can play the drums (what do you call someone who hangs around with muscians? A Drummer); He can dance (host); He can smile at the camera on cue ; This guy can do it all. If this doesn’t get picked up by Channel 9 programmers, then I give up. When’s the next episode of Dance Your Ass Off on?

  7. If that one didn’t make it through the censors ……. NIce picture of a talentless has-been with no friends in show-business… and a friend.

  8. Love Hey Hey, always welcome back on my TV….. anything beats Funniest Home Videos …. that is woeful. Although I can’t understand the Tuesday thing, Hey Hey is a Saturday night institution and should always live on Saturday nights.

  9. no “neon kitten”, your always a little OTT when it comes to critising nine. The moment someone says well done to them, you get annoyed. You just think its normality going on big outrageous generalisations about them. Why dont you start looking at situations on individual basis and showing respect to those who have had great careers like Somers.

  10. michael*oz,

Yes, I say positive stuff all the time, but perhaps you’re a little over-sensitive when it comes to comments about Nine, hmm?

I never said Somers’ past career was a failure (though the last couple of years of Hey Hey were truly awful, something people mainly seem to forget).

I said that the idea of brining this show back was made of fail. And it is.

  11. thank goodness we have Packed to the Rafters, channel nine really do put a lot of crap on, no wonder their ratings are down the tube.

  12. reviivals dont usally work looks at examples like

    a country practice
    perfect match
    bullpit

if this dose go ahead i hope it works because anything is better than australias most pointless tv show

  13. I’m glad it’s coming back, even if it is for only 2 ‘specials’ on 2 Tuesday nights

And Casey, Nine doesn’t air rugby league on Saturday nights in NSW and Qld!

  14. I really hope this works out. Just as long as Ossie comes back too. I really missed him when he went.

Hopefully they can get Red and Molly back on board too, although I hope the show can eventually return to Saturday.. I mean ‘Hey Hey It’s Tuesday’ doesn’t quite sound right.

  15. Would love this to work but how can it? Darryl was starting to get annoying back then how could he be any better now? I have a bad feeling about this. Maybe just the reunion show and then leave it alone before the good memories are tarnished. Look forward channel 9 not back – your desperation is embarrassing.

  16. Anything that’d replace Nine’s ultra moronic Australia’s Funniest Home
Videos show at 6.30 pm Saturdays gets my thumbs up. A new 90 minute version of Hey Hey could work, provided the format was updated, that it’s actually on Saturday nights (compared with the AFL Ten usually screens on Saturday nights and what Seven, ABC and SBS also screen) and gets fronted by new younger hosts (rather than any older previous ones, including Daryl himself). The only downside is Nine often have their live NRL league matches on Saturday nights for NSW and Qld viewers.

  17. A billion dollars that the show ehn back on air, if the ratings are good, will turn out crap… All the people in support of it will go, hey this isn’t what it use to be and switch off… Then again bye bye hey hey!
