Hey Hey it’s Tuesday

After ten years off air, Hey Hey will return to Australian television for two live reunion shows but not on the night which made it famous.

heyhey1Hey Hey its Saturday is coming back to television.

TV Tonight can reveal Nine will bring the variety back for two live shows, on a Tuesday night, away from its traditional Saturday night.

The move is designed to undermine strong programming by rival networks. The show is being trialled to see how well it is performs, with a view to a renewed series.

It is likely to return in early October, just short of ten years off air.

Cast are being approached for the specials although more recently both Red Symons and Molly Meldrum have been regular Seven personalities.

Hey Hey’s return will follow a recent fan revival via a Facebook petition and viewer poll on the Today show. Co-creator and host Daryl Somers is known to have been eager for the show to return for some time.

Nearly two years ago when he was with Seven it was reported that the network had declined proposals to revive the show.

Last year there were also reports of exploratory talks with David Gyngell.

This week Somers told ABC Radio the show’s return is “not out of the question” and speculated that one or two reunion specials could be made in the near future.

Hey Hey its Saturday enjoyed an extraordinary 27 year run on Australian television, making household names out of such characters as Dickie Knee, Plucka Duck, its zany segments including Red Faces and cemented the status of Ossie Ostritch.

  1. Daryl has been rather obsessed with getting Hey Hey back on air.

Good luck to him atlhough I very much doubt Ch 7 will release Red Symons or Molly Meldrum from their contracts to go to a rival production.

I was amused to read a few years back that Daryl blamed the show’s demise on Andrew Denton – claiming he talked the show down.

Will be interesting to see how the reunion specials go – maybe it could lead to other shows returning??

  2. Leon, which Daily Telegraph are you reading? 2009 or 1999 because in the article today it makes no mention of what night it will be screened.

I would trust David’s information before the DT anyday.

  3. Gee nine are desperate aren’t they? Well if it doesn’t work just stick on another episode of two and a half men or 20 to 1 for a change.

  4. Neon Kitten…. do you ever have anything positive to say?

Daryl’s career has spanned over 30 years…. that ain’t a failure. Even if he never did anything ever again, he’d be pretty proud of himself….and most likely set for life financially……

Try to see a silver lining somewhere, even if it ain’t on Seven….

  5. Could work if Nine had decent programming department and the brains to get the right gang but under current regime, who knows how bad this will be.

  6. Won’t do well Tuesday night. Saturday is the obvious choice. I still think that Hey Hey has had its day, and will struggle to fit in to programming these days. A couple of specials – yes – like a 10 year school reunion! But a regular show? Now that’d be like going back to school 10 year on.

  7. As much as I liked Hey Hey, it’s been 10 years, and there was a good reason why it was cancelled: it was no longer fresh. Either they’d have to change it to suit the current TV climate, or they’d keep it the same stale way it used to be, either of which would halve the potential audience.

Plus, Nine just sucks, and they’d inevitably mess it up somehow, no matter what.

  8. please Nooo!!!!!!!!! Daryl Somers is the most unfunny, arrogant, moron ever to be seen on television in Australia – just the thought makes my skin crawl! This is going to be pathetic, but unfortunately, will rate its socks off.

  9. Finally, the people at Nine have brains and are doing great things. First the awesome GO! line up, and now this. I am so looking forward to this. I remember growing up with it back when it was on. It was the only time my parents would let me say “Dick” (Dickie Kneee).

I am so excited. I just saw an ad for A Current Affair and there’ll be a segment on it on Monday I think.

    Hope they renew the series.

  10. I think this will fail for Nine. I was wrong about MasterChef so maybe I’m wrong here, but this is a poor judgment call IMO.

Mind you, I was a fan of the show and it’s still very funny if you watch the YouTube clips.

  11. No Ch9 you idiots.. It wont work properly unless it’s on Saturday Night!.. And don’t bring them back for 2 shows. Bring them back for good!

  12. I wouldn’t mind seeing Point Of View with Dr Bob Santamaria come back to our screens as well? Is this possible, what with CGI technology these days reviving the dead?
