MasterChef: Chris eliminated. It’s Poh v Julie!

Beer merchant and hot favourite Chris Badenoch has divided viewers, but the judges have dashed his dream of becoming the winner of MasterChef Australia.

cbMasterChef Australia‘s first finale will be an all-girl affair following the elimination of Chris Badenoch from the TEN cooking contest.

41yo Melbourne resident Badenoch was considered a front-runner for the title, but was cut from the show after a lengthy cook-off with their own inventive dishes.

Joining the judges was cookbook queen Donna Hay.

It was a contentious decision given that he was defeated by the ever-popular Julie who did not complete all her dishes.

But beer merchant Badenoch has been a divisive contestant, with many fans of the show having difficulty with his abrupt style and attire. He has also been the subject of press articles, including as late as today, on his romantic life. The perils of reality television.

Matt Preston said to Badenoch: “You have been the competition’s most consistent performer but today let youself down. The execution of these three dishes let you down. Tragically that’s enough to send you home. We know we’ll be drinking your beer and eating your food in your beer bar in 6 months time. And there will be a beer book. No doubt. Thanks for the pigs head, for the hat, for the dry Melbourne humour. We’ll see you around.”

George Calombaris said: I’ve never said this to a man before but I love you!”

Gary Mehigan said: “You’ve impressed me and George many many times.”

Badenoch said: “I’m tired, I’m strung out and the pressure is ridiculous. To get to this point and not make the final two is devastating. It means everything to me.

“It’s hugely disappointing.” Chris said. “But Top 3 is an achievement and you will be eating in my establishment sooner rather than later. This experience has turned my life on its head and I won’t forget this. My future is bright, full of beer, and full of food, and I can’t wait.”

mca38yo Julie Goodwin from the NSW Central Coast will face off against 35yo Poh Ling Yeow from Adelaide for the inaugural title on Sunday night.

  1. Good on you Julie! I think Julie is a great example of what mums are doing in the kitchens all over Australia. As a mum of two I’d like to think my cooking is “MasterChef” quality.Julie has a great dream and I hope her dream comes true on Sunday night.Put me down for a copy of her cook book!!!!!
    Good luck Julie.

  2. Bill & Bev….congratulations, I totally agree with you!! Poh shouldnt even be there right now. I wasnt a Chris fan, by any means, so I am not disappointed that he has gone….(although he cooked some terrific looking dishes, they were something I persoanly would never have an interest in recreating).
The fact remains that Poh got a massive advantage over thousands of other people by being given a (unfair, in my opinion) second chance at the auditions. Then she got eliminated during the course of the show. She may be a brilliant cook, but she has twice failed to outcook her challengers.
Julie deserves to be there because she has never been eliminated and has been there from day one. Her challenger for the title should be someone else who has been there without being kicked out earlier….whether it be Chris, or Justine, or someone who might have made it further had Poh not been given another chance by being bought back.
Go Julie….I would buy her book for sure.

  3. Chris was going to go no matter what he cooked it already organised
his food looked too good so they all said it tasted no good.
All of his food has always tasted good.
    You do the math.
But Chris Just because your head resembles the pigs
dosent mean anyone wants to eat one. Man lose the pig fetish.
Who calls themselves a beer merchant anyway !

  4. Johno, you obviously know nothing about food, did you actually watch last night? if so, did you not understand the brief?
“Chris’s food was crap” …. really, he was asked to deliver a cover shot, he did that, sorry I must have missed Julie’s. Tell me which it was, the collapsed chicken, the ordinary lamb roast and unseasoned potato or the pathetic slice of cake?
“Julie’s food was good, Chris’s was crap” ….. really! pushed herself out of her comfort zone didn’t she, really broke all the rules, a great culinary mind, and innovative!
Johno, I don’t need to grow up, I just have a clue, do you?

  5. Chris has a terrific vision. Using the whole animal, using creativity and innovation to create superb dishes. Chris showed ingenuity and was able to get a whole new generation of men into the kitchen. His cookbook would reach thousands.
One cannot help but wonder why Donna Hay was so biased in this instance. Watching her body language, comments and responses, Chris was unfairly judged by her when compared to the women.
How many people would want to buy Julie’s cookbook, one full of random family pictures and recipies that anyone could find in any old cookbook? Not me. Maybe her target audience of middle aged women.
Chris brought a whole new level of ideas and really is the most deserving of Materchef. Good luck to him. The judges knew that he and Justine would make it on their own regardless. On the other hand, Julie just does not have the appeal.

  6. I liked all of the last 6 or 7 contestants and didnt really care who won. Julia could have easily made a great Masterchef just as much as Chris or Poh or Julie.
Having said that, lastnight has lost me. I was sure that the whole idea was to cook and complete 3 dishes that would be included in your cookbook. Poh and Chris did this with time to spare. Why were the rules changed to allow Julie to deliver unfinished dishes that didnt look good ( we can all put a slice of cake on a plate ). Sorry because I like Julie but very unfair to Chris. And I love pigs trotters etc and would dine at his restuarant.

  7. Time and time again, Julie gets away with sub-standard dishes and other contestants (who are actually worth a damn) are sent home. She’s like the female version of Sam, but at least Sam got eliminated at some point. The pie challenge was bad enough. Yesterday, she didn’t even have half her crap on the plate and she managed to knock out the most consistent performer in the competition who actually got something on the plate. It just astounds me how blatant this rigging is.

In terms of this particular challenge, I would put it down to Donna Hay’s burning hatred of Chris (did you see the look on her face when he said he didn’t pay much attention to the plating?) And of course there’s Julie’s sob story about proving to her kids how far tugging at the heartstrings can get you.

I thought that the whole point of difference between this show and other reality TV shows was that it was all about cooking and not about personalities. Obviously, I was wrong.

  8. “mandy nichols says: Malasian cooking who cares. bring her to my home and i bet i’ll eat Chris or Juile’s food .before that rubish.”

That is so funny. How many people have actually tasted real Malaysian cuisine? So Mandy, if that’s you, you are calling it rubbish without even having tried it! LOL. How narrow minded are some people? OMG, it looks weird and I’ve never heard of it so it must be rubbish! ROTFLMAO.

  9. How could Poh be back in with another chance when she was eliminated? She was even given a second chance when she stuffed up at the auditions when everyone else had only one chance. She had been eliminated that should have been the end for her. We both honestly think that the final two should have been Julie and Chris. Poh should not have been given so many chances. Thankyou Bill & Bev

  10. Julie’s concept for a cookbook sounded anything but original. Schools sell books just like Julie’s at fetes as fund raisers. I bought a book from the local primary school made up of recipes from families and it even has some blank space at the back for my own. Julie seems like a nice person and a decent cook but not a chef.

  11. I have been a Chris fan from day one so I am pretty disappointed in last nights verdict.

I saw him as quietly confident, which is a big difference from ‘arrogant pig’ – also for someone who ‘never smiles’ there seemed to be an awful lot of smiling footage of him last night!

Donna Hay was an absolute disgrace – totally sexist and rude.

  12. Julie could take a dump on a plate in the final and the judges would like her meal and give the title to her. It is totally rigged.

Poh could cook a masterpiece and the judges will find some b******* excuses why it is crap.

The show is kinda tragic how blatant the favoritism towards Julie is.

  13. I am glad Chris is gone & Julie is in the final 2, yes she didn’t finish plating her 3 dishes but what was on the plates looked good & from what the judges said tasted good & I for one will buy her cookbook it sounds terrific, Julie to win.

  14. I thought the show was about finding a “Masterchef” … Not a home style mum or some one pushing Malaysian Chinese cooking…. I feel the Masterchef was lost many weeks ago…. I feel the format should be changed … They should be judged on all food cook over the series. Points should given for all meals and the final result is based on the end totals.

  15. Masterchef definitely lost all credibility last night. And to all those people making comments about Chris’s hair, hat and looks its about the cooking and he deserved to be there. Julie in the final – what an absolute F***ing Joke!! Donna Hay – Pathetic!!

  16. I think people are whinging for nothing here. The judges looked at the food presented to them on the night. Julie’s tasted better. Chris fell short. End of story. People were having a go at Chris when he was winning and doing well, now it is a rort he is out. You cannot win them all. Julie or Poh will be deserving winners. I’m sure Chris will do well whether he is the Masterchef or not.

  17. WTF ! I still cannot see how the 3 judges can agree on keeping Julie in the show
Chris is a bit of a knob lets be honest, and a beer and pigs trotter restaurant
is not going to get many people exited.
So he lost because he did not put enough importance
on the cook book and too much emphasis on producing better food
    than the others.
They should rename the show “Master cook book ideas”

  18. Listen….rigged or not rigged Julie is a very marketable, she is what the shows producers would want…she will go on to make a huge successful career and pot full of money …good on you juice…you have what it takes. So to all the negative comments regarding Julie give her a break….or does it stick in your throat to much that she just might take out the title?

  19. I have truly enjoyed Masterchefand am sad that like all good things it must come to an end. I admirer all the contestants for having the gumption and the self confidence to ‘have a go’. Chris was my favorite from the start as I liked his concept of a “Beer Bar” and his passion for cooking in his unique style. Reared in the country I am a whole beast person myself.Like many others I felt the ‘Wild Card’ return contestants was a bit unfair, but that is reality TV it has to be controversial. I believe the use of the pressure cookers last night was Chris’ downfall.Another day he may have made a different choice. Ideally I would have liked to have seen Chris and Julie in the final. I like Poh but she was eliminated. I have enjoyed the judges and thank all concerned for a great break at the end of a busy day as I cook dinner for the family.

  20. Lauren, I couldn’t agree with you more! I also went to the boathouse last weekend…. I think our judge needs to have a look at his own establishment and what is served, pretty ordinary food, very ordinary coffee, I won’t be returning….

so who will win…… depends on who pulls the heartstrings the most and delivers the most tears….. lost me!

  21. The producers of Masterchef have lost me. I didn’t really have a favourite contestant. I didn’t mind who won…but after watching all but one episode of this show over the past couple of months, they’vce lost me, and I won’t be watching the final on Sunday night.

Kathy I get it. (comment 9.43am) I get that the whole thing was a package deal with a cookbook and prize money…but what I don’t get is, after all the emphasis on “cooking” and taste, they shift the goal posts last night to have the cooks start “styling” their food for a cookbook cover. I mean, Donna Hay doesn’t style every food pic in her magazines. She has a test kitchen team. She has food stylists who put the shots together….and the styling involves a lot more than just food, things like polystyrene, glycerine, glue etc…

A cookbook concept is just that. A concept….it gets tweaked, it gets changed…it has to be to get published…and by Julie’s own admission last night, all the recipes in her cookbook won’t be her own, they’ll come from other families. So to the producers…do you still think you’ve got a major hit if your viewers lose interst in the show and don’t care who wins in the end? If I hear one more time “I’m screwed” “I don’t want to go home yet” “I show my love through the food I cook for my family”.. I’ll scream.

My tip, Julie will win, even if her final meal is: a. undercooked, b. Incomplete c. covered in sweat…
