MasterChef: Chris eliminated. It’s Poh v Julie!

Beer merchant and hot favourite Chris Badenoch has divided viewers, but the judges have dashed his dream of becoming the winner of MasterChef Australia.

cbMasterChef Australia‘s first finale will be an all-girl affair following the elimination of Chris Badenoch from the TEN cooking contest.

41yo Melbourne resident Badenoch was considered a front-runner for the title, but was cut from the show after a lengthy cook-off with their own inventive dishes.

Joining the judges was cookbook queen Donna Hay.

It was a contentious decision given that he was defeated by the ever-popular Julie who did not complete all her dishes.

But beer merchant Badenoch has been a divisive contestant, with many fans of the show having difficulty with his abrupt style and attire. He has also been the subject of press articles, including as late as today, on his romantic life. The perils of reality television.

Matt Preston said to Badenoch: “You have been the competition’s most consistent performer but today let youself down. The execution of these three dishes let you down. Tragically that’s enough to send you home. We know we’ll be drinking your beer and eating your food in your beer bar in 6 months time. And there will be a beer book. No doubt. Thanks for the pigs head, for the hat, for the dry Melbourne humour. We’ll see you around.”

George Calombaris said: I’ve never said this to a man before but I love you!”

Gary Mehigan said: “You’ve impressed me and George many many times.”

Badenoch said: “I’m tired, I’m strung out and the pressure is ridiculous. To get to this point and not make the final two is devastating. It means everything to me.

“It’s hugely disappointing.” Chris said. “But Top 3 is an achievement and you will be eating in my establishment sooner rather than later. This experience has turned my life on its head and I won’t forget this. My future is bright, full of beer, and full of food, and I can’t wait.”

mca38yo Julie Goodwin from the NSW Central Coast will face off against 35yo Poh Ling Yeow from Adelaide for the inaugural title on Sunday night.

  1. Finally Trotter man is gone. Poh to win. His elimination just made the show so much better. Yes Julie didnt finish all of her dishes, but at least the judges enjoyed eating them.

  2. I have a bad taste in my mouth. The programme is Masterchef – it is about cooking sheer and simple, not about marketability. The best man did not win. I will not be watching anymore. It is a big con. I am gutted.

  3. Rigged, rigged, rigged. This show is ludicrous and so transparent. Julie is consistent just like Chris, consistently one of the worst performers. Pretty obvious they want Julie to win the whole thing. She presented bland, boring meals like she would serve to her family.

    Last night had to be;-
Innovative and look great. Of course Julies looked like a joke and was as innovative as Vegemite on toast but she till managed “somehow” to get through.

No matter what Poh does Julie will win. Julie could plonk down a chop and one pea and somehow the judges would love it. Or perhaps a scoop of vanilla ice-cream with chocolate topping and yet somehow manages to be “just great” .

It’s rigged as they want to sell cookbooks and Julie appeals to all those overweight mums out there.

  4. Last night Master Chef Australia became a joke. Chris has been beaten to the final by Poh (who was previously eliminated because her food was not good enough) and Julie who failed to plate a single dish on last night challenge. Donna Hay had it in for Chris when she walked in the door and Julie went to the old sympathy trick with tears and talk of her cookbook being about her family, that should fill one page what about the rest?
In the last week Julie has had a disaster with everything she has cooked and still made the final. Is this fair?
Chris’s attitude at times was arrogant but he had still earned his place in the final unlike the the 2 above contestants for the above reasons.
Of all the contestants in this competition Chris has had a definate goal and always worked towards it. Good luck for the future Chris I am sure you (unlike all the other contestants expecially the finalists) will make good and your business will be highly successful with both Drinks and food (cooked by yourself) even if the judges dont agree

  5. RE: Kathy and Ryan.

We do get it that Julie had a clearer vision of her cookbook that will probably sell better than the other two. But the whole show has been about the cooking and taste. The show is called Masterchef, not Mastercookbook.

The judges for the whole season kept harping on that its all about taste and cooking ability.. but yet the final week, it comes down to vision?!?

  6. I would not buy any cook book but Julie’s …I am no Master Chef nor will I ever eat in a place a Master chef will be cooking …I will cook Julie food.
I think she should have a tv show to go with her Cook Book and call it by the same name.
Poh will most likely will cook food that someone will pay an obscene amount of money to eat …I don’t think I qwould enjoy it at all only the fried meringues.
good luck to both and Julie go publish your book …I will be waiting in line.

  7. I am glad the hatman is gone. It finally good to see him gone. Last night he was appalling. He was cooking for a cookbook and all he had was brown, brown and more brown. Plus his food was given bad tastings so the worst chef went last night. Fair and simple. Sure Julie didnt plate up everything but if something tastes better than a complete dish then i know who i would have gone for.

Poh was like on cruise control last night. Its going to be a close one thats for sure.

  8. Just a personal opinion. I would not pay for Julie’s meals in a restaurant. I would not order meals I could cook at home – eating out is a treat for me. There are so many homestyle cook books already, I don’t want another. I would have bought Justine’s, Julia’s, Chris or Poh’s book but I’m not interested in what Julie feeds her family. Her meals are ordinary. Sorry, but I think the Masterchef title should go to someone extraordinary.

  9. It is a lot about presentation.

When a pig trotter is presented to you by someone that is wearing the same old hat(indoors and out) they have worn every day for the last six months and needs to at least wash their hair once in that time, the dish does not seem appealing.

I like a bit of hygene when it come to food preparation. Chris was a walking food authority violation.

It is good the grot is gone. He just didnt send out the right message.

  10. Also I meant to say earlier

Amy said ‘In the beginning she was given a second chance run during the audition… why not others?”

To set the record straight, many others did get a second chance, but they were not caught on film. She was certainly not singled out.

  11. Didn’t anyone listen to the judges commenting on Chris’s food last night? They not only didn’t like the presentation, they didn’t like the taste. They said very clearly that the texture was grainy and it tasted like something was missing. They also said that the flavours didn’t come together well. They also made a point of saying that they would judge Julie’s food as unfinished…and even though it was unfinished it tasted better and looked better than Chris’s.
A couple of days ago I was reading comments here that Chris was the judge’s favourite and was going to win…now most people are outraged that he was eliminated. Make up your minds people!

  12. its sad to see chris got out yesterday…but what failed him was the pressure cooker.
That’s probably what makes his food tasteless…but he is a good cook..well done chriss

I don’t know why u all think that the show is rigged…as what the judges said you as good as your last cook.
Poh and julie cook was good and chris needed flavour

But I think…they are all winners…the fact that they are standing as the top 3 shows them how well they work under pressure …

Worth to watch sunday last show…can’t wait for masterchef UK to be shown on tv

  13. Porkchop – you are so right. Those who don’t want to accept the judges’ verdicts and insult their decisions and integrity – Don’t watch. Go play in your sandbox. Take your football and go home. For God’s sake. Talk about infantile comments.

  14. The question is “who is the most marketable person”, Julie will appeal to the biggest demographic. ( who would look the best on Women’s day and New Idea)
So it doesn’t matter who is the best cook (Chris’s food may have tasted fantastic but to get Julie through they can easily discredit it).
The start of the show was all about presentation (for front covers) even Donna making comments about Chris’s ‘To brown’ cooking.
But presentation was somehow over looked in judging.
I think that most people of Australia no it’s all about profits. It’s sad that some good chefs have sold there ‘Food Soul’ for television.

  15. Why all the negativity? Think about it logically. Of the general market who is going to buy Chris’ book if he won? Julie and Poh have a lot better chance of selling more books! I personally love Julie, and have loved most of the contestants. All these remarks just remind me why I didn’t like Chris – whinging and making excuses!

  16. Last night was a joke! How the hell does Chris get eliminated when Julie does the soft option (very ordinary lamb roast) and the presentation was terrible. Where the cover shot??
This decision was so bad based on the brief. I am a professional retoucher who works mainly on FMCG, food photographer for publishing is never eaten! The brief was to present magazine food, prepared for a shoot…. did Julie meet the brief…. no, did Chris meet the brief…. yes.
Sure it might not have tasted that good, but, I didn’t have to, it was meant to be for a photo shoot.
I won’t be watching Sundays night final, and more importantly I have cancelled my Donna Hay subscription based on her comments last night. She had it in for Chris as soon as he walked in the room, maybe Chris should learn to cry, he might still be in the competition! Mastercryer rather then Masterchef maybe

  17. Did anybody notice that there was no footage of Chris returning home? No family and friends waiting for him? I’m not saying that he doesn’t have any family or friends, just that it’s interesting that he didn’t get the same “coming home” treatment from the producers of the show that all the other contestants got.

  18. Poh makes every effort to do something special & remarkable for the viewers. Malaysian dishes are very delicious, easy to cook and are getting very popular everywhere. I am a Poh and Julie fan, but leaning towards Poh, as she shows great consistent in every dish. She will be remembered for her speciality

  19. Well said Ryan… finally someone that get’s it:-

“This is sooo funny!! ok now people its put simply and here it goes. the shows winner recieves 100 grand to establish a cafe/ restraunt etc plus the cookbook. The winners tonight had to have a clear vision of where they would go if they had won, which is very important since were at the finish line.”

Chris did not have the vision, Julie did – and her cook book will sell. She ticked all the boxes, and now is in the finals and I am putting my money on her taking out the title. Donna Hay has a vision, hence why her cook books sell/appeal to the wider audience, and Poh, whilst a clear vision in what she wants to do, her cook book will not be a ‘big hit’ compared to what Julie’s will be.

I cannot understand why no one get’s this…..

  20. What a disgrace! Julie gets through to the final round… come on! Is this show about finding Australia’s best Masterchef or is it about selling ratings for channel 10. Oh my god it sickens me the way Julie is always throwing her kids into it… talk about going for the sympathy vote its disgraceful… talk about rigged! I will not being watching the next season… ripped off thanks alot channel 10!
