MasterChef’s nine minutes of excess fat

MasterChef's 90 minute episode actually ran from 7pm to 8:39pm. Yet it was pre-recorded. Why?

mchqToday many viewers are venting their anger over the decision to eliminate Chris Badenoch from MasterChef Australia.

Readers on this site, as well as the forums on the official website, are unhappy that having delivered consistent dishes he was banished from the finale over a cookbook vision. In truth the judges weren’t happy with the taste of his final meal, but as readers point out, Julie had not even finished plating and has seen highs and lows all week. Alas, that’s life in reality television.

Many are unhappy with guest judge Donna Hay having such influence at a crucial stage. Indeed, there could well be reason next year to consider “blind judging” across the final week. As successful and as excellent as the show has been, it has not been without some questionable bending of the rules, most notably bringing back eliminated contestants.

Meanwhile TEN should also be slapped for screening the show from 7pm to 8:39pm. But the show was pre-recorded.

Does the word ‘edit’ no longer equate in this country?

It was already boosted from its 30 and 60 minute editions, padded out with flashbacks to character journeys of the final three. And still it couldn’t come in under 90minutes…

On Sunday night we will all be suckered in by 120 minutes as Poh and Julie face off in the pre-recorded finale.

What are the chances Glee will actually start on time, please?

  1. Chris was the master of his own fate. I regret his failing, but he chose dishes that needed a lot of time and chose to use pressure cookers that he was unfamiliar with using to get over his time problem. It didn’t work. I don’t doubt that if the food was better he would have overcome the brown problem.

And Donna Hay really was just useless.

  2. I’ve had my fair share of bitching about Seven and especially Nine running overtime, but the fact that TEN keep their EPG updated all the time is good, and rarely is there a time when they run over what the EPG says. 🙂 For those of you still relying on print guides.. Boo! Go digital already!

  3. I’m not sure why Ten is being singled out in the practice of shows running late. Seven and Nine are equally, if not more, guilty of the same – especially if a show has a bit of ratings clout like WWTBAM in its hey day. And shows like ACA and TT are padded out to run beyond their 7pm finishing time with ads for the next night’s show disguised as “coming up next”

I’m not excusing Ten but just saying its a trend among all networks.

  4. I agree with Ryan below. I think the poll you’re running on this site says it all. (Currently) 49% of pollers believe Chris deserved to go with only 32% saying it was unjust. Furthermore a mere 16% overall feel strongly against his dismissal.

People inevitably have their favourites, and they’re going to be upset if ‘their’ person gets knocked out. But let’s all recognise it for what it is, a fantastic reality show that has really dominated the box for the past couple of months.

As for the extra 9 minutes baloney, this all seems a bit of stretched attempt at flinging a little mud at MasterChef in it’s final stages. Get over it peoples. No station is ever going to change. They all want to keep our attention.

  5. Whilst 8:30 pm should mean 8:30 pm, at least Ten’s EPG stated that the show would end at 8:39 pm and to their credit it did indeed end at 8:39 pm. If only 7 and 9 could adjust their EPGs as well as Ten does theirs.

  6. its no big deal as pointed out by andrewb as the EPG was correct to the exact minute. theres no rule stating that shows have to end/begin at 30 minute increments. As long as all the tv guides state the correct times, then i dont see a problem.
hardly any shows excluding news bulletins begin exactly as stated and unfortunately its the viewers who lose out. i wonder if ACMA or freetv aus have received complaints over this issue as its been occurring for years.

  7. I know a person who edits MasterChef, and he mentioned in passing, that they were asked to come back and re-edit the last week of the show, because it is rating so well, they want to give the public “what they want”… apparently

  8. I disagree, it was great having the flashbacks and “journey” recaps for people like me that only started watching the series this week. The public seems to agree too, with 2.36 million tuning in last night.I’m usually out on weeknights and rarely catch FTA, most shows like Media Watch and the Chaser’s I just get off the net. But this show is soaring and its easy to see why, no nasty bitchiness like Big Brother and no “call for ur fav now or it will be ur fault they get eliminated! No refunds. Mobile phones are extra” gimmicks. I also think bringing back eliminated contestants is no different to Idol’s Wildcard and BB’s previous tricks, and the way some of the contestants were eliminated were dodgy anyway (such as Poh being booted over Sam for not identifying the farrow in a soup).

  9. I can only agree with the many people who have objected to Chris being eliminated from Masterchef last night. I also think that Donna Hay had far too much influence over the criteria for the night. I have never liked her books and having seen her I am equally unimpressed. I think this appearance will have done her image no good at all – hopefully this will be reflected in future book sale figures. If we can bring back Justine, Poh and Tom, why can’t we bring back Chris?

  10. I still don’t think there’s any problems with letting the contestants return for a 2nd chance. They weren’t given any benefits after they returned, they were judged almost harsher than the remaining contestants and sent packing accordingly. As for Chris, they want a chef with a clear vision who can be successful and be remembered. Chris was arrogant, had a clear vision for his restaurant but in terms of the context of the show, his dream wasn’t in line with it. He wanted his own place. Its like giving the winner of Australian Idol a book deal. It just wasn’t a perfect fit.

  11. “What are the chances Glee will actually start on time, please?”

What are the chances anyway, considering that the only 2 programmes that start on time on any commercial channel are (a) the evening news, and (b) whatever comes after it?

‘PVRs – they’re not just for skipping ads anymore!’

  12. Did anyone cry foul when Chris was pretty much handed the ‘curry’ ingredient test win against Andre?

And, I believe he even said “I didn’t think about the visuals” when asked about his cookbook…

  13. If the producers of a show doing the ratings that Masterchef is getting advise the network that after editing the show it is going to run 9 minutes longer…would any network tell them to edit out those extra 9 minutes?
    I don’t think so!

  14. Most importantly – at least the EPG showed the right time, so recording Rush after it started right on time at 8.39. Unlike channel 9 and 7. And that will no doubt be the same on Sunday night. Thankfully 10 keep start times up to date on EPGs so its not that bad. Sadly, I think we are all too used to 8.30 really being 8.35 – 8.40 now on commercial FTA TV.

  15. “Suckered in” is a bit strong…If we want to watch we will and if not we can always grab the remote…I’ll be watching the full 120 minutes for the simple reason that it is a really good show and extremely well produced. With some of the rubbish on the box these days it’s a shame to knock a show of quality!

  16. Maybe a check to see if they broke the amount of advertising allowed may hold the answer. A few people have said to me today that they felt there was more than usual.

  17. i dont care if it did run over time, the series is fantastic and i would gladly watch it 24/7 if it was on. lol. the more the better. 🙂

  18. Fair’s fair. The judges felt Chris’ dishes tasted the worst and they liked Julie’s cookbook concept better, so she got through. They tell everyone during every elimination round that they’re being judged on those dishes alone. And they have chosen based on taste for the whole series.
