Bumped: East West 101

Updated: In the week that keeps on changing, SBS delays East West 101 by two weeks.

ew1In the week that continues to undergo sweeping programming changes, now SBS is getting in on the game too.

The network has opted not to premiere its second season of East West 101 as originally planned at 8:30pm Tuesday September 29. The move would have put the show on a collision course with Packed to the Rafters, new NCIS and, until yesterday, the Hey Hey reunion. It would even compete with The Wire on ABC2.

Instead it will replace it with a documentary The Truth about Violence and Cannibas: The Evil Weed a week later.

SBS has been replaying the first critically-acclaimed series in the slot with the latest episode nabbing just 114,000 viewers. It would have been lunacy to pit one new Aussie drama against the might of Rafters -a point this site has made on several occasions.

It is extremely unusual for SBS to adjust its programming voluntarily, most changes are as a result of sporting or news events shifting. As the week of September 27 changes on a daily basis, the ABC is the sole Free to Air network to stick to its guns so far, although Seven hasn’t issued many changes.

Update: SBS advises it will now premiere East West 101 two weeks later on Tuesday October 13 still at 8:30pm. Still against Rafters and NCIS after all.

  1. Silly decision to bump it by 2 weeks. For the fans who are currently watching the repeats again (like myself), we want to continue watching the show without the 2 week break.

  2. @ J Bar: SBS has South Park at 8.30pm Mondays at the moment, however the current series has 7 episodes with another six to air later, so the timeslot is an option. But it will put East West 101 against FlashForward and The Mentalist. In fact, with tough opposition on commercial networks from Mondays to Thursdays, and SBS concentrating on documentaries on Friday nights, Rockwiz on Saturdays and Dateline on Sundays, it may have to wait until December to show the new season of East West 101.

  3. East West 101 is a fine example of Australian drama. I find myself drawn to the charcters, they appear far more complex then those that are dragged out time after time. I have struggled to warm to Packed To The Rafters, i can relate, maybe that could be the problem. To be honest i think it reminds me of the bubble gum stuff we see on Sunrise.
