Memo to Nine promotions

Last night's episode of Moonlight was promoted as a "New Series." Rubbish.

moonlightSometimes television networks are known for getting a little carried away with their promotions.

Last night Nine branded an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm as The Seinfeld Reunion. But the extensions of truth didn’t end there.

An episode of Moonlight was promoted as a “New Series.”

Rubbish.

“Fleur de Lis” is Episode Nine of the one and only 16 episode series.

All Nine did was pick up where it left off in January 2008 when it stopped the season mid-series.

There was no second series.

Nine would do well to realise the audience for a show like Moonlight is savvy enough to know more about the show than promotions team trying to bluff its way around a ludicrous programming decision.

  1. @Nate – but online guides I’ve check such at tv.com has 23 eps listed as S1 which is what I’m going by. I guess the production companies just want people to buy more DVDs at a higher total cost?

  2. The most unfortunate thing is that in the time slot next week is a repeat of Men 2.5.

I naively hoped that this would be the regular slot for CYE. After all a new episode of CYE or a repeat of Men 2.5. Nine you have not let me down.

  3. I understand sometimes the networks split a season in two for the summer non ratings period, but rather than lie to the audience and call it the “season finale” and then the “season premiere” when it returns, they should use the terms
    “2009 Finale” and “2010 Premiere”

Series Finale is saved for last episode ever. Season premiere and season finale are used when it’s actually the first or last episode of the season, as the show was produced.

  4. @ Craig.

Fox8 is actually correct with their listings of the current episodes of American Teenager as being part of Season 2 instead of Season 1. A full season of American Teenager is (production wise) 2 self-contained seasons which epguides and IMDB and all the other “name” TV sources recognise as one series.
However, unlike other split seasons of shows (like the Sopranos) which are marketed as the same season just parts I & II, American Teenager have their splits marketed as 2 separate seasons and are released in this fashion.
If you bought the Season 1 DVD of American Teenager in the US in would not contain the episodes that Fox8 is currently airing, you would need to buy Season 2 to find them.

  5. The funniest thing about the Seinfeld reunion last night is Nine had to run a little piece before the show explaining what Curb was about and who Larry David is….

  6. Yes the commercial networks think we’re morons “adults only 2.5 men” is just the same as normal 2.5 men channel ten is also spruking season 21 of the simpsons now thats a good effort!!!

  7. Nine realised it’s possible snatching of the 7 dominated Tuesday night and went with the myth based “Seinfeld Reunion” show promo. It’s funny how they headlined Seinfeld and subbed Curb.

Anyone that tuned in to expect “Seinfeld” with the ensemble cast acting all crazy and Elaine, Jerry, George and Kramer – who had no prior knowledge of Curb (let’s face it, when is this show on 9 and when have 9 given it a chance?) or indeed this episode – would have been royally disappointed and questioning what 9 were up to.

    Wonder what the ratings say?

  8. Kenny, when nine says “brand new”, i think they are referring to the the fact that they are from the new current season in the US, which until the last couple of years would normally have waited until the new year to be shown. So “new” would be a new unseen episode, that would be from the last US season.

Nick, the Seinfeld reunion episode of Curb went for 40 minutes. They could have advertised that more accurately as well.

  9. On Go!, they have a promo saying something to the effect of “only on Go! can you see the latest seasons of these shows…” – One of the shows is Survivor: Gabon, and it is far, far from being the “latest season”.

  10. 9 has form with this sort of stunt. I can remember plenty of ‘season finales’ that were just the last episode shown before they shafted a show. And you’re not wrong with ‘The Seinfeld Reunion’ – plenty of people would have watched that and thought ‘what the hell?’.

  11. I used to make promos at Nine, TEN & WIN back in the 80’s. I retired decades ago. I find the latest Nine promos ridiculous, using tags such as “Brand New”, “All New”. What does “Brand New” mean when it’s not a new brand? What’s the difference between “new” and “all new”? Surely an episode of something is just “new”. Then again, recycling old material into a “new” program then makes it … “new” as opposed to “all new”? Guess that answers my own question (LOL). Seven is just as bad with “you won’t believe your eyes”. TEN’s shock, horror expression grabs, edited out of juxta position, usually have nothing whatsoever to do with the storyline. And every 5-seconds “sex scene” from Rush has to be included in every promo. Promos have lost their impact. They are ludicrous and viewers find them misleading.

  12. Thanks David for this. Nine really need to have a hard look at themsleves. This is just a blatent lie and Nine need to apologise to their viewers for this. Nine are a disgrace and should hang their head in shame. Their digital channel GO actually aired last nights ep (Fleur De Lis) two weeks ago.

  13. my cousin called me at like 11pm going all my good the new series of Moonlight is on nine..she was so excited. I had 2 explain to her that there was only one series. Now I know why she was insisting it was the new series LOL

  14. Shouldn’t there be restictions on this type of advertising. I think it sounds like False advertsising and their should be finanical penalties. To encourage fair practises. This should apply to all TV networks.
Perhaps it oculd even apply to false advertsiign for shows statring over7 minutes late. Perhaps have a scheme, if a show if 2-3 minutes obver no penalty, if the show is over 5 minutes late and they have nt readvertised a later start time, hit them with a fine. This should get the networks to clean up their act!!

  15. I noticed the promo for Survivor on GO gave away who was in the final tribal council too. That’s just not on.
I’ve already seen that season of Survivor, but if I hadn’t, I would have been so angry!!

  16. I hate when they do this, don’t they know about a little thing called the Internet! Fans know it was not a new series and many of them would have found a way to watch it by now any way. Geez in the last 21 months you could have had a carrier pigeon bring you the series from the US!

As for the Seinfeld ‘Reunion’ another deliberate lie, also they were not on until the 3 eps at around 10pm, ratings for both will be interesting.

And while we are on networks making new ‘series’ why is Fox8 calling ‘Secret Life of an American Teenager’ S2 when according to all other sources they are still in S1 eps? They did the same thing for Kyle XY, splitting a season into 2.

  17. Honesty is not Nine’s strong point.
Throw in an inept promotions and programming and Nine truly is the king in “let’s make it up as we go along”
