Nine says Daryl asked to drop repeat

Nine says: "At the request of the host the schedule was changed."

pdIt was Daryl Somers who asked Nine to withdraw its Saturday night replay of the Hey Hey reunion.

“At the request of the host the schedule was changed. We will consider showing it once the second episode has aired,” Nine spokesperson Michelle Stamper told the Herald Sun.

It reports the request was made on Friday night, speculating that the move was to not risk hurting the ratings for next Wednesday’s second special.

The success of the second reunion is believed to be pivotal to the show securing a future at Nine. But based on last week’s success it almost seems a moot point. The show attracted bumper ratings, critical success and an nostalgic outpouring from fans.

Many of those fans were incensed at the late programming change which saw a movie play on Nine on Saturday night, in place of the replay.

On the 275,000 strong Facebook page, which Daryl Somers acknowledged during the live show last week, fans were furious, flooding Nine with protests via email and phone calls.

One fan has since asked, “Do we owe nine an apology?”

  1. i have no problem with the canning a repeat of it. i would rather wait until wednesday for the next show. maybe they saw the figures of the repeat of celeb mc and thought this wont work/ it will still smash celeb mc this week. no doubt about it

  2. Do we owe Nine an apology?
    The short answer: No.
The long answer: Why should we owe Nine an apology? Yes, it was Daryl Somers’s idea to pull the repeat, but it was Nine who had the final say. It was only a request (read the article), he didn’t take over the network like a madman and do whatever he wants. There’s a big difference, and pathetic of Nine to shift the blame to Daryl for requesting something that Nine approved. But that’s not my point. After all pulling shows pathetically is what Nine does. My point is where is the sense in that pulling a repeat at the last minute will increase the ratings? It will only totally eliminate the potential for high figures on Saturday, and cause a significant drop in Wednesday’s ratings due to angry viewers boycotting.

  3. Just read an article on the Herald Sun website that Grant Denyer is now keen to host a hey Hey-style show on channel 7. Hell no!

And here we all that Nine had no original ideas?

  4. I was curious to see what the Hey Hey Reunion would be like. I set it to record on the first Wednesday airing, but my TV tuner stuffed up and didn’t record it.

No big deal, it was going to repeat on Saturday, so I could just watch it then.

I think we all know that didn’t happen.

I won’t be watching the 2nd reunion episode.

  5. I think the main issue here is that the repeat showing on Saturday had been advertised for weeks. So I guess there are many people out there who did not watch the first screening on Wednesday because they knew it would be shown again on Saturday. So to have a last minute cancellation like this is very very disapointing.

  6. Stop complaining and move on!

Nine don’t own the rights… Somers Carroll do.. therefore at the end of the day it’s not their (9’s) decision!

And what TV station has not pulled shows at the last minute?? The only one giving anything a go at the moment is Ch10 and look where that’s getting them… no ratings + no advertising = no money.

Whether Darryl has an ego or not at the end of the day for whatever reason it is the smart business decision to make! And boycotting the show? Really? If you are that much of a ‘fan’ then you’ll be watching to make sure it’s back permanently!

  7. Get over it already! You missed a repeat! Just pull out one of your VCR tapes from 15 years ago and watch that. Problem solved. Channel 9 pulled a scheduled programme at the last minute and people are surprised?

  8. ego maniac, control freak, smart business all true and one more very greedy, but he owns the product so i guess he can do whatever he sees fit

  9. People whinge when repeats are all we see on TV and now people are whinging because something wasn’t repeated. The level of negetivity regarding this comeback is astounding. Doesn’t it negate the whole reason for this feelgood nostalgia trip, not to take it seriously but just have a bit of fun?
I dislike Nine as much as most people do, but seriously we should be happy they brought Hey Hey back at all. Doesn’t change how people feel about nine but you have to take the good when you can.

  10. >Nine are shocking. Today’s Herald Sun has a story about Nine cutting NRL coverage in Melbourne just after the final whistle.

No complaints when they did that last year.

  11. Hmmmmm. Pulling a repeat showing because it will Hurt ratings? I thought it would only pick up new viewers (isn’t that why The Oz Apprentice and other craptacular shows are repeated)

Could it be that Somers Carroll may have been threatened with legal action showing it again with borrowed Ch 7 “stars”? That’s more plausible.

Nein coming out and placing the blame squarely at the feet of Daryl smacks of blame shifting.

BTW Daniel McPherson is vanilla. Bland. Boring. Haven’t watched DWTS without Daryl.

  12. Ego maniac, control freak or smart business man? I say smart business man. Pulling the first repeat is a smart thing to do.

As for people who say he doesn’t respect the viewers and is just looking out for himself… if he doesn’t pull the repeat and the second show doesn’t rate well then there won’t be the permanent return that the fans are clamouring for!

  13. since when does darryl have the final say, it was still nines decision in the end, did darryl decided to chuck a fit unless he got his own way. shame that it now has all this the negative publicity after rating a so well and getting such good reviews.

  14. Now that I know it was Daryl who had the repeat pulled, I’ll be boycotting this Wednesday night’s episode along with my friends. I was looking forward to the second episode but now my opinion has changed of Daryl so I’ll be staying away. Nothing worse than a control freak.

  15. lol. i was wondering where all the daryl haters that were so vocal during his time on DWTS had gone for the hey hey discussions.

i agree with Jack!, DWTS with dan macpherson is such a relief. the show needs someone without a huge ego and dan suits it so well, daryl was soo wrong for it. one of the very few host changes that has been successful in this country.

i am skeptical about a series return, sure the reunion shows there is still an audience, but people need to remember the reasons it was axed back in 1999. it was way to expensive and it was getting dated. both of which will only be magnified 10 years later.
