Matthew Johns’ contract expires

Updated: Former Footy Show regular Matthew Johns sets his sights on TV production with the possibility of appearing in a variety show.

mjFormer Footy Show and NRL commentator Matthew Johns has declined an invitation from Nine to renew his contract.

In one of the year’s biggest media stories, Johns was stood down by the network, following the now notorious NRL sex-scandal revealed by Four Corners.

But Johns was never actually sacked by Nine.

The Daily Telegraph reports today his contract with Nine expired last week.

Johns was widely expected to play a commentating role in the NRL finals series, but preferred to give his family with more time away from the spotlight.

More recently he has been appearing in fundraising events for charities.

UPDATED: Johns has confirmed plans to start a television production company with John Singleton, with suggestions he could appear on camera in a new variety show.

  1. theres only one thing that i would like to know about the whole matty johns saga, why did tracey grimshaw single him out and virtually ruin his career, but convenietly forgot about anyone else invovled, if other people were involved why not name them as well, sorry 2nd thing what was the outcome of the whole story, no follow up on the others guys no news on how the girl ended up in fact a now dead story, i do believe in justice for all, miss grimshaw you clearly only believe in ratings and feelings for yourself only

  2. He’d still be at Nine if he did the right thing and apologised to the woman unreservedly rather than fudge it before the 4 corners program. Has no one to blame (e.g. Media etc.) but himself and the morons who were also there.

    1. FJ: I have deleted the comment you have referred to. I take all comments submitted on the basis of good faith and broadly speaking I don’t drill down into IP addresses and email addresses unless required. 99% of the time most comments are submitted genuinely, though not everybody uses a valid email address (which is actually a requirement of Comments Policy). Thus far I have not required people to register / log-in and would hope it doesn’t need to be introduced.

  3. That is a sad loss for Nine. Despite the controversy, Matthew was great on both the Footy Show and as part of the commentary team. Wonder if Wendell Sailor will take his place if he doesn’t play next year.

  4. Sensible decision Matty.Miss ya heaps but family comes first.Sadly sh*t sticks as they say & while you almost lost what some people only dream of, what matters most came through.
All the best Reg,Trent & all those hilarious characters we loved, you old shagger.
