Survivor: Tocantins update

A programming change so bizarre it could only come from Nine.

ssSurvivor: Tocantins, currently airing on Tuesdays and Fridays on GO! will see its finale air on Tuesday December 1st.

It airs in a two hour 8:30pm finale followed by the 1 hr reunion.

This is a change from the previous plan to conclude on Friday November 27th. Tuesdays, feel like a better fit for the show after all…

But the switch creates a highly unusual -dare we say bizarro- situation (and frankly only something that could come out of Nine)….

Survivor: Samoa will now start on Nine before Survivor: Tocantins concludes on GO!

Whaaaaa?

The season in Samoa is set to begin 7:30pm Tuesday December 1st on Nine, one hour before the Tocantins final episodes end on GO! While it makes very little logic, there shouldn’t be any spoilers in Samoa that ruin the Tocantins wrap.

Tues Dec 1
7:30pm Survivor: Samoa premiere Nine

8:30pm Survivor: Tocantins 2 hr finale GO!
10:30pm Survivor: Tocantins reunion.

We’re all gonna need a Bex and a lie down after that one.

  1. For those who are worried about Samoa running overtime and missing the start of Tocantins, do what I’m going to do: record Samoa. Watch the Tocantins finale, then watch Samoa later. Problem with that is that could mean low ratings for Samoa.

And 1 episode a week is fine for me. Gabon was fine at 1 a week. 2’s OK, but anything more than 2 is too much. 5 is ridiculous.

  2. Just be happy that they’re actually showing it. If I was a non-downloader, this would be like Christmas to me because 5 hours of Survivor in one night on FTA? And Samoa being relatively close to the US’s airing?

You guys need to remember that just 1-2 years ago Nine was so behind that it wasn’t funny. If I was a non-downloader I would be so much more appreciative of what Nine is doing…at least they’re frikkin showing it. To all you people who can’t afford broadband or whatever excuse…I really, really wouldn’t complain.

  3. So what was the point of rushing through it at 4 or 5 episodes a week then channel 9 and Go?

Also why does Go have no idea of what programs they are showing? For example when I was watching my 1am recording of Vampire diaries I saw an ad for Go Thursday night of Moonlight at 8:30 then Drop Dead Diva at special time of 9:30 problem was Drop Dead Diva isn’t on House of Wax is.
Also epg guide still say Drop Dead Diva.

  4. Survivor should be on twice a week because eliminatons occur every three days. An episode on a Monday and another on Thursday would keep most fans happy. One episode per week drags it out too long and people either start losing interest or seek further episodes from you know where.

    PS: Survivor Samoa is excellent.

  5. The only reason they have had to show so many episodes of Tocantins is if they went at the rate of one or two episodes a week we wouldn’t see Samoa for another few months and would be further behind.

So they have to find someway to catch up.

  6. After watching Micronesia twice a week, I felt one episode of Gabon each week wasn’t enough. GO! Should have had 2 episodes of Gabon each week and this wouldn’t be an issue. It also would have given Nine or GO! the option to fast track Samoa.

The most disappointing thing about Tocantins’ scheduling is the removal of daytime repeats. Many people have digital, but how many have a DVR? Some people need the repeats.

  7. I’ve kinda ditched Tocantins, so it’s no skin off my nose. I can’t pack in 5 episodes a week, and it’s a shame they’ve had to stuff it in so quickly, almost getting it out of the way. If they replayed them during the day, yes I could catch up – but the replays are like 2 or 3AM or something ridiculous like that. I’m not gonna by a HD recorder just so I can record one show.

  8. not really that bizarre, 9 treats GO! as a completely different channel. If you were visiting Australia you would never know GO! was part of 9.
Unless they are planning to follow 7/7TWO and cross-promote between the channels I don’t really see what is wrong with the above, then again, I’m not really a Survivor fan.

  9. well, i don’t think i can complain. Before I would complain about “why isn’t Survivor on TV?”. And now within a few months, we’re overloaded with Survivor episode. I’m happy.

    still, what crazy programming!

  10. Somehow your warning on the home page David made me take the leap and I guessed what Nine had done. Yep, only Nine could do this. It won’t spoil things, but still… There’s a little error in mentioning Samoa begins on GO! at one point in your article. Samoa has been an amazing season so far. Viewers are in for a treat.

  11. Why dont Nine simply delay it a week? They have no hesitation delaying other shows. Oh well, Survivor fans get 4 consecutive hours of Survivor on December 1st. Putting it that way don’t sound so bad.

BTW David, in the last paragraph, i think it should read “The season in Samoa is set to begin 7:30pm Tuesday December 1st on Nine”
