Between the Lines, a little more Ed…

Today Nine will shoot a new sports / variety pilot for Eddie McGuire, Mick Molloy and Rachael Finch.

edmcguireNine will today film Between the Lines, a pilot for a new sports / variety show to be fronted by Eddie McGuire, Mick Molloy, and Rachael Finch according to the Sunday Herald Sun.

It follows previous sports-style pilots and talk shows ideas featuring McGuire and would mark the third variety format for Molloy and Nine.

The pilot is reportedly being considered for a Monday night slot, a night where Footy Classified has previously aired.

And on top of the Hey Hey its Saturday season and The Footy Show it would also return some showbiz glory to the GTV9 studios.

The set would see presenters and guests on a round “island” stage, surrounded by the audience and feature live acts, big international guests, and audience participation.

“It will be a very different set and something we haven’t seen before,” a source told the newspaper.

“It will have a strong sports influence, but not be completely dominated by sport.”

In August McGuire shot another panel show pilot with Peter Berner.

If this one got picked up the new show would be likely to commence after the Winter Olympics, given McGuire is a presenter in Vancouver. Added to his MMM radio slot, Hot Seat gigs, plus other media commitments, it would put the “Everywhere” back into the “Eddie.”

  1. wow channel 9 next year have a few big shows coming that i reckon will work v,hey hey,new footy show, winter games, underbelly 3,and now this and a lot more i reckon next year will be a good year for nine

  2. Pilot – more like a certainty. Eddie just can’t keep his mug out of the camera’s way, probably his own idea.

Prediction, Flop – try as you will Eddie, no one has ever been able to walk on water.

  3. i was hoping he would go back to hosting the footy where he belongs. too make the show a heap better than it is now. o goody helliar back on before the game. the unfunniest person and more of the unfunniest charater that has been made up. just what people need

  4. Why do they keep giving McGuire a gig? I don’t know anyone that doeskin switch off their TV when he comes on. Hell I’ve changed the channel when an advert showing him comes on!

National sports shows don’t work in Australia simply because you have to alienate either Rugby League or AFL supporters.

With so many great focused shows around that cater for so many sports, why would anyone tune into a show that barely grazes over as many sports as possible.

This all might have worked in the 80’s when people had no access to see sports they loved, but in 2009 you can watch any sporting league from anywhere in the world via cable or the internet.

  5. I don’t hate Eddie. I don’t hate sport. I do hate over exposure of anyone or anything. Channel 9 is not a dedicated sports channel yet they are drawn to all things sports related even when it doesn’t make sense. I just don’t get it.

  6. They’re obviously doing this because they have seen how well Hey Hey has done through crazy stunts, live performing acts and audience participation in the variety format. To that I say, good on them. Australian television needs more variety. I see this possibly being more of an earlier version of The Footy Show which was really good and fun.

We need more fun on our television not stupid crime shows like Bones, Castle, City Homicide, Criminal Minds.

With Nine announcing that its 2010 schedule is predominantly crime-themed, it is really good to see them balancing this schedule with variety shows like Hey Hey, Between the Lines and The Footy Show. Maybe even Top Gear Australia might head in this direction as well, I certainly think that a variety format would make the show better.

  7. Why would Mick go back to Nine – the home of so many disasters – when Ten has given him a format and group of people that actually works for him?

Of course, I realise the answer is money. But what happens when this mess is axed in a few weeks?

  8. Maybe wait and see what it’s like before bagging it. Mick does have a way of presenting rubbish on 9 but maybe he’s learnt something from the experience i.e get a decent script and panelists. Finch is no doubt there as eye candy only.

  9. Sounds interesting. Though kinda funny as it seems Mick has now possibly left 10 to return to 9.

Anyway not really a fan of sports, but will definitely check it out for the live variety element.

  10. Does this mean that Footy Classified won’t be back. It better be I enjoy that show. Also isn’t Mick Molloy doing before the game anymore. Maybe Pete will come back and do it now he isn’t doing radio.

I thought with Mick’s history he wouldn’t risk doing another variety show. At leat he knows if he stuck with Before the Game his job would be secure.

If eddie is on instead of classified I won’t be happy.

  11. Anotger boring 9 AFL show. I suppose Finch will be instructed not to mention Rugby League although she is a supporter of the game.
    I won’t be watching Quagmire.

  12. Look, I’m just going to delete Nine from my PVR and source the good stuff elsewhere that they don’t show anyway.

    Eddie Maguire. Sheesh.

There’s about as much imagination in the Nine boardroom as there is in a self-help group for people who don’t quite understand the missionary position.

  13. Where do I start???

    Why Eddie, Nine? Whyyy?
If ‘The Footy Show’ is about showbiz glory, I’m sure I’m not the only one who would agree quality TV is dead and buried

This is even better health promotion than Norm’s ‘Life be in it’ campaign. Turn it of and get outside!
