Nine confirms Cops LAC drama

Nine's new cop drama is confirmed and CEO David Gygnell reveals a third channel for 2010.

police1The Nine Network yesterday confirmed its new Sydney drama Cops LAC as part of its 2010 Programme Launch.

The “Local Area Command” drama was first leaked by TV Tonight in early November.

As previously noted, the characters in the series include 2 Academy graduates, one male, 29, one female, 19; a third generation cop who wants to become a detective; an ‘old school’ Senior Sergeant on the cusp of retirement; an early 30s detective who can read human behaviour in an instant; a mid-40s female Inspector with an impeccable work ethic; and a Superintendent who is smart, strategic, and respected by his peers.

The series, set at ‘Seaview Local Area Command,’  is believed to begin shooting from next May as 13 x 1 episodes, with a second shoot to begin immediately thereafter.

Meanwhile David Gyngell also announced a third channel for Nine next year, following the success of the GO! brand.

“GO! is the new Channel TEN, and Channel Nine is the old Channel Nine,” he suggested.

Nine will offer a catch-up service to include Warner titles such as Two and a Half Men, Cold Case, and The Mentalist.

“Our Warner studio output deal allows us to provide a 28-day catch-up after it’s been on air,” Sales Director Peter Wiltshire said.

But Ninemsn chief executive Joe Pollard said talks were continuing on beginning catch-up services next year.

Nine’s Programme Launch moves to Melbourne today for the last of its 3 day media tour, where more new announcements are expected.

  1. @Jeremy Very True. Go is a great channel but they will need to start making their own Australian content if they want to start calling themselves “the new ten”.

  2. another cop show – great, just what we need.

I guess their plan-b was a medical emergency room show- “Doctors – LAC” (local area clinic) :

The characters in the series would contain 2 college of surgeons graduates, one male, 29, one female, 19; a third generation doctor who wants to become a surgeon; an ‘old school’ Senior doctor on the cusp of retirement; an early 30s surgeon who can read human behaviour in an instant; a mid-40s female doctor with an impeccable work ethic; and a nurse who is smart, strategic, and respected by his peers.

  3. I don’t buy Go being the new Channel 10 after watching Drop Dead Diva last night and seeing their Saturday night line-up – Green Acres, Get Smart and Hogans Heroes…?!?!?! I was watching a lot more Go, but these new programming decisions that are being made has made me turn off it very quickly. Gossip Girl in a ridiculous timeslot, taking The Hills off Saturdays, changing the Saturday night lineup into 40 years ago…

  4. I think I will find myself being LAC intolerant in 2010.
I would assume the new channel will have to be in HD, unless go moves to HD, and the new one takes the SD format. The bitrate for all these secondary channels are horrible and need to be fixed. The 7TWO and SBS2 watermarks are like a smear on the screen on some nights. I think the new channels only seem almost perfect on a CRT TV. HD Plasma and LCD, not so good.

Cant wait for catchup eps of 20:1, Two and a Half Men! Not!

  5. Winter Olympics would be the perfect time to launch the new channel – which has to be HD as Nine and GO need to stay in SD. But they would need to make sure they show key Nine shows that are made in HD like Underbelly on the HD channel as well even if not at the same time.

  6. I’m glad channel 9 is again becoming the old channel 9 by bringing back old favourites but GO! is much better than channel 10 could ever be by not only showing new stuff but great older shows as well.

  7. Nine are building quite a good roster of oz dramas what with Rescue:Special Ops,Sea Patrol,Underbelly and now Cops LAC. Throw in Sevens City Homicide and it’s looking good for next year.

  8. “Channel Nine is the old Channel Nine,” he suggested. Yeah, right. It isn’t and it never will be again.
“GO! is the new Channel TEN”. True, with all of those endless old TEN sitcom reruns – The Nanny, Hogan’s Heroes, Seinfeld, Just Shoot Me, etc., etc.

  9. I wont be watching! Seriously can they think of anything other than cop shows? It sounds horrible just reading about it. Third channel sounds good as long as it isn’t only a catch-up.

  10. I agree GO! has taken the mantle of youth programmer from 10, but until they start to produce Australian youth shows they’ll never fully connect with the aussie public. Their line up is great… but it’s all stuff pulled from the states.

  11. To compare GO! to TEN is ridiculous – since when does TEN screen old, old sitcoms and TV shows for the bulk of its programming? And that’s where you’re going wrong Gyngell, if your version of Nine is still the same old Nine. Same old, same old…you said it.

  12. Seaview Local Area Command. SLAC. It sure is slack drama thinking. Just confirms what we all know – Underbelly was an accident, not to be repeated. Nothing original well get past Michael Healy. Lame, Tame, Same, Same. It wont work guys. The success of Underbelly on your network has changed audience expectations. Must try harder.

  13. Crazy. Look I’m a 2 & 1/2 men fan but showing more of it?. What about all the classics from the 70’s 80’s and 90’s?
