Alex O’Loughlin locks on Hawaii Five-0

After much speculation, Alex O'Loughlin has been confirmed as the new Steve McGarrett in the remake of Hawaii Five-0.

After much speculation, Alex O’Loughlin has been confirmed as the new Detective Steve McGarrett in the CBS remake of Hawaii Five-0.

The Aussie actor will play the role of the head of the Hawaii State Police portrayed by Jack Lord in the original series. It is his third US series lead following the short-lived series Moonlight and Three Rivers and roles in The Shield and Criminal Minds.

O’Loughlin will join Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim, who will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly in the adaptation by Fringe co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and CSI: NY executive producer/co-showrunner Peter Lenkov. Looks like Daniel Dae Kim will be stuck flying to Hawaii, the location for Lost, for some time yet.

Hawaii Five-0 has been on the cards as a remake for some time by CBS, but the latest attempt is the closest it has yet come to being a reality.

  1. CBS believe in Alex because he has what it takes to carry a show. I think this new show will be great and with Alex’s new movie The Back Up Plan, due for release mid year, it will shoot Alex into the stardom he deserves.

  2. @koverstreet. Ed Bernero who does Criminal Minds, is not behind this version of Hawaii Five-0. He was the one who created a son character called Chris. This is the vision of Kurtzman, Orci and Lenkov (who will also be the showrunner. He works on CSI:NY at the moment). They are writing the show with the original characters, although obviously changing them dramatically, making several of the original characters female too. There are also much more character driven aspects to this show (the pilot at least) than with the original show.

I believe CBS really wants to do this show, and they really worked hard to persuade Alex to come on board, so I’m hoping it will get the star treatment that NCIS:LA and The Good Wife got last year. I’m really hoping this is the one that gets Alex O’Loughlin the attention he deserves.

  3. Fingers crossed Alex, love ya work, but alas remakes of old tv shows just don’t make it.Why aren’t you on the big screen? You’re a good looker & a good actor. And keep that shirt off.

  4. Jerome. The Good Wife isn’t going to Fridays. CBS has stated tuesdays will stay the same. Unlike Australia US stick by their word and timeslots. Sunday needs two new crime shows with This and one other probably going to Sundays. Criminal Minds spin off will probably go on Wednesdays with the original.

  5. guys there’s no such thing as CBSParamount anymore. it’s CBSTV. but yes if this goes ahead it will go to ten.
as for it’s pickup chances this is one of the pilots CBS seem to be more commited too. the problem is; it’s CBS. they will likely renew most of their dramas and will have very few new shows with cold case and 3 rivers (and possibly good wife if its true that it’s beig demoted to Friday) the only slots that need filling. and the criminal minds spinoff is also gathering a lot of interest and i doubt CBS would greenlight 2 more crime shows.
it has to comepete for either of those slots with Chaos, Defenders, Reagan’s Law, Quinn-Tuplets, ATF, The Odds, untitled medical, and the criminal minds spinoff.

  6. @ justin – produced by CBS-paramount so I’m thinking 7 or 10 but the guy producing it also does Criminal Minds so perhaps 7.

Also the main character is Steve’s son Chris McGarret and the new show will feature an updated version of the classic theme.

  7. Remakes of old tv shows are even worse than remakes of old movies. Poor guy, don’t think this will last much longer than his other shows. He’ll always have his looks though.

  8. Even if it’s not going to be like the original it’ll be worth watching for the Hawaiian scenery.

I’m wondering if they’ll stick with the iconic theme?
