Sunrise wakes to Saturdays

The battle for breakfast has never been tighter as Seven prepares to add Saturdays to the Sunrise roster.

A Saturday edition of Sunrise will debut this week, according to the Sunday Telegraph.

How the move will impact on Saturday Disney, which has been running for 19 years remains to be seen. In December it moved to 7am as its new start-time, the same time that Weekend Today airs.

The battle for breakfast has never been tighter. Despite Sunrise‘s new-look set and format revamp, this week the difference narrowed to as close as 5,000 with Today on Tuesday.

Andrew O’Keefe and Samantha Armytage are tipped to follow their Sunday roles with the Saturday edition.

  1. Another nail in the coffin for kids programming, there isn’t much new content for kids offered on Saturday mornings. The ABC2 is for pre-schoolers, ABC3 is all repeats, Nine Go! only offers new episodes of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and Ten is all repeats.

Saturday Disney was good to watch for many years, for the many great cartoon series. Although cartoon series aren’t shown much anymore, with Disney producing more live action series now.

  2. The impact a possible Saturday Disney axing will have, is major, a lot more major than the Kids WB move (albeit, it was sudden, suiting the live program).

Viewers may see it as the death of the “old Channel 7”, as every slot, where their kids content once ruled mornings (Agro, Sat Disney etc.), is home now to Sunrise.

Any viewer boycott, would be detrimental to morale at the network.

  3. As exclusively predicted by Selma two months ago!

    2 reasons for the move:

    1. Saturday Disney had fallen too far behind Today on Saturday
    2. Channel 7 was worried that Today was getting an overall advantage by having the extra Saturday edition.

  4. And “Sunrise” still has the audacity to claim that “Today” continues to copy them.

Could think of anything worse than waking up to Andrew O’keefe on the weekends….

  5. Wow Sunrise seven days a week.

I’d say the Saturday edition of Sunrise would start at 6am and go until 8am, which would then be followed by of course Saturday Disney which would finish at 10am.
So obviously My Friends Tiger And Pooh (6:00am) and Handy Manny (6:30am) would either be dropped or shown after 10am.

David, in regards to Seven’s Saturday schedule, do you know or been informed as to when the music video show Eclipse Music TV is returning? Has James “Jesse” Tobin left the show? As the last few shows of last year had either guest presenters with co-host Virginia Lette or Virginia by herself.

  6. Seven should run Weekend Sunrise 7am-9am and Saturday Disney 9am-11am whenever possible. (sport may interrupt some Saturdays). On 7TWO Saturday Disney should air 7am-9am then Weekend Sunrise 9am-11am

  7. I’m not too sure whether this will work.

Those with short memories will recall Sunrise appeared on the Saturday on election day 2007 and the ratings for it weren’t that flash at all.

I think that both Sunrise and Today should be careful – going 7 days a week may rob both shows of their uniqueness and run their respective formats into the ground.

Also besides – how much news do people really want – especially on a weekend?

  8. In May 2009 Saturday Disney moved from 7am-9am to 6.30am-8:30am to get a jump start on the Today Show but in December it changed back to 7am obviously because 6.30 is too early for kids and Saturday Disney still beats the Today Show at 7am to 9am

  9. This is a welcome news and a good wake up call for Weekend Today to improve Saturday Today. I wonder if WT will extend to 3 hours now on saturdays?
But still, with AOKs mug on saturday, I’ll pass.

  10. Finally, somebody has realised that the same group of people who watch Sunday to Friday morning news might also want Saturday too. Things do happen Friday that they could talk about! Screw Disney, they can watch ABC 1,2or3. Did the networks think only children exist on Saturday mornings???

  11. Seven are getting desperate arn’t they, in my books they are.
With them having a new set and new formats, I don’t really care.. they are all the same as last year Boring.. I will be sticking to my Today show on saturday thanks.

  12. I hope they dont give saturday role to Andrew O’Keefe,l cant stand him he total idiot.Seven should give the role to some new talent at Seven, like Mark Ferguson.Iam amazed it took seven this long to start the show, they use too follow channel nine straight away, this year 1 year later lol.The talented and sexy Ms Sammy could be on every day love the gal !!!!!!
