Eddie “sick of being bagged” by Nine commentator

After Footy Classified comments from Caroline Wilson, Eddie McGuire says, "I'm getting a bit sick of her bagging me on me own channel."

Eddie McGuire was  clearly frustrated on Melbourne radio this morning when he delivered a right of reply to comments made by Age sports journalist and Footy Classified commentator Caroline Wilson.

Wilson had criticised the Collingwood President on the Nine AFL panel show last night.

After calling her claims fabricated and questioning her sources, McGuire said: “I tell you what, I’m getting a bit sick of her bagging me on me own channel, too.”

He joked that, “I might make a phone call about her today, too. Get her sacked.”

His TripleM colleagues laughed at what was clearly a jibe, but McGuire wasn’t laughing over Wilson’s broadside on the AFL show which airs in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Wilson had criticised McGuire’s handling of an on-field spray involving Collingwood coach, Mick Malthouse. But McGuire sought to set the record straight.

“I’ll give you the inside tip. Nobody at Collingwood talks to Caroline Wilson,” he said.

“She declared war on me 18 months ago, saying I shouldn’t be at Collingwood and all this sort of stuff.”

Last night Wilson conceded she has been accused of being critical of McGuire in the past.

“I know I’m often seen to be anti-Eddie,” she acknowledged, but that didn’t stop her from holding back with her assessment of Collingwood’s handling of what has been the week’s biggest AFL story.

McGuire was CEO of Nine from 2006 – 2007.

  1. If Eddie didn’t constantly use his own dual position to constatntly try andmake Collingwod bigger than football, perhaps he wouldn’t draw so much flak. Eddie’s problem is, because he part of the media he can’t stay out of the media. Really, he and Brayshaw (and I say this as a North member) and many others should not be in their dual role. Either run a club, or be in the media; you can’t do both without compromising at least one.
    Caro anoys me immensely, and gets a lot wrong (her constant jibes about how North were going to fold during the Gold Coast saga proved wrong at every turn), but if Eddie goes public defending someone who admits to being in the wrong, he’s going to cop criticism.

  2. So aren’t Ch 9 staff allowed to criticise any other Ch 9 staff, even if they are doing the wrong thing? Sounds like the sort of cover ups that constantly go on at footy clubs when players are involved in bad behaviour.

  3. Why is everyone so hard on Eddie? If Wilson hands it out, cop it back. She wants to be treated as an equal, there it is. Eddie can say what he wants, that’s why he’s paid the big bucks. And alas, either AFL identities are not. Eddie’s one of the hardest workers in AFL, and so is Caroline Wilson. And they create entertainment. Deal with it haters!

  5. Eddie, build a bridge & get over it. You get cranky when thing’s don’t go your way. I listened to your comments on Triple M football saturday (the saturday rub) when you made comments about Mick Malthouse did nothing wrong & that “St. Kilda got the 4 points so let’s move on”

  7. Well we’re a bit sick of you Eddie. Caro was spot on last night. Eddie acts like he runs the AFL and is quite happy to do what he wants, bully whoever he wants, yet don’t dare say a bad word about him. He had the gall to call us SA fan “feral”…This from the President of the club that sacked their own cheer squad for inappropraite behaviour.

    I hate Presidents, player managers etc who also have a role in the media. Eddie McGuire, Brayshaw, Olarenshaw all need to choose what they want to do because the two conflict. I’ve said i hope Seven lose the rights because they won’t show Friday night footy live, but i hope Nine lose because they have Eddie.

  10. Perhaps Eddie needs to look at himself and stop slagging off SEN (both on-air and in private discussion) as a “tin can station” before he starts crying over Caroline Wilson

  13. Suck it up Eddie. Its because you say things then later on you are made to look like a fool. Who cares if you work on channel 9. How do you know that people from Collingwood dont talk to her? Do you monitor all the people that work at Collingwood all the time.

    I bet if it was a male journalist you wouldn’t be so harsh. Just concentrate on your club. You are not a protected species at 9 you know. And you have just bagged a fellow channel 9 person you hypocrite.

  14. As much as Eddie puts his foot in his mouth quite a bit….Caro has not much credibility as a Jounalist…..a bit like another Wilson who writes for the Daily Telegraph!

  15. Caroline Wilson’s comments last night were reasonable. Eddie McGuire just looks like an arrogant bully to react this way.

    After his interview in DNA I softened my view of him. I’m starting to think he just said the right things.

  16. soak it up Eddie. Carlton has been copping it from her week in, week out for 5 years, you dont hear Carlton or the fans whinging or whining about it. But then again, we are not “Feral” “Port” fans

  21. McGuire continually comes across as the most arrogant personality on the Australian television scene (and he must be up against some pretty stiff competition there). I wasn’t aware that Nine was ‘his’ channel. It’s a pity more people don’t stand up to his bullish demeanour.

  23. Hang on, she’s commenting on the Collingwood President. Why is he exempt from criticism because he has another job on Channel 9?

    The poor corporate and boys club bully is getting some heat back and can’t take it!
