Hunky Underbelly star Firass Dirani has won the title of Cleo Bachelor of the Year.
The actor, who turns 26 today, was announced the winner at Sydney’s Zeta Bar last night, with Weekend Sunrise weather man James Tobin coming second and Beached Az cartoonist Jarod Green finishing third.
“I’m happy just to be in the top 50. That was good enough for me… The whole thing is fun. It’s good to be part of things like this. It’s fun and games,” Dirani told AAP.
While Dirani wins a new car worth about $27,000 the magazine title has proven something of a snapshot of rising stars.
More than 268,000 votes were cast, the most in the competition’s history.
Dirani’s star power has catapulted this year with his performance of a young John Ibrahim in Underbelly. His previous little-known roles include East West 101 and Kick for SBS.
Cleo editor Sarah Oakes noted Dirani was virtually unknown when the list of 50 was announced but shot from the middle of the pack straight into the top 10 with the airing of the Nine drama.

Firass also starred for a year in 2006 as the “Red Ranger” in Power Rangers: Mystic Force which is currently being shown on 7TWO at 8:30am Monday to Friday and 11:50am on Sundays.
Firass you are an inspiration to watch.
Firass is more than hot.
He’s the sexiest guy and the best looking.
You surely deserve it.
@steven guy: isn’t the winner decided by popular vote?, are you really suggesting that it was rigged, that’s a pretty big accusation to make with zero proof.
@steven guy, was gonna say the same thing. Cleo, Nine owned by same organisation. Underbelly just starting and being hyped like hell, he was the only option. He’s not even that good looking, not from the shoulders up anyway.
This guy is one to watch, his star is rising and sky is the limit…. thank god, sick of seeing Vince Colosimo playing the ‘token’ ethnic in every aussie movie….
He also had a small role as an autistic boy in The Black Balloon. =D
@steven guy – that’s about right…
Did they read out the wrong name. JT was robbed and it really did go to the underdog !
Surprise surprise, someone from the 9 network won a competition that is run by a magazine which is also part of the same empire.
Tom Steinfort missed out 🙁
