Ray Meagher West End-bound

Flamin' hell. 'Alf' is about to step onto the stage in the West End -beside some Australian drag queens.

Home and Away‘s Ray Meagher will be joining West End girls, or at least, the drag queens of the stage production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The Gold Logie nominee will take time out from the Seven soap to take up the role previously played by Michael Caton on the West End stage (didn’t anybody ask Tom Oliver?).

“I did two weeks in that role (as ‘Bob’) in Sydney when Michael Caton wanted to have a rest, and that is when the producers said, ‘Do you want to do this in London?'” Meagher told the Herald Sun.

“I think the funniest thing for me is a bloke from the bush, who cannot sing or dance, has been asked to do a musical in the West End. That appeals to my perverse sense of humour.”

Meagher, 65, won’t be donning the drag. Instead the role of the outback bloke with the heart of gold was played by Bill Hunter.

In the current West End production it is performed by John Bowe, while Jason Donovan plays ‘Tick’, portayed in the film by Hugo Weaving.

Meagher will make his West End debut with the role from September to March.
