Sticking the knife in

Eliminated contestant Daniel Aulsebrook reckons there are contestants on MasterChef who are being treated as favourites by judges.

It’s another day of bad press for the lazy susan that is MasterChef media.

It’s (usually) up in the ratings, but knifed in the media -this time by eliminated contestant Daniel Aulsebrook.

He’s told the Herald Sun that the judges are playing favourites with other contestants. His teammate Alvin is the “dream child” while Fiona is “very popular.” Both beat him in a schnitzel cook-off last night, that led to him being cut from the show.

“I felt mine (schnitzel) looked the best and I was fairly confident, as were the (other) contestants watching, that I had it in the bag,” he said.

“I wasn’t there for the (judges) tasting so I don’t know what the story is.

“The impression a few of us get is that they (the show’s producers and the judges) do have their favourites.”

Aulsebrook said some talented chefs were justified in being treated as favourites but others less talented fare well with producers and the judges.”

“I certainly think Marion is in with the judges. She is one of the favourites. And rightly so, she is a great cook and comes across well on TV.”

Aulsebrook is hardly the first reality contestant to bag a show he has been a part of. But TEN denied his claim, saying he was eliminated on his cooking skills. Unlike 2009, this year is certainly proving a rocky road for the hit show.

Meanwhile the Daily Telegraph takes a lighter tone to the show today, with a fleshy pic of contestant Phillip whose fit bod is winning him fans and even one marriage proposal.

Nobody has mentioned whether it came from Matt Preston.

  1. David I’m probably a bit naive to not know this but does Channel 10 orchestrate these post-elimination “comments” to the media? Given that the guy is only eliminated on Monday and is all over the papers and internet by Tuesday morning – even though such comments are rarely in the show’s favour the saying goes there is no such thing as bad publicity

  2. It’s TV people… If you are boring you are on a knife edge (pun intended) to get the flic.. By this time they have genuine feedback (series recorded remember) as to the contestants… Alvin will be top 10… Fiona.. not so sure… Oh and wait until the Donna Hay feedback reaches recording time… She will be suddenly “away” on other duties…

  3. @alfagirl – and yet the ‘challenge dish’ looked like something my local pub serves…schnitzel, chips and coleslaw. If it’s not cool for the contestants to cook pub grub, it certainly aint cool for the judges to serve it.

  4. Sore loser, is all I can say. While I have an inkling that the producers are giving some people more screen time (I didn’t even know Peter was there), Daniel has no one to blame but himself. Alvin had pork. Fiona had thyme. He had neither. Also, I’m pretty sure people have been told off before for using store bought mayo and Daniel still went ahead and used it. They’re little things but they add up. However, I did find his ‘food dream’ refreshingly honest.

  5. I think the judges stating that the Mayo came from a jar and the breadcrumbs came from a box is absured..If you don’t want contestants to use these and make their own….Don’t put them in the cupboard for the contestants to use Dumbasses!

  6. He used store bought mayo that was enough to put him in the bottom 2, the judges have made it clear they are too elite for pleb’s store bought mayo.

Alvie served undercooked pork, that was enough to put him in the bottom 2.

Evidently the judges dont think bought crumbs is as bad as bought mayo, and i think the fact her meat was cooked perfectly and she used thyme is what saved her.

They said a few times that it was a very difficult choice, i probably would have eliminated him too if the choice was mine, based on the mayo, overcooked meat and his confession about not being happy with anything he has given them. From memory his chips were not that good either.

Sore loser who is only going to hurt himself by harping on about it.

  7. While they were cooking the dish that put them in the elimination round they were told “This is Masterchef not Pub chef”. It was just lazy and arrogant not to make the mayo. Reminds me of Poh’s attitude in the final when she didn’t temper the chocolate and lost.

  8. Alvin and Fiona deserve it more than him. Alvin new what he had done wrong in not flattening the snitzels. This causing it to be under cooked. He’s a far better cook than Daniel. At least Fiona knows what veal is. For god sake he thought it was veal and he chose pork, which as we know was what was in the snitzel. At least fiona whilst getting the taste wrong got what cut of meat she thought it was. And to top it off he wants to be a kitchenhand. Give me a break , stick with your wine job and stay out of the kitchen. He shot himself in the foot, he knows it and he’s embarrassed.

  9. Sorry Daniel you have to play the game. When they asked you about your food dream you said you didn’t have one. That alone was Masterchef suicide.

  10. I don’t think any of the three up for elimination last night had the potential to go much further in the comp anyway, so I’ve no problem with the decision. Having said that, on a few occasions I’ve gotten the impression that there are a few favourites. Whether that’s down to the judges and/or producers who can tell.

I can’t help thinking that some of the scepticism about favourites goes back to season one when several contestants were brought back into the show after being fairly and squarely eliminated. Surely that decision was based on nothing more than who the producers perceived as being more popular with viewers (though Poh is a kickass cook).

  11. I totally agree with Daniel, sad to see him go.
Particularly sad given there are plenty of others that need to be booted first such as Accident Prone (Jake), Little “I didn’t do the brûlée” Lips (Joanne), and Low Flyer (Sharnee).

  12. The great thing about all these types of shows is a ‘nobodie’ who is good as somthing (cooking, daning, singing etc) gets to show the world (Australia) who they are and what they can do. What we see, time and time again, is people who impress (either in talent or in attitued), but dont go on to win get still fantastic opotunities and offers once they leave the show that they would not have got otherwise. If you go and mouth off afterwards you just shoot yourself in the foot. Anyone that thought ‘that Daniel is not a bad bloke, we could use a guy like that’ is now going to think twice.
