Sticking the knife in

Eliminated contestant Daniel Aulsebrook reckons there are contestants on MasterChef who are being treated as favourites by judges.

It’s another day of bad press for the lazy susan that is MasterChef media.

It’s (usually) up in the ratings, but knifed in the media -this time by eliminated contestant Daniel Aulsebrook.

He’s told the Herald Sun that the judges are playing favourites with other contestants. His teammate Alvin is the “dream child” while Fiona is “very popular.” Both beat him in a schnitzel cook-off last night, that led to him being cut from the show.

“I felt mine (schnitzel) looked the best and I was fairly confident, as were the (other) contestants watching, that I had it in the bag,” he said.

“I wasn’t there for the (judges) tasting so I don’t know what the story is.

“The impression a few of us get is that they (the show’s producers and the judges) do have their favourites.”

Aulsebrook said some talented chefs were justified in being treated as favourites but others less talented fare well with producers and the judges.”

“I certainly think Marion is in with the judges. She is one of the favourites. And rightly so, she is a great cook and comes across well on TV.”

Aulsebrook is hardly the first reality contestant to bag a show he has been a part of. But TEN denied his claim, saying he was eliminated on his cooking skills. Unlike 2009, this year is certainly proving a rocky road for the hit show.

Meanwhile the Daily Telegraph takes a lighter tone to the show today, with a fleshy pic of contestant Phillip whose fit bod is winning him fans and even one marriage proposal.

Nobody has mentioned whether it came from Matt Preston.

  1. ajf – i agree. though the bias can be annoying, it was far worse when the contestants got to pick each other off. it became more about the backstabbing than the cooking. :/

  2. This result was spoiled yesterday (Monday) morning by the 2ST Nowra Breakfast announcer just after 7am. He mentioned coming up he had an interview with last night (Sunday) evictee Daniel.

Yes I know it’s taped way in advance, it was just poor form.

  3. Its a frickin’ competition mate, jeez. Everyone except one is going to get eliminated, so odds are it would have been this guys anyway somewhere down the track. The experienced cooks and foodies have favourites? Man, if it wasn’t these guys judging, it would be the viewers… and honestly, i’d rather have people who know what they’re doing judging than the viewing public who usually have no clue and vote for favourites as well anyway.

The man should be lucky he was even given a chance. It is television after all.

  4. He used the wrong kind of meat. I’m not sure how they played favourites when he did that plus overcook it to the point of being like cardboard.

  5. What a sore loser. He couldn’t tell the difference between veal and pork and used store bought mayo. He isn’t australia’s next masterchef material.

  6. I got this impression last season. When they were cooking for the navy. I hardly saw anyone ask for po’s (sp) dish. Yet she finished very high on the tally.

  7. You never saw Daniel until last wednesday when he was team captain. The thing is he didn’t even know what meat he had. At one stage he even thought it was turkey. Then he used the wrong meat anyway, he used store bought mayo then said something like he didn’t think the judges would have minded. You should know the judges frown upon those things.

Alvin has potential and so does Fiona. You never saw Daniel dishes get picked for anything. At least the other two had made dishes before that the judges liked.

  8. @ Heath says “but somehow he managed to beat Daniel all because he identified the meat was pork!”

This is not some minor mistake, if you cannot identify pork or veal and you choose to use mayonnaise from a jar then you definitely don’t deserve to be on masterchef. There is no way the judges would use mayo from a jar and for Daniel to think that they would, just proves he really hasn’t learnt anything and does not have what it takes. He also totally overcooked his meat.

The coleslaw that Alvin served up was not cut pathetically, he obviously fixed that after the judges came around the first time.

If you think that Daniel didn’t deserve to go home then you are just as deluded as he is.

Daniel sounds like a whinger who needs a reality check, of cause the judges have contestestants they like because they can actually cook!

  9. The fleshy pic supplied to us by the Telegraph (News Ltd), who wants to look at that!
Imagine the uproar if there was a page 3 girl!

So which one of the favourites will win “The Dream Child” or “Very Popular”?

  10. this is not shocking. you can see the favourites by how much screen time they get. whether they are favourites because they’re cute/good cooks/villains varies, but you can tell who channel 10 are gunning for in terms of ratings etc.

    marion, alvin, jonathan, claire..

  11. Bottled mayonaisse, showed no remorse regarding the cut of meat, and his own admission that he was not happy with what he has served so far – it’s enough to be eliminated. Alvin has enough talent to keep him in longer, and Fiona is hanging by a thread.

  12. “I felt mine (schnitzel) looked the best “. My Jewish friends & I wouldn’t want to eat at this guy’s place, since he can’t tell veal from pork. And I’d get Bi-Lo mayo. Sore loser!

  13. I believe this is true. Alvin served up meat that wasn’t cooked, his coleslaw was cut pathetically and he didn’t even flatten the schnitzel but somehow he managed to beat Daniel all because he identified the meat was pork!. It’s becoming clear that they have their favourites and is starting to ruin the show!

  14. Sore loser much?

He snitty was overcooked; he didn’t identify the right meat nor did he pick the right herbs to put in the breadcrumbs, plus he used store bought mayo instead of making his own.

The other two had faults but I think Daniels were slighty worse.

  15. The judges would have taken into account the whole series when they eliminate the contestants and out of the three daniel cooked the worst food and by hs own admition.
