ABC / WIN playout centre blamed

MediaHub, the joint playout centre for the ABC and WIN Television, was said to have let down the ABC during the Gillard challenge.

MediaHub, the joint playout centre for the ABC and WIN Television, was shot down by Media Watch on Monday night after it was said to have let down the ABC during the Gillard challenge last week.

Now The Australian says ABC journalists are asking why a system that had been designed to save costs and make multi-channel delivery more efficient, had failed so dismally.

“We should have been on an absolute high, stories don’t get much bigger than that,” an ABC source told the newspaper.

“But what happens? We end up in the aftermath talking more about the technical problems the ABC had on the night than the scoop.”

The timing isn’t ideal for the broadcaster, which is close to launching ABC News 24.

The new facility also resulted in a number of staff redundancies as the ABC outsourced the broadcaster’s traditional in-house functions, which some argue should be done by TV professionals, not engineers.

  1. @Anne – clearly you have no actual knowledge of MediaHub whatsoever. There are no n00bs straight out of film school or tafe, and what new levels of management are you talking about? I don’t know where you are getting your information about ‘Your ABC’ but you are not well informed.

Oh, and about MediaHub.. when a national emergency hits you’ll start to realise why it was set up in the first place.

  2. The ABC colour bars are pretty. So pretty that WIN carried them with “ABC Link 1” supered for just on one minute. Then again, they were more entertaining than the garbage WIN was running at the time.

  3. The ABC/WIN playout centre is an old sheetmetal factory in the industrial wastelands of western Sydney. From the wildly fluctuating audio levels of WIN it’s obvious no one is listening to what’s being transmitted, and in most cases no one’s watching either.
Why pray for ABC4 when they can’t handle 3 channels properly.

  4. The channel is now switch on digital, the ABC & Imparja playout centre at the media hub in Alice Springs, Imparja broadcasts the Nine Network programming as well as indigenous & local programs, ABC broadcasts the programming from ABC TV, Local Radio, Radio National, Classic FM & Triple J

  5. I watched Sky News as the drama unfolded and switched across to the ABC every so often to see what they had but it only seemed to be regular programming until the KRudd press conference happened. Really disappointing for the ABC to fail so dismally when they have such great reporters and analysts to draw upon. Really hope they give the new News 24 channel the resources and competencies it deserves. For me, Sky is still the channel of choice for the big federal political events.

  6. Engineers at MediaHub? Try people off the street or straight out of Film Schoool/Tafe. There’s no ‘structured training’ .. people with less than 3 years experience from WIN, teaching babies off the street! This is ‘Your ABC’

So many new levels of mangament, so little experienced staff! This is ‘Your ABC’

Less interesting content but more promotions for merchandise and programs about promoting ABC websites. This is ‘Your ABC’

19 new producers hired, not for Televsion Production .. but ABC Websites! This is ‘Your ABC’

Your ABC? .. not even close!

  7. The ABC did have the best coverage, but there were quite a few mistakes during its coverage on the Thursday morning/afternoon.

If only Labor could have waited until ABC News 24 was up and running!
