Last Dance for TEN?

Speculation today that So You Think You Can Dance Australia could go the way of Australian Idol and Big Brother.

Speculation today that So You Think You Can Dance Australia could go the way of Australian Idol and Big Brother -to the dumpster.

The Daily Telegraph reports the axe is hovering over the show due to the low ratings for the reality series this year, while host Natalie Bassingthwaighte is due to give birth in August and out of contract.

TEN is yet to make a decision on the show, but denied there was any friction with FremantleMedia Australia after Seven signed its former show The X Factor. FremantleMedia already produces other shows for TEN including MasterChef Australia and Neighbours. Next year The Biggest Loser will be produced by Shine Australia.

“A decision on Dance hasn’t been made but I would expect something to be announced before October,” a TEN spokesperson told news.com.au.

However, in practical terms, a decision will need to be addressed before then.

For the show to be on air in February it needs to ramp up the machine a lot earlier than October. Last year TEN announced auditions in August. The Top 20 had already been chosen by November.

TEN has rarely been afraid of venturing into the unknown, shocking many with the end of Big Brother, Idol and -while not strictly a network decision- Rove. MasterChef was borne from its axing of Big Brother. That has delivered the network bigger audiences and a broader demographic than any of its other reality shows.

But it would certainly feel odd not to have any talent shows on TEN next year.

  1. im sorry to say but some people still like the show like me. there are so many talented dancers who should be able to show what they have. maybe tyou dont like it but stop baging it out. or ill bag something tou like out.

  2. Hey David, I think we all know the ratings primarily went down because of the crappy timeslot it was given. Surely TEN have noticed their continuous ability to slowly poison a show to death by either changing hosts, format or time slots (as has happened to their 3 arguably most defining until last year – Big Brother, Idol & Dance) and I really hope TEN sees their mistake and gives SYTYCD one last chance in its old stomping ground of Sunday nights where it belongs. Surely TEN can respect their history a bit more than that…! There was life before Masterchef!

  3. The US version of SYTYCD is actually run in North America over their summer recess (except for 2006, when it ran in their summer and then season 6 started a month later). Same with US Big Brother, that runs on only 3 shows week on CBS and also has an uncensored version airing on Showtime, CBS’s cable network. The same should be done by Ten here, but won’t.

  4. I’m proud of how far Dance has come though. I mean to be honest, dancing doesn’t really appeal to the masses, but for a show like SYTYCD to succeed as it has and convince people around Australia to consider taking up dancing and embrace other dancers is quite impressive.

It’s like having a TV show about Australia’s favourite new actor, where every week they perform a Shakesphere monologue and a contemporary piece. In theory, it doesn’t sound “mainstream-TV” exciting, but FremantleMedia could just as easily weave their magic to make that concept just as approachable.

If it’s time for Dance to go, it will be a shame and it definitely would come as a little shock to me, but it’s hard to ignore what it has already achieved.

And to those who are wanting the can for Biggest Loser, I partially agree. It has grown tiresome, but the one thing that I’ve always appreciated about TBL is that it is was one of the only reality TV shows whose main concept is to physically change the life of it’s contestants. Idol was for singers, Dance was for dancers, Masterchef is for cooks, Big Brother was for the sake of it, yet The Biggest Loser is for those who want to reclaim their lives. And as the audience, we were able to actually see these people physically change before our eyes.

Of course, it’s not to say TBL itself has become quite grinding with it’s heavily scripted manner, but the concept is still great.

  5. i loved this show in the beginning, but after a few lacklustre seasons im not bothered if it stays or goes.

i think they need to revamp the show, as they did with the current american season, and get new judges – all 3 of the aussie ones were awful!!

  6. it is a great show and the dancers are a hell of a lot younger than those D Grade Dancing with the Stars people over at 7.Put it on Sundays and don’t play musical chairs with the time slot for suitable offerings as TEN are often famous for doing.

  7. I think the problem this year was they messed with the formula and it put people off. But I know of people who watched this eyar for the first time and loved it! BB certainly dragged on for far longer with far worse ratings that SYTYCD – give it a chance!

  8. Not a major fave of mine, but if it was a choice to lose The Biggest Loser or SYTYCD… I’d definitely hope they would pick The Biggest Loser to leave. SYTYCD is at least some entertainment, whilst The Biggest Loser.. just about losing weight really.
