Last Dance for TEN?

Speculation today that So You Think You Can Dance Australia could go the way of Australian Idol and Big Brother.

Speculation today that So You Think You Can Dance Australia could go the way of Australian Idol and Big Brother -to the dumpster.

The Daily Telegraph reports the axe is hovering over the show due to the low ratings for the reality series this year, while host Natalie Bassingthwaighte is due to give birth in August and out of contract.

TEN is yet to make a decision on the show, but denied there was any friction with FremantleMedia Australia after Seven signed its former show The X Factor. FremantleMedia already produces other shows for TEN including MasterChef Australia and Neighbours. Next year The Biggest Loser will be produced by Shine Australia.

“A decision on Dance hasn’t been made but I would expect something to be announced before October,” a TEN spokesperson told news.com.au.

However, in practical terms, a decision will need to be addressed before then.

For the show to be on air in February it needs to ramp up the machine a lot earlier than October. Last year TEN announced auditions in August. The Top 20 had already been chosen by November.

TEN has rarely been afraid of venturing into the unknown, shocking many with the end of Big Brother, Idol and -while not strictly a network decision- Rove. MasterChef was borne from its axing of Big Brother. That has delivered the network bigger audiences and a broader demographic than any of its other reality shows.

But it would certainly feel odd not to have any talent shows on TEN next year.

  1. Yes i agree, the reason the show went downhill was definately because of the pathetic timeslots and days we were given!!!
This show needs to return and it needs to return on sundays.

  2. Meh – it was pretty lacklustre last season and was not helped by the mid week change but for me the biggest issues are Coleman and Bonnie.

Coleman seems to think every word out of his mouth is gospel whilst Bonnie must be one of the most boring judge/presenters on tv – just stop talking woman!!

Their bias was obviouc last season as well and I am getting a bit sick of Coleman telling everyone they are hot / sexy / beautiful – it is a dance show not a beauty contest.

  3. I use to watch the US version when they very first started showing it and loved it. When the Australian version came on i stopped watching altogether. Quality was terrible, judges were terrible, and Natalie was a terrible host. No big loss.

  4. As with Aus Idol as well, Australia never had the population (in terms of dance talent), to successfully sustain this concept every year, whereas North America does, but I’d do it here every 3 years.

  5. “For the show to be on air in February it needs to ramp up the machine a lot earlier than October.”

Not necessarily. Australia’s Got Talent held auditions a little over a month before it premiered, so a decision *could* be pushed as late as December if need be.

Having said that, I doubt it will return. The appeal was lost fairly quickly, it makes me wonder how the hell Dancing with the Stars is still on air after 10 seasons.

  6. how quickly people forget. season 2 was on a Sunday and it was not doing well with some episodes half a million down year on year. before it moved to Wed there were lots of people suggesting a move like it on websites like this. staying on Sunday was no an option then and it definately isn’t now.

if it does happen ten should be congratulated for finally learning to axe a show before it is completely destroying the whole network. remember they are the same people that made 5th grader last 3 seasons when it shoul’t have lasted 3 episodes.

  7. Jason Coleman and Matt are the 2 reqasons I don’t watch the show..their gibberish dialogue and repetetive mannerisms annoy alot of people..I say replace them

  8. Their Wed/Thurs night format wasn’t working. I felt that the Sunday and Monday format worked better but even in their second season the ratings fell.
I’m not sure that they can do an All Stars like the US version yet but some changes definitely need to be made.
Choreography and judging in S3 was mediocre, and the people weren’t memorable at all.

  9. A combination led to low ratings for SYTYCD this year, including an early start, and low ratings for The 7pm Project at the time (it has gone up a lot since then). But the move from Sunday to Wednesday for the performance show, in line with the US, is a right move. It just needs to be streamlined a bit and go live to air, instead of recording it on Monday nights.

  10. it was losing 400k viewers per year and was down in the 800s this year against very weak competition. all over the world it is being axed even in america the ratings are not that great. it’s not a format made to last. good decision ten if you do axe it.

but SYTYCD does make idol and big brothers final season ratings look pretty good so i doubt there was ever much deciding to be done.

poor fremantle media they do a good job but seem to be losing a lot of work; idol, apprentice, biggst loser, looks like we are down to one season of FWAW, and i doubt triple zero heroes is coming back and now possibly SYTYCD. but the do have Australia Versus and X factor.

  11. Such a shame – one of the few reality TV shows that I personally felt was still quite fresh and entertaining. But given the huge dollars I imagine this show would cost, the average of 850-900k viewers (from memory) is probably not enough. Perhaps Ten should consider moving it back to its original timeslot?

  12. so idol has definitely been axed?? is it just for this year or is it for good?? I swear i was a huge fan of big brother then they axed it, im a huge fan of idol now they’ve axed it, and now SYTYCD which i also love! Like seriously this is why i love Austar cause a show is rarely axed!

  13. I’m sure they will find another one!! And to be honest hasn’t this one run it’s course?? It is just a shame other networks don’t act as swiftly as Ten and keep lame duck shows going for waaay too long (I’d actually rather see “Dancing with the people I’ve vaguely heard of” go before this).

  14. I predict it will be canned. Last season was too much of a ratings flop for them to take another chance on it and run it dead in a prime time slot for a three month run. From memory, it was only getting in the 700Ks nationwide and I think it broke 1M only once, on finale night. That is not good enough, and I imagine it would be too much of a gamble to do again.

  15. I hope this isn’t true. Dance wasn’t helped by its new timeslot this year, following Biggest Loser at 8pm on Wednesdays. It’s a great show with great young Aussie talent but could be tweaked so we see a lot more dancing and lot less of the judges waffle and the back stories.

  16. Nooooo!!

We need a format like Dance to be on tv. I’m not a dancer myself but these people need to bring that kind of creativity to the general public.

I think, and this is my opinion only, that the reason the show got low raitings was because it was on a Wednesday.

I mean, we were used to seeing it on a Sunday night and now it’s on a Wednesday…bad choice!!

Look, give it one more go and put it back on Sunday. Masterchef will be over and we can have Dance on at 7.30pm on Sunday nights.

I mean, that is how it became so popular. I don’t understand why Ch 10 decided a midweek reality show is the way to go. Now they know it was a bad choice so they can move it back to Sundays now.

Please!! I loved that show and it would make me and so many other people happy.

  17. well if Dance goes… 10 have themselves to blame! This series featured some of the strongest dancers in the shows histroy but the decision to move it to midweek killed it. It was the perfect Sunday night show and works perfectly with a show like Merlin as a lead in.

As a huge SYTCD fan, will be sad to see the show go, but not at all surprised! I wouldn’t be surprised though if FOX8 proceed with a Australian version of UK show Got to Dance.

  18. It’s time to go…SYTYCDA.
And no doubt after another year of MC it too will go the same way.
I still think Come Dine With Me could be a big hit if the right people are involved. The Foxtel version of the hit uk show just didn’t have any pizzaz & James Valentines voice over was boring to say the least. That is half the fun of the uk version.Ten could make something of it.
The cooking bug should last at least another 3 years & then shows like Changing Rooms & Renovation Rescue could see another run.
Nine are really taking a major risk with The Block returning. This i believe will be a gamble that won’t pay off, people were well over it by halfway through the second series. Then again it depends on the “stars” of the show to get people in.
    Here comes another one!
