Rove US show rejected

Say It Now co-hosted by Rove McManus and Valerie Bertinelli didn’t get past the pilot stage.

The New York Post reports that the daytime talk show Rove McManus was working on has been rejected by CBS. Ouch.

Say It Now: Talk show co-hosted by fan fave Valerie Bertinelli and Australian media personality Rove McManus didn’t get past the pilot stage. Next!

Say It Now was one of several pilots competing for the space to be vacated by As the World Turns.

The news follows McManus dismissing reports this week that he was set to fill in for Craig Ferguson.

  1. I accept i might have been a little harsh in my judgement of Rove…..and it is a biggish deal just to get a look in over in the states……but when i look at the talent of aussie hosts and personalities the landscape is rather bare and Rove is very much the go to man… i guess im saying the talent pool is so small that we don’t have a huge choice…. but fair enough he’s better than say ….?

  2. @ Bobbie J
A valid opinion… so therefore accept the fact that others have just as valid opinions as well.
For mine I don’t think he had an average show, in my opinion it was one of the best light entertainment shows on Australian TV for a long time (certainly in it’s first few years). I also don’t think (in my opinion) he produces average shows. I am not a footy fan but love “Before The Game”… I’m not really into news or current affairs but “7PM” is now my source of TV news. For heavy & more detail I go online.

  3. just a bit of tall poppie syndrome present here. Just out of interest, to those who are putting rove down for trying to expand his career- how many tv show’s have you hosted or produced? I’m assuming, by the tone of the comments, a fair few more than Rove.

  4. Love him or hate him, the facts speak for themselves.

@Amy: Well there were 800,000-1,000,000 viewers most weeks that hadn’t rejected him. Not too bad ratings for the timeslot. To be offered even a sniff in the US is quite a big deal. Not many Aussies have had that.

@Bobbie J: I think some people feel that they need to defend him because people such as yourself talk nonsense instead of confining themselves to the facts.

He ain’t a god but to call him just an average guy is to ignore his achievements. An average guy wouldn’t have lasted as a TV host as long as he did, eventually leaving on his own terms. An average guy wouldn’t have started their own, very successful TV production company.

Maybe Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, Good News Week, and The 7pm Project aren’t to your liking (2 out of 3 for me) but their ratings and award nominations (and wins for TBYG) would seem to suggest that they are more than simply “average shows”.

  5. is this because ‘Valerie Bertinelli’ is an actor and her show ‘Hot in Cleveland’ got picked up so she doesn’t have to slum it with an unknown Aussie guy now….she has Betty White!

  6. I love it when people jump to Rove’s defence when he comes under fire ….. it’s not like he is some TV god…….he is just a average guy who had a average talk show who also produces other averageTV shows.

  7. Bad luck for Rove, who has more talent in his left pinky than the naysayers commenting here. It’s a pretty big thing to be even asked to a pilot for US TV, so he’s done well to get that far.

May I suggest that now that Valerie Berinelli is in this Hot In Cleveland show that perhaps the show didn’t go ahead due to her being unavailable?

  8. @jmgirl – It was part of the promotional poster for the 2008 stand up tour around Australia and NZ (there was also a large fishbowl set up on stage). If I remember correctly it’s a play on the intense media and public spotlight on his personal life.

@JJ *slow clap* Did you want an award or something?

Ahhh David, every time you post a Rove related article there’s always a predictable pattern with the response. Give the guy a break, he’s no longer on Australian television yet you all still manage to complain and are never satisfied.

  9. Why exactly is he looking at a goldfish in the bowl, in the accompanying photo? And why, if that is what he is doing, does he look so upset? I am experiencing mystification.

  10. I’m not sure why he’s pursuing a US career, I really don’t think he’s suited for their sensibilities. He should remain here and Produce, and host something new.

In fact, as every channel is searching around for new panel shows (that aren’t 20-to-1 clones) he’d be good at hosting one himself. Though “Fifth Grader” was a bit of a lame show with the burden of irritatingly precocious kids, he was at least an entertaining host.

  11. No surprise there. They’re probably after someone who’s actually funny. If only Australian programmers had made the same decision 11 years ago…

  12. He’s done well with 7pm prject, maybe he could bring that over to the states.

Rove as an international talk show host just doesn’t seem to work- but good on him for trying.

  13. Well I might say, that’s how the cookie crumbles, it mightbe easier to just say
‘That’s as the world turns’! For every show that gets picked up, there are a dozen pilots that are not.
