GO! just loves Big Bang Theory

Last minute changes to GO! for Thursday see a night of Top Gear and 4 x The Big Bang Theory episodes.

Last minute changes to GO!’s line-up tonight will see the screening of Sleepless in Seattle dumped in favour of three Big Bang Theory episodes. Added to the one that was already scheduled for 9pm, that leaves episodes to run from 9 – 11pm.

It will follow 90 minutes of Top Gear.

GO! did the same thing last week when it yanked Dirty Dancing at the last minute, and netted a huge 6.9% share in doing so.

It is no doubt capitalising on the idea that Thursdays are one of our softer nights of programming (Nine even has Mentalist repeats after all), but the changes are so last minute it makes like somewhat difficult for viewers to know what’s going on.

Will it do the same idea again next Thursday?

  1. I really like BBT, but Nine is ruining it as they always do their successful series by repeating it to death. I’ve already seen almost every episode at least twice and it hasn’t been on that long.

The writers of BBT understand science and maths (they have a VG physicist advisor who keeps it real, even the equations on the whiteboards are real), as well as the world of comic books and other geeky stuff. I like the way they don’t just throw in sciency-sounding but actually meaningless jargon (like Dr Who and most other so-called sci-fi shows) but use correct terminology correctly, and there’s lots of in-jokes that anyone interested in physics, computers, maths and so forth recognise and laugh at. The only other TV series that comes close to BBT for math and science humour are The Simpsons and Futurama.

  2. It started out funny, but every episode is now simply filled with consecutive strings of scientific jargon which, according the laugh track at least, is pure television gold.

    @Benjamin,
Agreed. Every time I watch it, it seems I’ve seen it all before.

  3. @ JB – I agree with your comment, I used to like the show but hate it now. To answer your question as to why it rates so well, dare I say that most of the audience are pseudo-geeks who assume it makes them seem like a “smart person” to watch a “smart show” about “smart people”, but personally I don’t think it’s any smarter than 2½ Men.

The stereotypes are also terrible, especially the character of Sheldon. Not everyone with an above average intelligence is a physicist, or a video game/comic book fan, or both.

  4. @ JB do you think that just maybe the people in the audience are also sicence types who do understand what is being said and hence they are laughing at it?

I dare say the show probably has a large ‘geek’ following so I’m pretty sure most people understand what is being said.

  5. one word sums up big bang Crap why advertise some thing for a week then change it this is so stupid of the programing department and lets viewers down

  6. You know what I’d like, I’d like a channel that, regardless of how boring or low rating the programmes were, they stuck to a line up, so you wouldn’t constantly find your self checking the on-screen guide, and being let down when a show you assumed would stay for a couple of months, has either been axed, or pushed back to the early hours of the morning.
This is what GO! was meant to be like, and it’s how 7two was meant to look. Clearly they’ve failed. GO! is coming up for it’s first birthday, but in reality, it died shortly after reaching 3 months.

  7. Hasnt GO! been spruiking its Movie Month with a different movie screening each night??!! Or is it now just screening “movies when we feel like it month” Not that id want to watch sleepless in seattle , but TBBT has no new eps and i think they are catching up to 2.5 men in how many times its been screened.

  8. I say good on ya Nine. It may towards a bigger share for GO! and a bigger share for the network by the end of the week. Nine can’t afford to lose to Seven for the next few weeks.

  9. Big bang isn’t funny. go on youtube and watch it without the laugh track. You ll laugh casue its so bad. I ve givin up try to watch gossip girl. its there one week and you want see it agin for another 5 weeks.
Can on GO/9 lift your game.

  10. I don’t mind TBBT. If they’re going to have marathons of it on Thursday evenings then it shouldn’t be on Sunday nights as well.
Speaking of South Park, is there any word yet on when SBS will resume showing new episodes?

  11. I don’t mind, as long as they keep showing South Park repeats in the late evening. That show is really funny.

Dirty Dancing?? Erk..anything is better than that…

  12. Gee… That’s strange. Go! promised that there would be a movie on every night for the next month to celebrate their first birthday and now they are saying there won’t be a movie tonight. Programming changes on Go!, this must be a first!

  13. Thanks David. I don’t understand why they don’t just fill the gap with five episodes, it’s much the same as four. Fans of South Park and Gossip Girl won’t know when these are on….grrr.

  14. Yeah, I was watching Go last Thursday night and fully expecting only two eps of BBT to be followed by Dirty Dancing. I’m very happy they dumped that old has-been movie at the last minute in favour of more Big Bang. It kept me watching for the rest of the evening. Keep it up, GO!

  15. I must have seen every episode about 5 times now and I’m not even that big a fan of the show. A show with only 3 seasons shouldn’t be repeated so much. They are killing it.

  16. OMG is TBBT the new 2.5 Men?

I love the show but really I thought the purpose of the 2nd channels was to show alternate programing of show that had not aired on FTA before? At this rate GO! will become nothing more than a re-run channel.

  17. Watched a bit of this last week, must have been bored, but i cannot understand why this show rates so well. It is terrible. Everytime they say a big long scientific word, the audience bursts out in laughter. Why do they think it’s funny? They have no idea what he just said, so they laugh. That’s like watching a French comedy without subtitles, and laughing when they say something.
