GEM tweaks schedule

GEM has made some changes to its programming line-up, no doubt in response to its first look at ratings data.

GEM has made some changes to its programming line-up, no doubt in response to its first look at ratings data.

From tomorrow Marco Pierre White’s Chopping Block (the rebranded USA Chopping Block) has been replaced by Bewitched and Allo’ Allo’ at 8:30 and 9pm. They are followed by double eps of Black Adder from 9:35pm instead of Amazing Medical Stories. The F Word will follow at 10:45pm.

On Friday Getaway and Holiday Showdown are out, replaced with movies My Best Friend’s Wedding (2007) followed by Dirty Dozen (1967) from 7:30pm.

60 Minutes will no longer air at 7:30pm Mondays, to be replaced by Animal Emergency (first-run) and Airport (rpt). They begin October 18th.

On Saturday October 23rd Deadly Surf and Animal Emergency are replaced with a repeat of David Attenborough’s Life of Mammals at 6:30pm.

These changes also apply to other block programming late at night.

There are also some movie title switches with Brokeback Mountain, The Producers, Sands of the Desert, One Million Years BC, Goodfellas and The Libertine out of schedule, but they may possibly get another shot later.

  1. Ok David, thanks for the info.

Still, it upsets me when I see all of these classic American and British shows get endless airings and yet we’re fed scraps of old Australian shows.

The current and future generations of Aussies deserve to see what previous generations watched – there are a huge variety of programs that could be shown – from old docos, to soaps, to local comedies, etc, etc.

Yes I know the likes of Mother and Son, Skippy, Kingswood Country are shown – but where’s everything else? The occassional special looking back at old shows simply isn’t enough either – I prefer to see entire shows.

The networks have a vast archive of old shows waiting to be aired again – why don’t they use it??

Apologies for getting on my high horse but it really gets me – it’s about time there was a TV channel devoted to classic Aussie shows.

  2. Can someone please explain to me why classic Australian shows are hardly getting an airing on these channels (or any for that matter)??

All I see are old British and American shows – where are old episodes of Homicide, Neighbours, Prisoner, The Restless Years, etc, etc?

There are hundreds upon hundreds of old Aussie shows gathering dust in the archives while the umpteenth repeat of MASH, Keeping Up Appearances and Vicar of Dibley are shown.

I’m getting rather tired of this and would love to see a digital channel devoted to old classic Australian shows – even old eps of Pot Luck will do – anything apart from yet another repeat of a Yank/Brit show!!!

Fair dinkum – do audiences genuinely want to see these overseas shows? There’s an audience out there for old local productions and it’s about time the TV networks catered for them.

  3. @ Mike – Given that HD channels take up something like 4 times the bandwidth of SD, and that Foxtel charge the FTAs to rebroadcast their channels on satellite (and therefore possibly a higher price unless the HD signals are reduced back to SD – no big loss there as 95% of the content on these channels is not in HD anyway), it is unlikely we will see any of them on Foxtel satellite anytime soon.

  4. I am just about over all these channels including the Parent channels. It seems that not one can run to a schedule, let alone taking a machete to the programming. I know its one of the major gripes in the user survey about shows not starting and finishing on time but it is elevating to my #1 concern. I am far better of getting a show by some other means and watching it in my time, with a known start and finish. There should be a governing body that can control stations and impose a fine if times are out by +/- 3 minutes. How hard can it be ? They never used to be this bad !

  5. Nine trying to appeal to a female audience = trainwreck.
Why don’t they hire a female programmer and let her train on GEM?
Ten have Beverley MGarvie – why is allowing women into senior management so hard for Nine and Seven? They will never succeed treating by treating women in general with contempt. Respect your audience and they might respect you.

  6. Gem definitely needs spicing up thats for sure. but these are the wrong spices.
Police Woman , Dynasty , Hotel and Good Times are 4 shows that should be on Gem because they are gems!!

  7. They might get more viewers if they sort out transmission to Foxtel Satellite subscribers. So pissed that we dont have 7mate or Gem. Spoke to Foxtel today or rather somewhere in India to be told it aint happening and it wont for a very long time. Grrrrrrr.

  8. GEM is quite possibly the worst channel. I doubt that many women 35+ even watch it. At least GO has a handful of good shows, even if they can’t be treated properly.

  9. I agree MR there is heaps of old stuff that hasn’t been screened in years Laverne & Shirley, Mork and Mindy, Maude, All in the Family, Rhoda, Designing Women. It only seems to be the same few shows that they are willing to rerun.

  10. Now if only Bewtiched was re-mastered to be in HD.

Seriously, if there is not enough content to fill GEM with shows that will rate other than those repeated thousands of times over other channels and Pay TV, why not give us back some Nine content in HD – even if at staggered times to double as both an encore and a HD screening of those shows that are made in HD (like Cops LAC for exmple).

  11. i love Bewitched but is it really 8.30 fare, and to have that leading into Allo Allo?? What sort of flow is that? Just goes to show the dartboard programming strategy of the Nine Network

And now they’re sharing programs between GO and GEM.. what is the point of building up separate brands for channels if you’re only going to spread the same shows between them.. might as well just call the channels 9Two and 9Three!

  12. They don’t give it much time to settle down…I’d like to a channel concentrate on movies…instead of just filling up their schedule with rpt TV shows…I thought GEM was going to have more movies.

  13. Hmmm the guide I have from another tv site has a repeat icon next to it . I thought Nine played out all episodes of Animal Emergency and the series was cancelled in 2008.

Having The Zoo and Animal Emergency together flows well .
