Original Munster slams remake idea

Butch Patrick, aka 'Eddie Munster,' says of NBC's remake idea,"It should be left alone."

57 year old Butch Patrick, best known as Eddie Munster from The Munsters doesn’t think much of NBC’s plans to remake the sitcom.

“Honestly, it should be left alone,” he told TMZ. “I think it shows they are desperate for content.”

But he did offer one ray of hope.

“Unless they get Brad Garrett to play Herman, it’s not going to do well,” he said.

Patrick was busy in the 1960s appearing on Mister Ed, My Favorite Martian, Daniel Boone, I Dream of Jeannie, The Monkees , Gunsmoke and Adam-12. He also made a guest appearance in a 1999 episode of The Simpsons.

But he also developed a serious drug habit. In 1991 he was convicted of beating up a limousine driver but was cleared of robbing him. He once also headed a rock band, Eddie and the Monsters,

This year he announced he would marry a long-time fan of The Munsters with whom he maintained a correspondence when he starred on the show. Which is kinda the scariest chapter of all….

  1. I really don’t get how somebody thinks this would be a good idea!! The reason people like it is because it is so camp and cheesey – it’s the nostalgia thing. I know the Gothic is massive right now but this makes no sense – if they keep the ‘campiness’ it’ll look ridiculous, if they try to take it seriously it’ll look ridiculous. It’s lose/lose as far as I can see it!

  2. Didn’t some of the original Battlestar Galictica stars say something similar when the remake came out, at that went on to critical acclaim. Granted that was a drama and remakes in general don’t have a good track record.

  3. Talk about flogging a dead horse. I agree with him, NBC must be really desperate, no are really desperate. Chuck, Chase, Undercovers, Parenthood, the Apprentice, Community & Outlaw are performing horrendously, which is half of their prime time slate. If these programmes were on another network they would have been cancelled already. It just goes to show what sort of mess NBC is really is.

  4. Hmmm… I’m guessing Butch’s memory impairments extend to “The Munsters Today” and “Here Come The Munsters”.

Anyway, the only things that make me at all interested in this idea are the involvement of Bryan Fuller and rumoured involvement of Guillermo Del Toro. Otherwise, I’d be unsurprised if this goes the way of NBC’s redos of Bionic Woman and Knight Rider.

  5. It really doesn’t suprise me they’re remaking it.

Like so many shows The Munsters is a known ‘brand name’ and has a market out there who will likely watch it.

I know it should probably be left alone – like so many others – but we live in an age where TV networks are desperate for ratings and anything goes these days.

Although I can safely say that the likes of Number 96 or The Box will never be re-made – I can imagine the moral minority would be up in arms nonstop if that ever happened!
