Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar storm off The View

Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off The View during an interview with outspoken FOX News host Bill O'Reilly.

Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off The View during an interview with outspoken FOX News host Bill O’Reilly.

O’Reilly was criticising a proposal to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

At one point, O’Reilly told Behar: “Listen to me, because you’ll learn.”

But Goldberg pointed out that there were Muslim families that were also victims of 9 / 11 citing Freedom of Speech and the ability of the public to discern between extremists and an entire religion.

When things got heated Behar stood up first, refusing to debate him anymore. She was joined by Goldberg and they left the set.

After Goldberg and Behar left the set, Barbara Walters said to the viewers and audience: “I want to say something. … You have just seen what should not happen. We should be able to have discussions without washing our hands and screaming and walking offstage. I love my colleagues. It should not have happened.”

Behar and Goldberg did return a few minutes later.

The LA Times said of the incident: “There are only two reasons to invite Bill O’Reilly on the show, or anywhere on television, for that matter: to rouse the right or provoke the left.”

This should air on Nine and W in Australia today.

  1. As if they should be fired for that little ‘stunt’. They should be commended for not putting up with listening that racism. I watched the full clip last night after they left Walters said she loved her colleges but what happened was wrong and everyone should be given the chance to speak. That is absoulte rubish. If someone is spreading a message of hate and anger they should be shut down and not listened to. The last thing America needs now is bigots like O’reilly creating disunity in a broken country. It is sad that in hard times especially people turn to people like O’reilly to feel better about themself for blaming other groups in society.

My only disappointment was that after the commercial break both women returned to the set. That made it seem weak, and staged- even though I dont think it was staged it made it seem it.

  2. Does Bill O’Reilly realize that the ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ is neither a Mosque nor at Ground Zero? It was designed as a community center with a prayer room.

  3. i Don’t blame them for leaving, but I definitely get the impression that little walk out was definitely planned for sure!

Bill is a bit of a twit – he is over simplifying the situation. I definitely don’t believe you should categorize all muslims as terrorists. Sep 11th was done by a group of extremists. He Should have apologized more sincerely for condeming a whole race/religion based on those extremists action!

  4. It’s plain and simple, he was promoting racism towards all muslims and suggesting Obama is wrong for not promoting racism against muslims.

The whole, “yes they have the constitutional right, but…..” Is the same type of racial qualifier as, “i have black friends.”

  5. @ DJ Tim
Fair enough, but i still don’t think you can lump all muslims into the one basket just because a few decided to attack in the name of islam. they weren’t speaking/acting on behalf of every muslim in the world

  6. @CK I think you’ll find that the WTC attacks were done in the name of Islam, whereas Timothy McVeigh, Columbine etc. were not done in the name of Christianity.

  7. the show the view is a disgrace any way. the women on the panel spend the whole show shouting over each other the the whole show .
    whoopi is overated anyway.

  8. typical american hatred towards muslims. he links all muslims with 9/11 but he wouldn’t link christians to all the murders that happen in america for example. Do idiots who shoot up a school who are christian mean that every should fear christains becuase they are all murderers – No!! so why should all muslims be feared as terrorists. I would have walked off too – i couldn’t bear to listen or sit next to a man with those views!

  9. @Abdul

Who mentioned “all 2 billion Muslims”? Chip off the shoulder, it’s common sense that O’Reilly was referring to the Muslims who conducted the 9/11 attacks, not explicitly “all Muslims” which is impractical anyway. I’d rather not get into a political argument here so I’ll just leave it at that. I think my first comment was adequate.

  10. @ Jason D

O’Reilly is stating the truth??? So all 2 Billion Muslims Worldwide attacked the WTC, man that doesnt get any more ignorant and bigoted than that.

  11. After watching the full show today, it looks to me like a perfect example of a deep seated fear that still exists in the majority of Americans after 9/11. It was “Muslim extremists” who were said responsible, not ordinary Muslims … but it is far too easy for us all to judge an entire group of people by the few who shout the loudest … I know I have made that mistake many times.

  12. As much as Bill “cut his mike” O’Reilly is guilty of pulling similar childish b.s. on his own show, Whoopi and Joy should have been more professional and not sunk to his level. Now this story is all over right-wing blogs as more “proof” that left-wingers can’t debate their points with respect.
