Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar storm off The View

Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off The View during an interview with outspoken FOX News host Bill O'Reilly.

Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off The View during an interview with outspoken FOX News host Bill O’Reilly.

O’Reilly was criticising a proposal to build a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

At one point, O’Reilly told Behar: “Listen to me, because you’ll learn.”

But Goldberg pointed out that there were Muslim families that were also victims of 9 / 11 citing Freedom of Speech and the ability of the public to discern between extremists and an entire religion.

When things got heated Behar stood up first, refusing to debate him anymore. She was joined by Goldberg and they left the set.

After Goldberg and Behar left the set, Barbara Walters said to the viewers and audience: “I want to say something. … You have just seen what should not happen. We should be able to have discussions without washing our hands and screaming and walking offstage. I love my colleagues. It should not have happened.”

Behar and Goldberg did return a few minutes later.

The LA Times said of the incident: “There are only two reasons to invite Bill O’Reilly on the show, or anywhere on television, for that matter: to rouse the right or provoke the left.”

This should air on Nine and W in Australia today.

  1. @ craig – I wouldn’t think there would be any outrage they would be just portrayed as christian extremeists nothing to do with mainstream christianty. Same thing doesn’t apply to muslims though.

America was built on freedom of religion and escaping the persecution in England at the time..ironic huh?

  2. The View is on at 11am and The Talk is on at 2pm.
I dont see how they compare!!
I dont think it was a publicity stunt. O’Reilly is a d***head and i agree with “Abdul” hes a Bigot!

    1. I’m not American but I doubt their forefathers put Freedom of Speech in place as a free ticket to incite hate. Isn’t about a freedom to hold a different set of values and celebrating that difference?

  3. Look I agree with Whoopi and Joy, and I I think I would do the same if I was interviewing Bill O’Reilly, but it still is a little unprofessional. We can forgive them because they are not Barbara Walters, they’re not journalists, it would 10000 times more unprofessional if Barbara walked off in any situation. I can see why they did what they did, I support them for it, if I was in their shoes I would have tried to control myself a little more. It only makes Bill look like the bigger person.

  4. @Gary

What O’Reilly stated that ‘Muslims killed us on 9/11’ Wow That’s not fact and it’s completely immoral. 19 Animals who were so called ‘Muslims’ flew into the WTC dont speak for 2 Billion Muslims worldwide. That staement O’Reily made is not only Bigoted and Ignorant it’s also considered Hate speech by many people.

  5. It’s ironic how panelists on a show called The View would be ignorant of other peoples views. O’Reilly is actually stating the truth, albeit he didn’t use politically correct terminology. The mature or professional response from Behar or Goldberg would be to explain why extremists are different, however, O’Reilly’s patronising attitude didn’t help the situation either.

  6. Well this was unprofessional although in hinsight all of those hens shouls not be on tv with the exception of Barberra Walters who has been a credible journalist for many years now. If a guest such as Bill O’Reilly comes on he makes some statements which you dont agree with you dont just walk off set like a spoilt brat, you debate him intelectually oh a forgot most of that panel have no brains again with the exception of Barbera Walters. Dont get me wrong i dislike this O’Reilly character but the more profesional thing to do would have been to as stated earlier debate him intelectually or just shut up altogether.

  7. “did anyone notice the use of Kerry O’Brien footage in the Colbert Report’s skit”

Yes! They use ABC News for set ups all the time but I’ve never seen Kerry pop up before. Very exciting. I couldn’t concentrate for the rest of the show.

And faux outrage on The View? I’m shocked.

  8. Barbara is so annoying always acting the puppeteer, it is called the view so let the others have a view. But does seem like a stunt with the new show “the talk” starting soon and looking more interesting.

  9. Joy Behar saud on her on show on CNN later that she didn’t want to sit next to someone who was promoting hate speach..that is why she left and is a valid reason.

  10. Fox News personalities are famous for feeding on Hatred and Propoganda 24/7, anyone who watches Fox News regulary is probaly suffering from Islamophobia and pretty much fear everything.

  11. Bill O’Reilly is a massive Ignormaus!

How could someone judge a whole religion from the acts of these so called ‘Muslim’ extremists. Their are close to 2 Billion Muslims worldwide, 99.9% of Muslims are Moderate peace loving people who are just like everyone else, but some people are just too Intolerant and Ignorant to believe that’s the fact.

Extremists were responsible for 9/11 not a Religion and there are Extremists from All Religions. I applaud Whoopi and Joy for walking off set and standing up against this Bigot.

  12. Interviews stay pleasant and sensible when he goes on the Daily Show (filmed in New York, Jewish host)… so maybe the walk off says a bit more about Goldberg and Behar than it does about O’Reilly.

BTW – did anyone notice the use of Kerry O’Brien footage in the Colbert Report’s skit on the Commonwealth Games last night?!
