Grant Bowler to host Amazing Race Australia

Minor spoilers: Former host of The Mole wins the hosting role on the local version of a favourite Reality series.

Minor Spoilers: Grant Bowler will host The Amazing Race Australia.

As tipped, the host was announced today following the beginning of filming in Melbourne yesterday.

The former Mole host and actor was one name rumoured to be in line for the role. US host Phil Keoghan was the hot favourite.

“I was a bit burned out recently and doing something like The Amazing Race breaks things up for me,” Bowler said.

“It’s such an exciting show to be part of.”

The Aussie teams are already overseas, rumoured to now be in Bali.

“This is such a big show. No one’s been more surprised than me that I’ve been asked to do these hosting jobs,” said Bowler.

“But I love it. It’s human psychology at work.”

Bowler should prove a winner for this one. Be careful what you take through customs guys!

  1. Grant hosting is a great move, it’s a shame this show came about five years to late. The Amazing race has seen better days, all the tasks and locations seem the same, and knowing that an Australian production will never match an American one in the reality tv genre, this will probably be a disaster.

    Australian Survivor revisited.

  2. @advocateDevil, whoops sorry excuse my typo/poor spelling. I blame this time of the year with uni assignments pouring in and me being sleep deprived and needing something to take my mind off things. :p

  3. Thank god 7, you chose Grant, if you had put on that idiot that took over the Mole (monotone idiot from the Great Outdoors) I wouldn’t of even given it a look. I’m excited now!

  4. this show wont last half the season there is noway we can put on half a show like the yanks do and with grant the host while its a good choice from the old tallent i dont think he will bring anything fresh to the show, but said that ill watch it i just dont have great hope for it. is 7 willing to spend the big bucks on it

  5. A fantastic host choice. Now bring on the copious advertisements for this and every other Seven Show during The Australian Open!

    @Shane
“Yeah I agree with David, what is wrong with Bali as they’re first leg..”

It is spelt ‘their’, not ‘they’re’ (Do you actually know that ‘they’re’ is the contracted form of ‘they are’?

    @Ryan
“This is good news. It will definatley make me more inclined to watch..”

It is spelt ‘definitely’! No ‘a’ in this word -ever! The number of people on this board who proceed to unleash their ‘intelligent’ and ‘informed’ rants yet fail with basic spelling and grammar astounds me!

  6. Yeah I agree with David, what is wrong with Bali as they’re first leg? I would be over the moon to go to Bali and I must confess (and probably sound very unAustralian in doing so) that I’ve never been to Bali before so it’s exciting news for me! And didn’t Grant mention in a press release that they had a great route planned? If he is impressed by it (aka host of Border Security) then I’m sure we will be too. 🙂

  7. Another thing. Whilst people may be understandably skeptic regarding budget limitations potentially resulting in a cheap ‘n’ nasty knock off, the actual challenges in TAR usually don’t involve much in the way of expensive props and scene setting. I think some good planning to utilise locations and cultures – as is the spirit of the US Amazing Race – will result in some challenging, entertaining and cost effective television.

    1. Look at all the choppers used on Friday. The show is hardly cheap. TAR has always visited regions nearby before hopping around the world. I don’t think people should read too much into Bali being on the itinerary just yet.

  8. Two shows spring to mind:

    1. Australian Survivor (Nine)
    2. Grand Designs Australia (Lifestyle)

One is an excellent example that proves that staying true to an original is a Very. Good. Thing. The other was a train wreck abomination.

    Seven: don’t screw this up.

  9. Grant is a good choice, but Phil would have been better. As it is, both were born in New Zealand, so accents would have been the same.

Either way, just as long as Ch 7 greenlits Season 2, I’m happy!

  10. Excellent choice. Phil is a great host on the US version but I’m glad they went with Grant because it will really make this version our own.

The host of TAR Asia made a cameo on the last season of the US version, so I like the chances of Phil appearing on ours.

Can’t wait for this. And finally, one more +1 to bringing back The Mole.

  11. well i wasn’t expecting him at all, i thought he was too internationally famous to ever host an Australian reality show again, wasn’t that pretty much the reason he stepped down from hosting the Mole? fantastic choice. i didn’t want Phil to host it, there is nothing wrng with his hosting but i think if you are going to make an Ausralian version of something don’t just make it the US version wth Australian accents.

@Mac, yes it is very rare for people to have something positive to say about an upcoming Australian show, usually coments on sites like this want all the new shows to fail. i think this will do well.

  12. Fantastic news because he is quite a classy host, and not a pre-teen looking boy-man – sorry Luke and Grant.

Now if he wanted to bring some True Blood esque shirtless greetings at the check in mat, I’d be more than happy to support that.

  13. Brilliant brilliant brilliant!!!

I do hope Channel 7 and Bowler read this blog coz how rare is it for an Aussie production to be getting such overwhelmingly positive support?

(Still bitter about not getting an audition but I’ll be supporting the show!)

  14. Good choice. Grant was great when he was on the mole and he is just fantastic on any show he is in. He is also great at voice overs. Well done 7. Better than the other names going around such as Ben Cosuins.

  15. Yay! I’m soo happy that Grant is the host. Second to Phil, he is our best pick. But over time, I think he will become better than Phil as Australia’s version will develop our own individual identity. And with Grant’s hosting skills from being on The Mole, and other relevant jobs such as presenting Border Security, he will do the show justice and hopefully get the ratings 7 deserves with a show like this, so that it will be continued to be renewed and one day when I’m of legal age, I can finally apply! XD
