If you haven’t yet read it, today’s Sydney Morning Herald had a lengthy article in which Kerry O’Brien opens up on his private life, his favourite interviews and more.
O’Brien, 65, will leave The 7:30 Report after 15 years on December 9th.
He and (wife) Sue Javes have sold their five-bedroom Mosman home and are buying a new house in the Byron Bay hinterland.
But he will keep one foot in Sydney. Having accepted the offer to host Four Corners next year, each week he’ll fly back to Sydney, where four of his six children will still live. He has three children with his first wife, Carol, three with Javes, and now five grandchildren. He and Javes’s youngest daughter, Meg, is still at home and will move with them to Byron.
Aside from hosting Four Corners, he plans to read, play golf, do Pilates and walk on the beach. “And once I’ve cleared my head, if other ideas form that make sense to do, I’ll be free to do them,” he says.
The new job is part-time – as is his salary.
His favourite interviews are listed as:
– Barack Obama in 2010
– Margaret Thatcher in 1988
– Mikhail Gorbachev in 1995
– Nelson Mandela in 1994
– Bette Midler in 2005

He was too hot for our dim-witted pollies to handle especially that “ponce” Abbot.
I hope he sticks it to these sinful corporate entities & the international financiers that are destroying the globe by stealth.
If ever someone shot a straight arrow it was Kerry O’.
I am glad to see him take a more hands on approach in 4 corners, & I eagerly await his opening stanza’s.
Good luck Kerry the Welsh boyo’s are in your corner!!
kerry was and is a great man,a true gentleman.i will follow him in whatever he does.
Thanks for the correct spelling (so glad that someone noticed) lovechild.
He was also the best in the business.
It’s good Kerry is leaving, as he hosted The 7.30 Report for too long, hence why it always skewed to a 50 + audience for too long and badly needs a younger host to take over.
@Ben Not using an iPhone there to post comments are you? I’m sure I’ve had the single-handedly becomes signal handly substitution 🙂
Single handedly, is the correct spelling pronunciation I believe.
oooh does Kerry have a “signal hand” – what is he signalling???
I hear a couple of the local papers up there are looking for journos!!! Newtaste – he has referred to Kerry as ‘O’brien” all the way through – its just a style thing!!
Sorry @Ben, but “signal handly”? I don’t think you are a regular ABC viewer…but thank you for the, er, sentiments.
His wife’s name is Sue Javes. Why have you referred to her as Javes? Twice.
So he’s back for a farewell week next week.
Guessing the interviews will be shown over the 5 nights maybe?
I hope they show some of his stoushes with the politicians. Its something really lacking when it comes to people in the media these days.
He managed to signal handly bring what little life there was into the election campaign.
Will be a great pity to lose this!
TV Legend status this man – big shoes to fill next year – he’ll be sorely missed.
he was the best in the buisness
