Nine promising “big surprise”

What big announcement, to be made shortly, is Nine hinting at?

Maybe I am overreacting, but I thought this is something you guys could have a little fun with…

At the end of Nine’s 2011 launch tomorrow in Sydney, there could be something extra-special being unveiled.

Nine Managing Director Jeffrey Browne has personally told me in the last week -not once but twice- that there will be a “big surprise” announced at the end of the launch.

The impression I get is that it’s not just a new show to be revealed.

Hmmmmmm…..I don’t really see how it can be a new channel. So is the primary channel switching to HD? Is TCN going to move house? Is Charlie Sheen going to make a personal appearance and apologise for his indiscretions and relentless repeats (which quite frankly are also indiscretions)?

You guys are always great with theories, so over to you….

Update: The surprise is PBL Media group rebrands as Nine Entertainment Co.

  1. It’s probably something lame like a new look or a new logo/watermark.

As for one of the channels changing to HD (ie GO) I’d say is beyond the intelligence of the programmers of GO or TCN as a whole.

I wouldn’t be surprised of Charlie Sheen is a special guest. It can then be labeled as “the worst big surprise ever”. Can’t wait. 😐

  2. I really hope they don’t change their look at the moment. There is nothing wrong with the Nine logo at the moment and their promos have been awesome since they started their 3D writing in September last year.

  3. Daryl Somers will be made head of programming and will ensure Hey Hey will be on air until infinity!

Either that or they are changing their logo yet again…..

  4. Once you eliminate the unlikely – extra channel (not enough bandwidth), main channel HD-only (contravenes current legislation and no whisper from Conroy about that changing soon), 2.5 spams gone (it rates too well) – and things that wouldn’t actually be a “big surprise”, it doesn’t leave much.

I’d be putting my money on GO! becoming HD (and GEM SD) plus major sport will be show in HD on GO!.

  5. What I would consider a special “big surprise”
    – A Hamish and Andy show. (And they let Hamish and Andy control it, so it is actually good)
    – They got someone good from another network (or even someone from outside TV).
    – Shows will run on time
    – Series will be shown in order
    – Series will air close to the US/UK airing
    – More new programming, less repeats
    – GEM’s current format axed, relaunched as a 24/7 HD channel, showing Nine and GO!’s programming in HD. (Eg, when Nine has Top Gear and GO has The Nanny, the HD channel would be playing Nine (Top Gear) in HD. But then after that, GO might have Lord of the Rings while Nine has an old 2.5 Men, so the HD channel plays GO (Lord of the Rings) in HD)
    – Late Night Movie will be replaced in the over-the-air guide data, with the actual name of the movie. (Not sure if this is done yet, I don’t use the EIT data)
    – Two-and-a-Half Men and Big Bang Theory are axed

What Nine probably considers to be a special “big surprise”
    – New promos
    – New set for the News
    – Eddie and/or Bert presenting a ‘new’ show
    – More “Crime” and Reality TV
    – GEM will become a Two-and-a-Half Men 24/7 channel.
    – GO! will become a Big Bang Theory 24/6 channel, with Two-and-a-Half Men on Sundays

  6. 1. a re-launch of on-air presentation new logo, reinstall still the one slogon etc
    2. big brother returns to Nine in 2011
    3. two & half men removed from schedule replaced by new show at 7pm
    4. change to programming times, themed night etc
    5. the return of a highly successful past show
    6. nine’s late news returns at 11.30pm, repeat of shows at 10.30pm
