Survivor: Redemption Island brings new twist

Survivor's 22nd season will vary its rulebook one more time, to enable booted players a shot at returning.

Survivor‘s 22nd season will vary its rulebook one more time, to enable booted players a shot at returning.

In a new, long-term tweak to its format, each of its voted-off castaways to a new Redemption Island.

There, each will live alone with the same bare-bones supplies given to former tribemates, until the next player is eliminated three days later.

Then, the two will face off in one-on-one challenges, followed by another eviction ceremony. The loser is banished from the show permanently, while the winner remains alone in exile to face the next eliminated contestant.

The last one standing will return to the main game toward the end of the season.

Survivor has previously returned evicted contestants, notably in 2003’s Pearl Islands, when exiles formed a third “outcasts” tribe. But this time everyone will know about Redemption Island and that they may face a foe once again.

The 22nd season was already filmed in Nicaragua, the same locale as the current series, which premieres in the US in February.

Jeff Probst says he and executive producer Mark Burnett have been pushing CBS to make the change for two years.

  1. OK. Sorry for all the people who may have read my comment from yesterday. I just got off the phone to Channel 9. They Do still have the rights and it Will start sometime in the next month. So relieved!

  2. Oh God! I just read that channel 9 no longer have the rights to Survivor and that no other channel picked it up!!!! Please tell me this is not true, or I don’t think my life will be worth living… (I am exaggerating, by the way, but will be very, very upset)

  3. I saw the first episode of Redemption Island in Singapore as I was stranded waiting for Cyclone Carlos to pass. Good place to be stranded! But not happy its not on here yet….

  4. Couldn’t agree with you more, Jane! I don’t read blogs, but listen to Rob Has A Podcast. I am so pi**ed with Channel 9 for not even mentioning when they will put this on!

  5. When is this going to be showing in Australia??? 1st episode already aired in the US yesterday and normally I like to read all the blogs the day after each episode, but Aus will be way behind if they don’t show it soon and it will be too easy to see who wins ahead of time 🙁

  6. Is it going to be on channel 9 again? I’ve been checking there website heaps and they don’t even mention redemption island. It’s getting really frustrating, because I know that it starts tomorrow in the US, but I have no idea when (or if) it will ever air here.

  7. This is the best show ever. But it’s going downhill because they recruit too many contestants, editing ignores people and is weird, it’s just not what it used to be and we hardly see the contestant’s personalities because there are like 20 people. I’m hoping that season 22 will be good, and I hope redemption island works. Oh and I’m looking forward to see Rob beat Russell.

  8. Sounds like a good twist and after this season they need it, but chances are the person who returns after being voted off would be on the outer with the tribe (hence why they were voted off initially) and would just get voted off again. If that happens, the whole thing would be a waste of time.

  9. This season hasn’t been the greatest but I think there was always going to be a let down due to last season being so damn good. Redemption Island does sound good though. I know it’s early but any word on whether Nine will be fastracking this to the main channel or even Go/GEM.

  10. Great! Finally a ‘proper’ twist.
@Nastash : I completely agree – this is the worst season ever. I just want the pain to end!!!
@John : Apparently (and thankfully) not. Rob’s missus Ambuh is preggers again so he wasn’t a part of it. (That is third hand info so I might be wrong). I’d hate to see another all-stars again so soon.

  11. I hope they get a better cast. The current season is The worst season I’ve seen. The cast are all so unlikable and the only player who deserves to be there is Marty.

  12. This sounds cool. Now if there is another physical genius like Ozzie, voted out because of a powerful alliance of players, he can come back and utterly spoil their plan.

  13. Oh God, this is horrible. At least, it sounds horrible. Let’s hope they get it right, because I am not a fan of bringing people back once they’ve been voted out. Although, at least the difference this time is that (I hope) contestants will know about it before they vote, so they will know there’s a chance the person they vote off could come back.

  14. Sounds like a great twist, I like it.

I just hope they get a better cast for next season. The current group are without a doubt, the worst cast I’ve ever seen on the show. There’s barely a single likable person on there!

  15. When I first heard about this I didnt like the idea because I couldnt think of how they could pull it off, but now that they have explained how it will be done I really like the idea. Will really make people think twice before blindsiding someone.
