  1. Very pleased to see Rush win the drama category. People will bag this win, but I am glad it was recognised as a good show, despite the poor ratings. I love Rush and watch it every week.

I don’t watch Rafters and noticed it did not win!! I watch Gruen, Offspring and Talk About You Gen – so I must have reasonable taste because they all won awards 🙂

  2. who would have thought that this years AFI awards would make the ARIAS look at least acceptable !! .. yes shane jacobsen did introduce willem as william and the throwing out of mock awards to the people in the crowd and nearly missing their heads was also another of this show’s awkwardness and potential disasters. The cameraman didn’t know who to focus on whenever relevant nominees/winners were revealed and the audience themselves took a while before getting up to give Reg Grundy a standing ovation… how rude of them all to sit there and hestitate before getting up !! Congratulations to Animal Kingdom. It is a great film but Joel Edgerton getting the win over Sullivan Stapletion and Guy Pearce who both particularly dominated throughout the whole movie. As someone said earlier i can’t believe that they would persevere with lame jokes/awful cringeworthy musical numbers (and what the hell was Sally Chatfield doing there ??)

  3. I’m a little torn – Woo Hoo for Rush but Tangle Tangle Tangle…

Same for Guest/Supporting actress: Love Offspring (can’t wait for some Keddie/Stewart recognition) but Deb Mailman over Asher Keddie/Sacha Horler in Hawke? Robbed. Enjoyed her in Bran Nue Dae though…

  4. Yeah Joel Edgerton winning best supporting actor for Animal Kingdom was a joke too….he was in it such a little amount that the clip they showed off him in the nominations was the one where he gets killed off! Sullivan Stapleton should have got it…he was robbed as voters just went for the more well known over better performance.

  5. The article below, by Sarrah Le Marquand of The Daily Telegraph, attacking the current state of Aus films, is a lot more interesting than the actual telecast was.
What I didn’t get, is why is an Aus film award show bothering to award Aus TV for (several of the TV awards weren’t even shown on TV), when it should stick to Aus films.

  6. Channel 7 seems to have deservedly so missed out on a walkley or an AFI… Maybe they should think about bringing hits like Kath and Kim and Thank God You’re here back??

  7. Congrats to Rush. Great show, well deserved award, good to see it get recognition.

As for Animal Kingdom. Great film, but Joel Edgerton didn’t deserve Best Supporting actor. He was in the film for about 15 minutes total.

  8. Offspring’s entry must have been for the telemovie only – the clips for Deb and John in supporting roles seemed to be from there, and the fact that Asher and Kat were overlooked altogether is baffling. I love Ms Mailman, but best supp actress over Sasha Horler and Asher Keddie in Hawke???? Just odd. Hopefully 2100 will rectify this for the leading ladies of Offspring.

  9. Im happy Rush won Best Drama, its truly a great show. Also thought Catherine McClements deserved her award for Tangle.

I think Asher Keddie deserved Best Supporting Actress for Hawke, although Deborah Mailman is such a natural at acting, and her performance in Offspring is flawless.

  10. It’s gotta be said….
While I didn’t watch all of it, of the parts I did see I thought Shane Jacobson did a Very average job.
Cracking ‘puns’ that weren’t funny, and at one point I’m sure he referred to Willem Defoe as ‘William”.
For a man of his credentials, he was woeful..

  11. There were some obvious winners to walk away from the AFIs last night – John Edwards (the man with the Midas touch), Channel 10 for at least having the b*lls to commission these dramas (and if they can get their promo side of things right, will do far better in ratings), and the ABC and Pay TV for continuing to get behind innovative comedy and drama. And slightly off topic, but am so proud Animal Kingdom received so many awards. Just a brilliant film.

  12. Agreed…while Rush has great moments its defintely not Best Drama. Season 2 Tangle was some of the best television ever made in Australia. It really was
outstanding and a rare case of the second season being much superior to the first.
Anyone who hasn’t seen it should get the DVD ( Ignore the dodgy cover art that makes it look like a stupid comedy)

While Justine Clarke would have being the obvious choice for Best Actress in a Drama for Tangle, I think Catherine Mcclements work in season 2 was definitely worth the nod, its a role alot more out of her comfort zone than Rush is and she was fantastic. Also I think Kat Stewart should have at least being nominated for her role in Season 2 Tangle as well in a tricky role she plays splendidly.

Agreed that Deborah Mailman for bets supporting guest actress for Offspring was a joke….and guest actress?/She’s part of the main cast and in every episode??
Biggest ‘ you’re joking …right” moment since that girl from Neighbours best Jacki Weaver for Best actress at The IF awards last month!

  13. Who were the TV drama judges? With respect, Rush is great iteration of a modern cop show, but it does not hold a candle to the human drama that has been bravely explored on Tangle.

  14. Yes!! Someone recognises the value of Gruen outside the ABC, excellent work, I’m glad 10 won some awards too, hopefully it’ll prove to Murdoch & Packer that keeping things as is won’t kill the network.

  15. Great to see TEN do so well, Rush, Offspring and Hawke, also Generation. Nine only getting one award for a guest spot on UB and Seven getting nothing. I wonder if they prefer to push the same tired crap for ratings than quality to get awards?

Good on ABC with the most awards again, seams to be a trend that award winning shows = lower ratings?

  16. What a waste of 2 hrs of my life,re:AFI’s..
I am a huge supporter of our industry but it is no suprise the industry is in such a mess when they cannot deliver a professional showcase about the year in film.Again with the stand up comedy routines! What is it with this mentallity, that all awards shows have to contain really bad pub humor?
And yet again rolling out films from the past.”That’s not a knife”!!!!!Give it a rest will you? What about concerntrating on the last 12 months of cinema in this country?
At least Rush did get a nod,a well polished show, unlike the AFI’s.How outrageous the sponsors name has to be mentioned everytime AFI is.
Sadly our industry has gone backwards & possibly will never come ahead again.
Oh and showig a compilation of “best of AFI’s”?What the ??

  17. I’m so happy for Rush!!!

I’m not at all happy with Deborah Mailman’s win for Offspring. She’s not bad on the show, but like John Waters, her role doesn’t ask much of her.

The supporting/guest categories weren’t very competitive this year.

I would have put Cheree Cassidy in supporting, hoping that Emma Booth would score a nod in Lead (who I think is definitely Lead over Cassidy).

I also wish more Underbelly actors were nominated. They’re a great ensemble.

The awards show was a bore 🙂 Jokes weren’t funny, presenters were awkward…
