Returning: The Amazing Race -on 7mate

The Amazing Race will be fastracked to television in a bold move the sees the show airing on 7mate.

The move confirms previous hints from Programming and Production Director Tim Worner.

It will air at 6:30pm on Sunday February 27th, six days after its US premiere.

This series will feature eleven teams of two, each returning from a previous edition, including a stop in Australia.

Utilising the multichannel means Aussie viewers won’t have to wait weeks or months to see the new series. Survivor fans are awaiting similar good news from Nine, with the new series about to launch.

Otherwise the only real downside is that 7mate is not part of the Foxtel satellite platform (can we please get these extra channels addressed?).

Seven also has a local version of TAR coming this year with Grant Bowler as host.

  1. This is good news but they should have a replay on 7 late at night for those who don’t have access to the digital channels. Also, a lot of people who have digitial channels can’t record them

  2. Gee people here are picky it’s fasttracked in primetime in HD. if it’s too early for you record it and watch it an hour later. It’s not rocket science. And if you can’t get 7mate because you are too stingy or lazy that’s your problem (a HD stb is only $49 these days), the tv networks can’t live in the past while they wait for you.

I do sympathize for the people in regional WA though I guess they’ll have to hope for a midnight rerun on 7 or watch it on Plus7.

  3. They should air it on the Monday night following its US broadcast. A week is still a long time to wait when the show is available via “other” means.
Here in SE Asia, AXN shows the Amazing Race on a Monday evening – so really just hours after it airs on CBS.

  4. Great to see that it will air so soon after airing in the US … but in regional SA we aren’t getting the full suite of digital channels till november. Oh well …

  5. Please Seven give us an encore of it – maybe 10:30pm Sundays on Seven, aren’t they repeats of Serial Killers anyway? Or at least available online at Plus7.

I suppose we have seen a similar move – 2 seasons of Survivor aired on GO! a while back.

  6. Awesome news. It means that its in HD for the first time and widescreen. Brilliant strategic move by Seven. Although i wish it was on a bit later. 6:30pm is a bit early for me.

To those saying its a stupid stupid decision is wrong. Do you want your shows in HD or not?

Knowing Seven they will air this sometime during the week on the main channel i would think.

  7. At least this will be shown quickly, and though 7Mate isnt the best, at least I can tape it and watch it later, esp since 6;30 timeslot is early. But at least this means that TAR AUS should be on soon and obviously they didnt want both on Ch7 else it would be too much.

So just as long as it dosent get axed since it wont be getting many viewers…

  8. They displayed the last season with less delay on the main channel. So I’m not sure this is a “promotion”.

It is the first season of TAR to be filmed in HD, though, and 7Mate is the only HD channel.

  9. As I mentioned before The Amazing Race Australia has to air on Seven’s main channel so everyone no matter where they live can watch the local version, as for The Amazing Race 18 US version on 7mate well people living in Regional SA or WA won’t be seen it unless Seven repeats it on the main channel, maybe on a weeknight perhaps around 11.30pm – 12.30am?

  10. Paul – you don’t have to buy ‘top of the range devices’ to get HD TV in 2011. Any set top box or TV from at least the last year or more has been HD. I personally haven’t seen any SD set top boxes or digital televisions available for sale for nearly three years now.

Drop down to the shops and grab a $60 set top box any you’ll be set with all the HD channels!

  11. Awesome news. But I kind of agree with Alex Mun, they should premire the first episode on the main channel, then let everyone know they can watch the rest on 7Mate.

  12. 7mate is not available in parts of regional Australia either. So people living there will miss out unless either 1. it is repeated on Seven’s main channel on another day and time (say Monday 10.30pm), 2. it is posted on Seven’s website, or 3. people apply for VAST (Viewer Access Satellite Television) subsidy from the Federal Government to help buy a satellite dish to receive additional digital channels including 7mate.

  13. Not everyone has access to the HD channels so it’s annoying that new shows like this, and Family Guy and American Dad are shown exclusively on these channels. (I don’t think they count as Freeview when you’ve got to buy the top of the range devices to see them).

Might they consider repeating the Race on 7Two for the SD set top box users, or even channel 7? Put it on at 130am but at least our trusting VCRs can still record it.

  14. would have thought it would be best suited for 7TWO, 7Mate is mainly made up for repeats. 7two should be used as an extention of Seven and air American shows like this on 7two that doesn’t have any room on the main channel. are they trying to say Amazing Race is just for men? cause Im pretty sure women watch it too.

  15. Really Really Really stupid decision! As the first leg is in Australia, that would be a sure rating winner if it was on the main channel. And at 6.30 on a sunday? wtf is channel 7 thinking? i thought they wanted to create buzz around The Amazing Race instead of throwing it on the forgotten pile! how disgraceful!

  16. 7mate is on Foxtel channel 207 (requires Foxtel HD of course)

Glad to see it is finally in a more family friendly time this year. Midnight finishes in 2009 were crazy. Really looking forward to the Aussie season too. Any announcement / guess on when that will screen?
