My Kitchen Rules tops 2m viewers

Seven's Grand Final of My Kitchen Rules becomes the first programme in 2011 to eclipse the 2 million viewer barrier.

Seven’s Grand Final of My Kitchen Rules pulled over 2 million viewers last night for the moment when Sammy & Bella were announced as winners.

At 2.02m viewers, it was the first time this year a programme has eclipsed the 2m barrier. Last year’s Grand Final was 1.53m viewers, with Perth viewing being affected by storm blackouts.

It was strategic coding on Seven’s part given the bulk of the show was 1.71m viewers, but the network cleverly divided the show -as so many do these days- in order to grab a headline like the one here. But it’s all fair, even if it is really like showing a peak rather than an average.

It was a one-sided competition last night, indeed Nine practically gave up the contest, relying on more of its US sitcoms. The Big Bang Theory / Mike & Molly followed (1,058,000 / 791,000) and reality fans of The Biggest Loser (808,000) seemed more interested in Seven’s cook-off.

Adam Hills In Gordon St Tonight
had to settle for 570,000 ahead of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (536,000).

Detroit 1-8-7 launched with 883,000, but figures are yet to be adjusted for MKR.

Sunrise (415,000) was well ahead of Today (299,000) yesterday.

Also worth noting some figures for ABC3’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars (146,000) and ONE’s Extreme Fishing With Robson Green (139,000) which both made the top 100 for the night.

  1. This may seem like an obvious observation, but it always surprises me when a reality show, or even a drama acheives a spike upwards for its finale or peak storyline. If MKR had been averaging 1 and a half million around, who are these other quarter to half a million extra that tune in for an annoucnement. Why would you tune in to something you had not invested any interest or time in until then? As with a Rafters birth or death – do people suddenly decide to watch a show that was not previously on their viewing radar? I don’t get it. For me, either i start a reality series ala Biggest Loser or X Factor – or not – but it holds no interest, nada, to see a finale on something i know nothing or little about. Anyway, that’s just me.

  2. I enjoyed this series of MKR because contestants are challenged to produce innovative meals within time pressure and situational variations, making them more likely to succeed if they open their own restaurants in the future.

Conversely, the main skill contestants appear to ‘master’ in Master Chef is the ability to copy a recipe created by a notable chef. Boring!

  3. MKR is a total rip off. Even that image looks like a direct copy of the photo of Julie and Poh in MC series 1 finale

  4. Anyone who has zero interest in The Biggest Loser should at least follow the four day Sydney – Hobart sailing challenge they’ve got on. Seriously impressed with how Ten have done this.
We watched MKR (terrific finale!) and recorded TBL, two ‘reality’ shows at the peak of their game.

  5. @Moanique, yup, Manu is certainly Australian television’s Hunk du Jour, to keep the French theme going. A very telegenic guy with a lovely screen presence. Channel 7 would be very happy with Manu and Pete at the moment, they did a great job hosting MKR this series.

Wow, just over 2M viewers is a great effort. I honestly didn’t think they’d get that many, I thought it would peak at about 1.8M. Quality show last night, a really great finale.

  6. I know some readers are going to say they can’t stand Karl etc. I enjoy today more than Sunrise also, I used to watch Sunrise more but when Lisa came over to Today I watch Today more. I find the way Lisa and Karl work with each other is natural and they seem to enjoy working with each other and the rest of the team. It is a bit of a disappointing gap now considering Today has had Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum on Monday and a couple of weeks ago the fun Cyndi Lauper I watched the rest of Cyndi on the computer at work.

  7. Can’t understand how Sunrise out rates Today. When I flick onto it they seem to have such fluff pieces and stupid gossip. Today also has more of it’s fair share but not as bad as Sunrise. I have to say increasingly I’m watching ABC News Breakfast (soon to move to ABC1) as I has a lot more substance.

  8. Mike and Molly had more viewers than brand new 2 1/2 Men and with just under 800k against some cooking show it did really well. Same for Big Bang Theory at 7:30pm. Pity Nine will be repeating many shows over Easter but at least $%&^ my Dad Says is back according to the Easter guide on here.

  9. Pretty impressive numbers. It’ll be interesting to see how viewers respond to Masterchef. Will they be tiring of the cooking genre or are things just heating up?
