Seven has finally confirmed the start date for acclaimed UK drama Downton Abbey.

As rumoured, the show will premiere at 8:30pm this Sunday May 29th, following Dancing with the Stars (won’t they be getting the riot act read to them to finish on time?).

Lauded by audiences and critics in the UK, this is a top-notch period drama with a lavish costumes, setting and enticing characters. It pulled huge numbers and won two Broadcasting Press Guild awards in 2011.

From the pen of award-winning writer Julian Fellowes comes ITV1’s brand new costume drama series, Downton Abbey, starring Maggie Smith as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Hugh Bonneville as Robert, Earl of Grantham and Elizabeth McGovern as Robert’s wife, Cora, Countess of Grantham.Set in an Edwardian country house in 1912, Downton Abbey portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them.

This has much more to offer than being a stuffy, period piece. Get on board early.

  1. my recollection was the first episode lasting a good 65- 70 minutes – how will seven fit this into an hour as advertised..??.they will have to chop it to bits ….

  2. I like the promos for this, but do we really have to have Kesha as the music of choice? Hoping that they’ll repeat it on 7two on a Sunday afternoon.

@Craig – I agree Sundays are way too busy. It also clashes with 7two’s lifestyle line up. And then there’s the second part of The Savoy special which Hugh Bonneville narrates.

@alvar I agree. I’ve given up on 7 and Bones too many changes and showing repeats. It makes it hard to know what season you’re watching.

  3. I was just checking the TV guide about this. Foxtel still has Bones for this timeslot, which I guess could be a mistake, but it looks like we are back to Castle reruns after next week too. This does not make me happy. Any idea why we are not seeing 3×20-3×24 right away?

  4. I have seen numerous promos for this show. It looks very good. it contains intreague, infidelity, romance, back stabbing all sett in early 20th century. The cast looks good as well their is definetly enough here for me to begin to tune in. Hopefully it has the legs, because some shows start of well but by the end of the season they clearly have not fulfilled their potential. which has been the case in recent years. Will give this a go.

  5. and what has happened to Bones? i’m really disappointed that Seven have screwed around with it so much this year. and then programmers wonder why audience numbers are down, there is no reward for viewer loyalty, especially with a show like Bones that pulls strong, consistent numbers. In the future, I’ll be watching Bones elsewhere.

why couldn’t they finish the season and then lead into this?

  6. And what an absolutely stunning programme it is, sad it’s on Seven though, it’s real home is ABC, I’m glad I’ve seen it, trying to see a quality TV series in a regular time slot on a commercial network is next to impossible

  7. Sunday is too busy, this, The Kennedy’s (ABC) and Cloudstreet (Showcase) its too much, not to mention Hawaii 5-0 on TEN and wait whats on Nine now?

This is why like PayTV the FTA networks need to encore their top/new shows on the digital services later in the week. Having Downton Abbey on 7MATE in HD would be fantastic.

  8. I am so excited about this! I wasn’t sure what it was when Seven advertised it, but did some research and asked some friends, and they raved about it! Looking forward to it.

How behind are we from the UK series?

  9. Have been waiting for this show forever, and now they put it on against ‘The Kennedys’ on 2 and ‘Cloudstreet’ on Showtime! Don’t have the facility to record two shows at once, so will record Cloudstreet and watch Downton Abbey. The Kennedys can be recorded at the repeat or watched on iview. But it’s always the same – all or nothing!

  10. Downton Abbey will premiere in South Australia this Sunday at 9pm due to Seven’s AFL commitments earlier in the day. As the Crows-Lions match is a designated “window” game it cannot be shown in Adelaide until 4.15pm (regional SA will have the replay of Pies-Eagles clash at the same time), pushing back Dancing with the Stars to 7pm.

  11. I watched the first two eps of this in an overseas flight a few months back…it’s fantastic! I worry channel 7 isn’t the right place for it though. That said, it’s not usual ITV fare and it did fantastically for them, see what happens..

  12. Finally!

Channel 7 needs to learn that advertising a show as “Coming Soon” for months does Not increase viewer interest in it. Instead, it often leads to viewer frustration, annoyance and mistrust.

  13. Also curious… Castle (aside from snapping back to a season 1repeat again!#?$@) was advertised to be starting at 10pm next week. So either they and merging a couple of eps into an hour and half long double or at least their being honest in dancing will go over with Castle at least…
