Gold Logie 2011: It’s Karl!

Today show co-host Karl Stefanovic has won the 2011 Gold Logie award.

The Gold Logie for 2011 has gone to Today‘s Karl Stefanovic.

Stefanovic defeated Asher Keddie, Adam Hills, Chrissie Swan, Rebecca Gibney, and Jessica Marais.

His win capped off a big night including a Silver Logie as Best Presenter.

“I never expected it (recognition for his work), especially because it came out of all that gloom,” he said.

“There were so many disasters to cover in quick succession that people saw a lot of me, I think.

“It’s amazing. It’s still TV’s night of nights and a lot of people have gone out of their way to vote. My mum has been very busy!”

  1. Karl did not deserve it if you took out every single channel nine vote then he would not have won. He doesn’t deserve it and how does a show with the least amount of ratings for breakfast tv have someone up fora gold logie. Channel nine own tv week and tv week own the logies itisabsolutly rigged!! For sure

  2. Karl may have to give his Gold Logie to Channel 9 so they can melt it down and sell the metal to pay the phone bill. Those 1900 phone calls can be expensive!!!

  3. How much did this cost 9 in advertising. If they had sold the space instead of advertising ‘vote 4 Karl’ they could have pulled in around $14million (source IMTFUIMH 2/5/11) . So now we know the cost of a Golden Logie.

  4. If the Logies weren’t already ridiculous then they certainly are now. I’d like to see Nine’s phone bill for all the votes to Karl.

  5. Surely it cannot be all due to the marketing campaign, as no one is actually watching channel Nine at the moment. Have you seen the ratings? I was at my in laws for Easter and saw a Hugh Jackman ad for Karl and commented on it, and my father-in-law said there were a few others too. He is not in the target to vote, so I doubt the campaigning worked that well. I saw more ads for Asher, Chrissie and Adam. I think the presenters like Chrissie, Karl and Adam were at an advantage being able to have their co-hosts and guests being able to spruik for them during their shows to reach their fanbase.

Congratulations Karl. The reaction here has been most amusing and worth the win.

  6. This was a win for clever marketing not a win for who is most popular in Australia. This Gold Logies win has made the Logies a bigger joke than they already were.

  7. Congratulations Karl and I’m considering watching Today from now. Bin Laden is dead and all networks have switched over to rolling coverage.
    ABC1/24- Al Jazzera
    Nine- ABC America
    Seven/SBS/Ten- CNN.

  8. roaring dave, Logies are are national award and Today rarely beats Sunrise nationally. Its not an honest award when the networks pump money into pushing their people.

  9. I love how the claim “tall poppy syndrome” is pulled out because people are not happy with the winner.

Firstly, claiming that he’s a “tall poppy”. I rather think not. Channel Nine is the Tall Poppy, Stefanovic and his ilk are just the weeds that thrive around the stem, and the one lucky enough to get all of the manure i.e. the voting psuh from the Nin PR department.

Although if you don’t like the winner why didn’t you vote? Because it’s a blatant money making exercise targetted at propping up an ailing media i.e. hard copy magazine. Without the Logie Awards I would sugest the print copy of TV Week would be defunct. Rather put my hard earned towards someone who deserves it.

And for those claming he chased the news. Is it news, or is it just disaster porn? His win validates the type of tripe Breakfast TV trots out. The type of garbage 60 Minutes/ACA/TT dress up and present as infotainment and newstainment.

I think a much better judge of who’s Popular on TV is the Q rating. Because it can’t be bought.

  10. @ Jonno : i’m pretty sure that Today beats Sunrise consistently in Melbourne. Plus Karl has been seen a lot in primetime lately.

  11. And here I was thinking Eddie McGuire was possibly the most hated man on TV. Plus anyone who think David Koch is a better personality than Karl Stefanovic should not own a TV.

  12. The problem is the timing. The Logies presented last night are supposed to be for performances in 2010 and only those who appeared on TV in 2010 are eligible. Karl’s highly impressive work during the 2011 disasters is the reason he has won the Gold Logie, but this is unfair, because he has been awarded for work he has done outside of the eligibility period. Does anyone seriously believe he would have won the Gold if the disasters hadn’t happened and he hadn’t been all over Nine’s brilliant coverages during the voting period? The guy’s talented, but he’s really struck it lucky this year due solely to timing and it’s unlikely he’ll be so lucky next year. Congratulations to him, though.

  13. I don’t mind him when he shows a bit of his personality, but i do think he is close to being the next “Eddie McGuire” of Channel 9, in that he is appearing on a lot of Nine platforms. Wouldn’t be surprised if game show host is next on his resume….

  14. I think Karl definately deserved the nod for his efforts this year, however The Logies have a tough classification period. The “peer voted” catagories are all for the year Jan-Dec 2010, yet the “most popular” catagories are at this current point in time.

That’s where the two Rafters actresses missed out because PTTR isn’t on air at the moment, while people like Asher & Karl got an advantage Asher for her recent appearance as Ida Buttrose and Karl for his terrific, hardworking distaster coverage in recent months.

For all the work Karl’s done to be ahead of the other networks to present us the news for hours and hours a day, hats off to him and he deserves it. I watched the 5:30-6:00am part of Today this morning too before heading to work and Karl seemed a bit drunk, but more with it then last year. Any chance David you cut footage from Karl’s post-Logie’s performance like 2010?

  15. Nine had to Buy the Logies to get this Result…
Not given to the best or most popular , just who works for Nine.

    The awards are tarnished Forever.
