A funny thing happened on the way to the Dalai Lama

Karl Stefanovic's attempted gag with the Dalai Lama has now attracted international attention.

Karl Stefanovic’s attempted gag with the Dalai Lama has now attracted international attention.

Stefanovic’s joke was: “The Dalai Lama walks into a pizza shop … and says ‘Can you make me one with everything?'”

His Holiness was politely perplexed by the attempted humour and looked to an interpreter for help.

The Today show interview has aired on CNN, Fox TV and featured on the New York Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post and Newsday websites.

“Why would you even attempt that?” a perplexed GMA host Robin Roberts asked.

“Why would you even try?”

Roberts’ co-host, George Stephanopoulous, described it as “the perils of live TV” and wondered why Stefanovic, after losing the Dalai Lama in the first telling of the joke, tried a second time.

Another GMA host, Josh Elliott, known for his sense of humour, went to Stefanovic’s defence and declared: “You had to go for it.”

The New York Times headlined its story: “How Not To Tell the Dalai Lama a Joke” while London’s Sun wrote: “So is Stefanovic embarrassed by the gaffe? You’d Buddha believe it.”

  1. Just goes to show, we can create a life-like robot representation of a person, put it on morning TV but Still the humour circuits will fail and embarrass everyone.

OK people! Back to the drawing board! Time start work on The Stefanovic Mk. II. Someone get Jobs or Gates on the phone, maybe they can fix this mess or a rust bucket!

  2. @ Trix

If he’s at one with everything I don’t suppose you could explain how that is meant to be funny? ‘Cos I don’t understand it. The concept yes. But how is it funny???? Or is finding enlightenment in a takeaway shop is just meant to make us laugh. Really?

  3. And now the world knows how stupid Karl is..just goes to show how crap and embarrassing the Logies and Australian tv are that this guy is voted the best.

  4. So if you reach the highest plane of understanding and wisdom, you are “at one” with the universe. One with everything … at one with everything … Jesus H Chr- … that crime of a gag is gonna take Karl several thousand lifetimes to atone for. My bedside lamp’s funnier than him.

  5. So the next time when expats living overseas tell me how second rate Australian TV is, and then as I defend it, they mention that Karl Stefanovic won the Gold Logie –

    What do I say then???

  6. BBC World News showed it too as it was on their time with ABC News 24. I was worried they might cut it off before it fully aired. But someone hopefully saw it at let us see it. Thank you if so. 🙂

  7. I’m sure it’s just my stupidity showing itself, but I don’t get it.

Does it have something to do with the Dalai Lama switching between being a herbivore and an omnivore?

  8. LOL! I actually found this kind of funny (As well as cringing)
But wow that’s a bit embarrassing…Lucky the Dalai Lama is a good sport.

But it ain’t the first time Morning shows tend to embarrass themselves. One reason I don’t watch them anymore.

Now half the world is gonna know about it.
Did this guy really get a gold logie?

  9. Im sorry I dont count myself as stupid but I dont get the joke. Can someone explain please.

The Dalai Lama had no idea what to do or say.

  10. The spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists deserves more respect.

I can’t wait for Karl to say to the Pope, “So, Joe Ratzinger walks into a Nazi youth meeting and ….”

  11. *headsmack*

So this is how Australia will be known internationally for a while. Hope this is forgotten quickly…

(Regardless, I had little to no regard for this twit in the first place… Gold Logie. Seriously. Should have been given to a moldy piece of cheese over this guy.)
