Today breaks Sunrise reign

The Today show beat Sunrise last week, its first true win in seven years.

The Today show beat Sunrise last week, its first weekly win in seven years, not including the Winter Olympics.

Nine’s show with Karl Stefanovic & Lisa Wilkinson averaged 347,000 over Seven’s 343,000 with David Koch and Melissa Doyle (includes weekend editions). In the preceding week, Sunrise won by just 2,000 viewers.

Today won Melbourne and Sydney, where it is regularly the preferred choice. But Sunrise was first in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth -in the west, Seven wins the brekkie battle by a country mile.

The morale boost for Nine follows Karl Stefanovic taking the Gold Logie following a campaign push by Nine, which might ignite some debate about seeing the trophy translate to ratings, and potentially more advertising dollars.

  1. Sunrise is much more enjoyable when Natalie and Mark host it. It’s even better again on the weekends, with the various hosts that brings (but Andrew in particular is most amusing).

I think you’ll find people are just switching off because David Koch makes one want to punch the walls with his ill-informed yet highly opinionated view of life in general. Unfortunately Mel just comes across as a bit of an air-head lately, if she’d be more of a foil she might gain some cred.

  2. @far2busy I complely agree with you about the fake laughter and insincerity of Sunrise, but its not half as bad as the forced and fake laughter and insincerity of Today.

  3. LOL at people who say that one of these shows is so much better than the other. That’s like saying that one turd tastes so much better than another. You’re kidding yourselves – they’re both distasteful.

  4. I personally think the reason Perth sides with 7 is simple history. TVW was the first station in Perth — commercial or not, and they remained far more local than their eastern counterparts for longer due to the cost of networking across the country.

For example, just the other day I picked up a video in an Op Shop, of Fat Cat Storytime, produced by TVW-7 in 1993. However, those days are pretty much gone, 7 still does more community events like Telethon and the RAC Ch7 Pageant, but not much besides news is produced anymore. Sad, really.

So yeah, they were the first, they stayed local-ish, and as others have mentioned, they have Rick and Susannah who have been together for what, 25 years on-air? So people have grown attached to them and just leave it on 7.

I would argue that the fact STW-9 is owned by WIN doesnt help matters much. What incentive is there for Nine Entertainment to include Perth in its programmes when it is not an O&O station, just an affiliate? Just makes Nine feel a bit more distant — especially when Bruce decided to cover up the dotty nine, with a dot-less nine!

    Just my 2-cents.

  5. If you look at the figures its not like people have changed to Today its more like people have just turned off Sunrise and watched nothing in the morning. I still watch Sunrise every morning and every time i try to watch Today there is always idiotic jokes and its just not for me. If you want to watch that sort of thing be my guest but Today is as bad as it was 12 and 24 months ago. Nothing has changed. Karl is still a d***head and i just don’t like Today.

Seven really need to up the stakes. They are winning everything else but breakfast is now slowly slipping. Sure last week was the first time Today has beaten Sunrise in over 6 years but shouldn’t that start ringing alarm bells for Seven?

  6. Wow Today beat Sunrise for the first time in 7 years! big deal it only took them 7 years to do it, I still think Sunrise is way better than Today, at least on Sunrise you don’t have to put up with the cocky Ben Damon or the latest Hollywood gossip every 30 mins with Richard Reid.

  7. @ Hally/Joe, there are many different theories about Perth, many just feel its more to do with the huge support for Channel 7 than a big dislike for 9, though it probably involves a bit of both. 7 runs a very popular annual telethon which gains it big points locally and has had the same two anchors on the news for over 20 years. 9 suffered from a lot of presenter changes in the 90’s and some poor presentation and content in the days that it was owned by Sunraysia. It’s much better now, but it will take a long time for 9 to pull its way back up it seems.

  8. i think perth doesnt care for nine, because of its news service- its awful, that and rick and sue have been doing it for years and are more credible

  9. The departure of Adam Boland has now taken affect. Ever since he left, the show has turned to trashy breakfast tv. It seems this week they are trying to bribe people back with money.

Interesting when you say Today has been more advertised lately, maybe that’s why they have been losing for so long. Every time im in Sydney I see Sunrise and 7News advertisement everywhere but nothing for Today. Channel Nine should start advertising Today everywhere in the CBD. (Bus stops, buses, billboards, even set up the Today Show Cars in the middle of Martin Place and give out freebies). I still think it would be a smart move for Channel9 to set up a live camera in the CBD and live stream it back to the plasma behind Karl and Lisa.

  10. Finally a Ch.9 success story! And a well deserved one at that – Today is so much better than Sunrise. The people on it seem natural and whether you like him or hate him, I think the person you see on TV in Karl Stefanovic is the real him. As opposed to the Sunrise presenters who all seem forced and fake. Can never understand why anyone would embrace a nerdy uptight business expert as a supposedly relaxed breakfast presenter.

  11. I have to agree with Steve’s comment…..Todays numbers have remained fairly steady…..Sunrise has dropped….quite considerably….not sure why….or where viewers are going…?!?

  12. I don’t think it’s the case that people are switching from Sunrise to Today. Perhaps it’s just people getting tired of Sunrise. Today was usually averaging those kind of numbers while Sunrise was usually getting numbers in the 400k.

Maybe Adam Boland did have the magic effect and since he’s not there anymore..

  13. While I understand Seven is a business, the constant plugging of shows on other shows is getting really annoying. From the small bits of Sunrise I watch, all they seem to do is plug either Downton Abbey / DWTS / BH&G / AGT / The Amazing Race. They seem to have forgetten they’re a news program. And other shows like DWTS and BH&G, also used to plug other shows. We see enough commercials for the shows during the ad break and on those annoying in-show popups. Today don’t seem to do it as much and focus on news, maybe the reason for its increased ratings…

  14. I think the Today Show is far superior to those clowns over at 7. Sunrise just seems to forced and unnatural, and they don’t talk to the camera- only laugh among themselves when Kochie says a bad joke.

  15. With Seven dominating in primetime, the halo effect is not carrying over to Sunrise.

This can really only mean that people are increasingly liking Today and less so Sunrise

Sunrise still leads by a wide margin in 25-54 though which is what Nine and Seven both aim to win

  16. Whenever I flick on Sunrise these days it seems to be all about movies, tv show and celebrity gossip so will never watch that. Today is marginally better but not by much. I now watch ABC News Breakfast for serious news and the hosts also have some good banter without going over the top,
