2.47m as Maroons topple Blues

A whopping 2.47m viewers for the State of Origin decider becomes a new Origin record and the biggest single audience on TV this year.

The deciding match between the Maroons and the Blues was watched by a whopping 2.47m viewers last night.

The numbers catapults the event to the top of the ratings board as the biggest single audience on television this year.

The audience in Sydney alone was nearly 1.09m viewers, with another 900,000 in Brisbane. In Melbourne there were 338,000 viewers. It peaked at 2.82m.

The figure is a new State of Origin record, bettering the 2.45m who watched the first match in 2010, and becomes the highest SoO game since the start of OzTAM ratings.

Queensland defeated New South Wales 34 to 24.

But in the other numbers that matter was Nine’s decisive share of 36.9% for the night. TEN followed with 23.2% and Seven was third on 23.0%.

The other big drawcard for Wednesday was MasterChef‘s 1.7m viewers, as Mat Beyer was told to leave the series and Billy Law returned.

Seven News was best for Seven on 1.4m viewers.

The Block also pulled an impressive 1.38m viewers.

Get of your high horse mate. Keep your petty “League” loving thoughts to yourself, I couldnt give a damn how many people like it or not, you also have missed the point. You “League” fans are a precious lot aren’t you? Heaven forbid if I played your little game and stated any other code was better than “League”.

  2. Spot the ignorant southerner! If you guessed @Pete, well done. Yet another dopey Rugby reference to a completely different game called Rugby Union, or just “Rugby” for short, when this thread is about a totally different game called Rugby League, commonly known as “League”.

Rugby League is the most watched football code on Australian television and its State of Origin series is the icing on the cake. Remember Rugby League is the premier football code in NSW, QLD and the ACT, the same places where that Melbourne code is totally ignored by 10 000 000 Australians!

  3. David! talking about Ratings and that this is the Record for the most watched State of Origin Game since OzTAM started! Do you know which State Of Origin Game in the 31 year History has the Record, If you could aswell can you tell me what Any Show has the all time Record?? Cheers Thanks!!! From Scott!

    1. Scott: TV Tonight archive of ratings is pretty good but it doesn’t stretch back 31 years.

We don’t compare pre-2001 with post-2001 television because it used a different measurement.

      But since OzTAM:

      1 Tennis: Aus Open final – Hewitt v Safin 2005 (7) 4.04 million
      2 MasterChef Australia – Winner Announced 2010 (10) 4.03 million
      3 Rugby World Cup final 2003 (7) 4.01 million
      4 MasterChef Australia – Winner Announced 2009 (10) 3.74 m
      5 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony 2006 (9) 3.56m

William and Kate’s wedding ceremony nudged 6.0m but was across 4 networks.

  4. @dAve,

I think your missing the point. I wasn’t have a dig at your precious rugby game (Which I personally find boring- but thats irrelevant). My point was- the lack of depth and quality programming on what once used to be a great Network, and sadly now isnt even a shadow of its former self.

I just express an opinion, sometimes positive, sometimes negative sometimes a mixture of both. I guess it is just tough that it doesn’t fit with yours. I find it amazing that so many people watch a sport that IMO is dull. Its great for NSW & QLD and ch9.

  6. So Nine might win a single week this year based on 1 single Rugby game!!! How pathetically dissapointing is their schedule and programming for this to happen!!!

Network Combined Channel Shares Week Progrssive (Sun-Wed)
    ABC1/2/3/News 24 – 12.7%
    Seven/7Two/7Mate – 29.3%
    Nine/Go!/Gem – 29.4%
    Ten/One/Eleven – 22.4%
    SBS1/2 – 6.2%
