2.47m as Maroons topple Blues

A whopping 2.47m viewers for the State of Origin decider becomes a new Origin record and the biggest single audience on TV this year.

The deciding match between the Maroons and the Blues was watched by a whopping 2.47m viewers last night.

The numbers catapults the event to the top of the ratings board as the biggest single audience on television this year.

The audience in Sydney alone was nearly 1.09m viewers, with another 900,000 in Brisbane. In Melbourne there were 338,000 viewers. It peaked at 2.82m.

The figure is a new State of Origin record, bettering the 2.45m who watched the first match in 2010, and becomes the highest SoO game since the start of OzTAM ratings.

Queensland defeated New South Wales 34 to 24.

But in the other numbers that matter was Nine’s decisive share of 36.9% for the night. TEN followed with 23.2% and Seven was third on 23.0%.

The other big drawcard for Wednesday was MasterChef‘s 1.7m viewers, as Mat Beyer was told to leave the series and Billy Law returned.

Seven News was best for Seven on 1.4m viewers.

The Block also pulled an impressive 1.38m viewers.

Sydney on average tends to be more indifferent than other parts of the country – still impressive number for Sydney TV. Probably has to do with the number of immigrants in Sydney, both domestic and foreign (30% of the population?)

  2. @Adam, I agree totally.
There are a few other serial offenders too, IMO.

And @DeeDeeDragons – that has to be the sorriest statement I’ve seen on this blog in a long time, which is saying something. You should really consider your words a little longer before you submit your comments.

Thats right that channel 10 want the NRL rights, But Channel 9 are not going to let them get it. What i reckon is that Channel 9 will still have the rights for the NRL for a lot of years to come, i dont see any other channel having the NRL. Channel 9 will win the rights no doubt about it!!

  4. Impressive figures… My question is though: How can Sydney pull 1.09m and Brisbane 900,000 – Brisbane’s figure is only 190,000 shy of Sydney’s with such a big population difference?
Or does the “Brisbane” area take in a lot of the surrounding area as well, boosting its population?
    Just curious.

  5. And a great pity that Channel Nein decided to advertise the Rugby Union World Cup during the showcase of Rugby League. For shame Channel Nein. I doubt that the ARU would allow any NRL player to be planted into the World Cup telecast to advertise next seasons’ NRL season.

  6. @tmorgan96 – “On another note, Nine will win the week.”

You were way out with your prediction of them getting 45% for the night. What makes you so certain that you’ll be a little more accurate this time?

  7. What was the figure for the delayed telecast into Adelaide?

Did we really need to have it delayed by an hour of BBT repeats?

What am I complaining about, at least it wasn’t shown at 11pm like the first game.

  8. Im an avid Victorian who loves AFL, and I found last nights game to be incredibly entertaining.. Nothing like seeing NSW getting beaten at anything 🙂

  9. @Jezza well us here in Qld and Nsw think AFL is just a bunch of effeminate men in singlets clawing at a ball and whining when they get tackled. If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say it at all.
NRL is a great game to watch and if people in the southern states gave it a try, they would like it. Same if QLD watched AFL.
On another note, Nine will win the week, and what a fantastic game. Go Qld.
Loved Gould’s comment about the game being a tennis game where the blues forgot their tennis racket.

  10. There is quite a lot at stake, this is week 20 so midyear ratings realeases will be out at the end of the week. Multichannel amendments could be the difference between 7’s ability to claim a clean sweep for the first half or not.

  11. How will those massive figures affect who wins the week? Is Nine now in front? It’ll be close. If Nine win tonight, Seven Friday then it’ll come down to Saturday right? Any idea of progressive totals so far? Cheers

  12. No matter who you support that thrashing was entertaining to say the least. Congratulations to the Maroons on a history making ‘six pack’. Maybe next year to make it interesting there should be an elimation round first between Tassy and NSW with the winner playing Queensland. LOL.

  13. Last night’s episode of Lawrence Leung’s Unbelievable was very good. It was all about magic and if you didn’t see it then check it out on ABC2 tonight or on iView. The show uses one particular magician’s technique to great effect.
