US cable network HBO has dominated the major categories of the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards in a year when network television is overshadowed in the Drama category.
New HBO dramas Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones will compete with Pay TV dramas Dexter, Friday Night Lights and Mad Men for the Drama award. The only network drama series in the category was The Good Wife.
Game of Thrones (pictured) premieres in Australia on Showcase this Sunday night.
But network television ruled the Comedy category with The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family, The Office, Parks And Recreation and 30 Rock.
Amongst the names competing for acting awards in Drama are Steve Buscemi, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Jon Hamm, Julianna Margulies, Kathy Bates and Mariska Hargitay.
Guy Pearce has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie for his performance in Mildred Pierce, which airs in Australia on Showcase next month.
In the Comedy category the names include Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Matt LeBlanc, Steve Carell, Alec Baldwin, Laura Linney, Melissa McCarthy, Edie Falco, Martha Plimpton and Tina Fey.
In the Outstanding Reality-Competition category the nominees include The Amazing Race,
American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance and Top Chef. Although Survivor missed out, host Jeff Probst is nominated elsewhere.
Other nominees include Downton Abbey, the controversial miniseries The Kennedys, The Killing, Justified and even a nod for Jon Cryer from Two and a Half Men.
Jane Lynch hosts the awards on September 18th.

Who even calls Parenthood a soap clearly doesn’t watch it, it’s a prime-time drama.
But I do agree that the show and cast should have been nominated, especially Lauren, Peter and Mae, not to mention Max Burkholder whole plays Max on the show.
When is Parks and Recreation going to be shown here?
Seven has played some previously.
I am so happy that Game of Thrones has been nominated for a few awards. This is the show on TV. Production wise and actors are superb!
No Bob Newhart for his guest role in NCIS? Disappointed in this years noms.
@Anon: Cox is also the only Friends cast member to be never nominated!
@daveinprogress. Thanks for the explanation. Interesting quirk that you can nominate whether you are a lead or supporting actor. Seems weird that Jon Cryer is a supporting actor when his show is Two and a Half Men when he is clearly one of the 2.5 leads.
@deedeedragons id forgotten about Cougar Town, needs to be up for best comedy, best lead for Courtney and supporting for Christa.
Poor Christa doesnt get enough recognition for her hilarity.
No Sons of Anarchy? Disappointed.
Thanks for the Breaking Bad info guys. Elephant stamps for all on a Friday!
Parenthood Is not a soap .
where is community?? And glee on the comedy catagory? P-lease :/
where is community?? And glee on the comedy catagory? P…..lease :/
No Borgias???
Did Courteney Cox kill the Emmy panel’s puppies of something?
I can’t take seriously a rewards ceremony that over-nominates mediocrity (Modern Family – Four male supportings? Four?!) yet completely snubs the best comedy currently going (Community).
And honestly, no Nick Offerman nom? He’s Ron F***ing Swanson, people!
No United States of Tara, No Toni. Would have been nice for the show to go out with some more awards.
@jbar The entire ensemble of Modern Family agreed last year that none of them would be considered leads, but all ‘supports’, and i guess that is still the case. The emmy voters go on the entries put forward by networks and program producers. Also, they have to vote only on the submitted episodes, not an entire season’s worth. Hopefully this year, Ty Burrell and Sofia Vergara or Julie Bowen will win, although i think it would be a great thing for Ed O’Neill to win – considering he was never nommmed for the entire run of Married with Children!
Hope Dexter wins some awards, that series deserves more credit.
How in the world did Glee get nominated for best comedy series for what was an appalling second season???
Why was Community shut out of all categories? What a joke!
Very glad to see Mary McDonnell on their for The Closer! She is fantastic! Good crop this year!
How can All the actors in Modern Family be in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories?
Good to see Spartacus nominated, even if it was for “stunt coordination”.
I was hopeful that John Hannah and Lucy Lawless might be nominated as they both did incredible work in “Gods of the Arena”.
Well done tar , the simpsone (on next page) the office, the big bang theory, moden family and all the other shows that I like but I didnt see because it’s a long list that I don’t have time to read.
Good on Friday Night Lights for finally getting some nominations, also congrads to Melissa McCarthy for her nom, long over due!
I am delighted with some of the inclusions – Ed O’Neill (finally!) and the rest of the adult Modern Family clan; Laura Linney – hopefully she will prevail, but what does Katey Sagal have to do to get nominated? And although it is prime time soap – but so well made – Parenthood’s Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Monica Potter and especially Mae Whitman deserve mentions. Also nice to see Johnny Galecki along side Jim Parsons. Martha Plimpton did really well to score a nod – a great comeback story with her; and always great to see the multi award winners Chloris Leachman and Betty White also nominated today. The Emmy’s are somewhat stuck in the past but also there are evidently voters that appreciate the more cutting edge shows.
Interesting that Waking The Dead was completely snubbed…
